  • As the disclaimer says, this is a reupload (Original Posted May 30th 2016) from my other channel. I don't really want to exist on two channels at the moment, and even though this video is old, I put a lot of work into it and I am (relatively) proud of this. I don't agree with EVERYTHING that I said here in hindsight, and this was obviously made way before the release of Deltarune Chapter 1 or even the Switch version of the game. I figured I'd give this video a second place to die on this channel so that the body of my work can at least be found in one place.
Here is the original video description:
"What is it in particular is it that makes Undertale such a good game? In this long-form (essay-ish) review, I attempt to break down the different elements that make up Undertale, and take a look at what it is it does differently (or even better) than other comparable games."
"This is my first attempt at making a video like this, so please, any criticism is welcomed, I know there are some parts where the pacing, as well as the audio get a little funky, the original file and me had a bit of a disagreement at one point and it made editing the older sections kind of sort of impossible."
"Although I do end up giving this game a 10/10, this review is actually less about what I think personally about the game, and more about what it is that Toby Fox did to create what some people call a masterpiece. This is, instead, an analytical review made to help give people a better understanding of what did to be considered a masterpiece, as well as give you some insight on how it is I rate and review games. The review breaks down the graphics, the writing, the music and the gameplay, the things I consider to be the essential elements that make up (most) videogames, and show you some super neat examples inside of Undertale that use those elements to constantly surprise the players. By the end of the review, hopefully you will see how all four of those elements work together to create one of the most memorable gaming experiences I have ever had, and one I probably won’t ever forget."
"This video took me way to long to make, holy shit." - Sean, 2016
The rest is being removed for brevity.

The first time I ever cried to a game was when the option appeared to comfort Asriel. That moment i burst into tears, and is for me a defining moment of this game.

I've been sort of stumbling for ideas on videos, but when I get around to talking about some of my all time favourite games, there will definitely be a hefty section on their music, as it's probably the largest factor in what makes me enjoy a game.
As for Deltarune though, I played the first chapter when it came out, and I didn't hate it? Not sure why but it hasn't really clicked with me yet, and I haven't got around to playing the second chapter. The music definitely kicks ass though.

@@SwanCC I wasn't hot on the first chapter either but 2 got me fully on board, obsessively so, so you should try and get around to it soon if you haven't yet. Please join me in waiting with baited breath for more.

I would like to offer the alternative interpretation of Asgore's fight only allowing you to die from 1 HP being that it's a reflection of Asgore's own hesitancy to actually kill you. He expresses clear remorse for what he feels he has to do, and is even shown to be suicidal in some of the variations of the ending to his fight. He's caught in a situation where he'll hate himself for it no matter what he does (and he already hates himself for what he's already done), and I think his fight does a great job of conveying that about him.

See, what's great is that it's both. Undertale goes out of it's way to make almost every element of the game part of the game have an in universe reason, right down to being able to die dozens of times and still succeed. The game wants to have the fight even more tense by doing so AND have a reason it would actually happen. Most games settle for one or the other, but not this one.
