  • Does your 2014-2018 Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Suburban, or Tahoe radiator fan keep running? Here are the symptoms: Fans keep running, air conditioner stops working, temperature gauge stops working or reads 160 degrees. The fix for me was NOT the temperature sensor, it was actually the thermostat. This video explains what may be the cause of the issue. Good luck!

      I was about to ask for an update. Glad you’re ok but kinda bunmed because I have the same issue. I changed the sensor and had identical results. Gave up and took it to the dealer. Said I had a crack in my radiator. Swapped. Paid a lot. Then it happened about a yr or so later. (Now) But the exact same issue. Temp gauge drops. Tops out at 180. Few times it went to 210. If I’m driving and see the temp stay at 180 I think “it’s about to happen again.” Then as I’m driving I see the temp gauge at 160 and sure enough, fans are on and they stay on after I turn off the truck. If I disconnect the battery and reconnect, they’ll stay off for a week or so. I notice it happens when I go on long trips on the highway. Constant fear of it happening because I know I’ll have to disconnect the battery again. I’ll try the thermostat this time. Sorry for the long comment 😅

    This worked perfectly for my 2015 Yukon with 111k miles. I had replaced the temp sensor 6 months prior and it stopped the fan issue, but it had recently come back once the weather got cold. I would recommend replacing both the temp sensor and the thermostat while you are in... biggest issue I had was finding my 10mm socket. I am NOT mechanically inclined... anyone can do this if you follow these steps. Thanks for posting.

    Good morning Ed. So if the temp gauge reads below 210, it’s the thermostat issue. If the temp gauge doesn’t read at all. Stuck at 160 (all the way left) it’s a temp sensor issue? Sometimes my temp gauge works and sometimes it doesn’t and check engine light comes on. When it works it’s good at 210. When it doesn’t it’s stuck at 160 all the way left. What u think? Thank you.

    • @MyClutteredGarage
      @MyClutteredGarage  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good morning. That’s a tough call. If the gauge reads 210 when it’s working, it sounds like the thermostat is ok? My gut tells me that these thermostats are a weak point on these trucks. So the thermostat could be sticking open when you don’t realize it and sending it into fault mode. Hit or miss, but I still bet it’s the thermostat. Start with either one, or just change both. Thank you and good luck!

    Thumbs up for the video. My 2014 Silverado did all of this yesterday and I bought a thermostat and coolant temperature sensor. $67 for the thermostat and $17 for the temperature sensor at Auto Zone. Took about an hour to fix it this morning with the majority of the time wrestling with the hose clamps. Temperature is at 210F and all is well. Don't know which part was the culprit, but for the price of them it made sense to just replace each one while I was right there.

    Hopefully this fixes my issue. Prior to replacing the sensor I just pulled the negative terminal and it reset the system and was fine when I restarted the truck. But more than likely would go out again soon if I didn’t. Easy fix. Released pressure from the radiator cap prior so when I pulled the sensor it was a small spit of fluid 5 percent of what came out in the video.

    I skipped the sensor replacement and went straight for the thermostat since I wasn't getting warning lights, only excessive fan speeds.

    Why didn't you reinstall the old temperature sensor to see if it was still good? Also, using a cheap reader can be a big part of the problem, as I took mine to a auto parts store and theirs read a sensor issue,. But when I went to the dealership, their more sophisticated computer said it was the thermostat, not the sensor.

    If you replace that sensor by the thermostat make sure you unhook your battery after you replace it. That’s all I did. Thermostat was still good fans didn’t come on truck hasn’t overheated and is running at the right temperature. Thought I’d put this on there, so someone doesn’t buy a thermostat that they don’t need. If my truck overheats, I’ll let you know on here. So far no overheating, and running at right temperature. Plus when you unhook the positive cable it would clear the codes do you have in your computer.

    Thanks for the informative video! I had the "demonic possesed fan" problem in a 2017. Scan tool showed the coolant temp rarely getting over 140F. I replaced both the TStat and sensor at the same time, about a 15 minute job. After, I realized my truck had been running cooler and cooler for a while and my mileage was dropping! 😉 I always had good heat, so I attributed it to winter weather and mostly short trips. I'm pretty sure the real problem was the TStat, but the sensor was cheap and easy enough to replace while I was there. Now the temp gauge reaches straight up and down and the fuel mileage has improved.

