  • This video shows how to repair headphones with an in-line break and retain the mic function, but this method works with non mic headphones as well.

I usually tie a couple knots that hold in 2 different directions, then I twist them, then I solder. Makes the solder joint alot stronger... Also, I typically cut the mic a little short and melt hotglue on the end of it, just because I hate pressing down on the controller accidentally, and if it does end up randomly going off, that sucks too.

Well, the plug part on mine that goes into the phone broke, and to listen to my music I have to hold the wire a certain way...any ideas on how to fix that?

You strip these wires and it looks like there's no wire on there , just polyester ..Nothing to solder it seems like.:/

tj webber Sorry, I just saw your comment.
If you are referring to the microphone wire, it is super thin and it's hiding inside the white cover which is hiding inside the copper ground shielding. That is why I wanted to make this video, because it took me ages to finally find that wire and figure out how to recover the microphone function. Before that, I could get the headphones to work but the mic did not.

Hi Planet - PLEASE HELP!!! Firstly, congrats on your video - well done (apart from the low volume). I have four sets of 'bass nic' digital land headphones with mikes that despite being only about $19 in Australia, are the best I've ever used with my bass amp. All of these have had the cables nibbled by my pet rats or rabbits, so usually only one side works. Each cable (two joined together) has a white one and a copper wire on one side and a reddish one and another copper on the other - no green (!). It looks like you have connected ALL the main wires up on yours so I'm a bit confused - I thought you needed to keep these separate? Grateful for any advice. Many thanks.

Ian Redfern Thanks, I'm glad you found the video helpful.
It sounds like your headphone repair may be more simple than the one in this video. I bet you just have to reconnect the broken main wire on the side that is not working. The copper wire on each side is the ground and will have to be reconnected if it is also broken. With these headphone fixes, often they will not work by just twisting the bare wires back together, sometimes they only work with the connections soldered.
The wires I soldered all together in the video was only the grounds, and I did it out of necessity because of the way those headphones are constructed. However, it sounds like you won't have to deal with all the extra details you see in this video.
Give the repair a shot. With them already broken you don't have anything to lose and you will probably find it's easy and totally worth it. And tell those rats to go chew on someone's car wiring and leave your headphones alone 🙂

Thanks greatly for the prompt reply! I just tried wiring the core wires together and trying one pair, but it hasn't worked yet...(sigh). I'll try again tonight as I don't have a soldering iron with me now. Maybe - despite my wire cleaning - there's still a bit of residue on them. I also just asked a uni student about twisting all core wires together and he said "Yes - it should work..".

By the way, the rats have gone - I was just looking after them. It's just one rabbit, and I'm keeping all unprotected cables either above floor level, or they've been covered with cable loom...

I'm stumped. I've carefully separated the wires of two sets of headphones, cleaned these with methylated spirits and soldered them, but one pair has no sound, and I can't tape the wires of the other ones up without the sound cutting out. This second pair is working, but I've had to double the cable over and tape it with the wires exposed. Any ideas? Thanks.

Ian, I'm really sorry I didn't see your second question until ages later, I wasn't notified you commented. Did you ever figure out what wasn't working?

Does this apply with the Bluetooth headphones

    • @climbtheplanet

Honestly, I don't know. Since I posted this video Skullcandy discontinued those headphones, I think in part because the headphone jack is so fragile. I loved them and went through and repaired probably 8 pairs ( I bought a bunch on clearance) but since I have also moved to a bluetooth set to avoid constantly breaking them. My set are still running strong so I haven't needed to open them up. I would guess the wiring is similar and if I could not get them warrantied I would personally assume the wiring is similar and dive into opening them up. But if they are skullcandy or similar and have a warranty that will even just give you 50%, I would use that, especially with bluetooth because a new set means a new battery.

climbtheplanet I have a Bluetooth version and I wanted to open up the hard peace to figure out what's the problem but I don't even have warranty to get it replaced. I'm trying to figure out how can I repair my own. My right side when it is around my neck is going out. And I kind of solved the problem, I just put black wire tape to keep it together so I can have both of them equal. But if you ever do get a chance to figure out how to fix a Bluetooth version, you should make a video on how to fix them. Thanks for the feed back. Appreciate it much bro.

does the warranty work with ones bought from another store and does it have to be in the box?

    • @climbtheplanet
      @climbtheplanet  7 ปีที่แล้ว

kelpythekelp 1 I have sent a bunch back for warranty and have found Skullcandy will give you full retail price credit regardless of where you bought them and what price you paid, as long as you have a receipt. I've used email printoffs of PayPal receipts and it worked fine. I have always had the original box, but I bet they won't make you have it. Their turnaround time to give me store credit has always been very fast as well.
Your experience may end up differently than mine, but I've had great success with warranty claims for at least six pairs of headphones.

xXcooldude117Xx I hope the video helped you fix some headphones. However, I can't fathom why you are criticizing my correct pronunciation of the word solder, which indeed is spelled with an L that is silent:
      sol·der
      ˈsädər/