    I had already replaced the temp sensor, no luck. Watched this excellent video, went and bought the thermostat. But I decided to scan for codes(I did not have a check engine light), cleared the P0128 (Error code P0128 indicates that your engine coolant temperature is below the thermostat regulating temperature. This means that your Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has recognized that your engine is running cooler than it's supposed to). After clearing the code, started the truck and went for a ride- no fans and temp started rising up normally. I may still replace the t-stat, truck has 117K so a new tstat couldn't hurt. But before you replace either of these parts, clear your codes...you might save yourself a little time and money.
    This all started after we replaced the radiator and power flushed the cooling system. I wasn't having any issues other than a very minor radiator leak. When I got my truck back I noticed the temp wouldn't climb and the fans were roaring on high- cleared the codes as mentioned above and fans stop coming on, temp rose to 210...back to normal.

    Thanks for your input. Counting cleanup and putting my tools away was just under an hour. I didn’t have to clear any codes because nothing popped up. The only indication was the temperature flatlined and the fan continued to run after the engine was turned off for about 5 minutes. Thanks again!

    Thank you so much! My 2014 Sierra was doing the exact same thing with the radiator fan running full blast even after I shut the engine off and my temp gauge would only get up to 185 degrees. I went ahead and replaced both the temperature sensor and thermostat and now it runs great and back to normal 210 degrees on the temp gauge. I’ll have to agree with the other 2 comments I read that you saved me $500 at Christmas time. Thanks again.

    Mine literaly just got stuck on for the first time about an hour ago after i.pulled into the driveway. My temp gauge was at 160, and fan was running wide open. I live in southern ky, and its pretty chilly outside. I have a 2016 chevy 1500 model. Glad i found this video. Also my temp gauge rarely ever gets up to 210. Its usually around 180, so tomorrow im replacing the thermostat.

    Thank you for posting this! I have had the EXACT same symptoms over the last few weeks and today I heard my cooling fans kick in at full blast when I stopped at the traffic light. When I got home my fans stayed on for a very long time and my upper radiator hose was ICE cold with no pressure.

  • @johnrichards4358
    @johnrichards4358 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I can confirm this. My fans stayed on the other day... I changed the thermostat first. It worked. "Pro tips"... Disconnect the battery. The computer won't reset and the fans will still run if you don't. (Ask me how I know). The bungee isn't really necessary...it's only for 1 bolt. You'll need extra antifreeze. I spilled about 2 or 3 qts. Don't over-torque the bolts. (A bit more than snug is good), or the housing will crack. Either do this on dirt, or have a hose handy to rinse everything off when your done. Especially if you have a dog. (Antifreeze and dogs can be deadly).

    Perfect video to explain and show repair. Seems best to replace both because of location and they work together. Seems if the gauge stays at 160 it would be a sensor issue, mine doesnt even do the gauge scan at start up.

    • @MyClutteredGarage
      @MyClutteredGarage  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting about the gauge scan. Did you read the codes?

    •  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MyClutteredGarage no, nothing showing on dash and do not have a reader. I just figured, as with any computer stuff, reset and try again. Sometimes my factory radio needs reset and then its fine for months. I will see if it works over a period of time, if not I will let you know, but ya, all the gauges at start up do a fan scan and settle where current readings are. But when this was happening the temp Guage does not move during start up, so to me its all electrical, not mechanical. Ghosts in the machine

    •  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MyClutteredGarage For a 3 week update. Working perfectly by just the reset. Still does the gauge scan "sweep" at startup as it should for all gauges. One way to see is put a manual temp gauge in for test and see if the thermostat, a manual mechanical feature that does not send a signal to a computer or gauge, only the sensor or wiring or computer or gauge itself would be to blame if the thermostat is opening and closing as it should. If the thermostat is stuck open or closed the gauge should reflect overheating or too cold it the other parts mentioned are working properly. On a Duramax we were reading low oil pressure,the gauge and sent a code. But engine sounded fine.....of course a "mechanic" wanted $2500 to replace the oil pump......I suggested putting on a mechanical oil pressure gauge and viola, we had correct oil pressure, we flashed the computer and it work for awhile.....same issue again......beings its all trial and error anymore beyond mechanical parts when it intermittent,we then replaced sensor......6 months no issue yet. It seems sensors and computers to tell you if the mechanical item is working fail more often than the mechanical item. Fun Fun.

Also, put your old thermostat into boiling water and see if it opens. Just my opinion. Have a great weekend.
