I've been Welling resident for last 3 years and it's nice to learn a bit about local history. I love woodland and parks in the area...and stunning views of both London and Kent from Shooters Hill. Kudos to Mr Collins for compiling all these photos with matching locations.

Grew up in Welling in the 1970s - went to Fosters - had many an ice cream from the Koffi Pot! Spent many an hour in Welling Library and visiting my Nan who worked in Henry and Michael Gees Curtain shop in Bellgrove Road.
Haven’t been back in over 35 years but am happy to remember it as it was.

We moved to Welling, near the Green, in 1967 and moved on in 1986. These images are amazing, thank you so much for sharing them.

    Wonderful! Thanks for this
Grew up East/Wickham late 50’s until 70’s then moved to one of the white Houses in Wickham Lane before the Plumstead bus garage. Then moved up to Bedonwell so knew the area up until mid 90’s.
Have put some memories of Welling on Francis Frith web site. It was lovely then. When a child got to know shopkeepers. Nothing is the same now!
However Welling was never known for clothes shopping. One had to go to Bexleyheath, Woolwich ( for all the departmental shops) or C&A in Lewisham

I was born on Oakhampton Crescent in 1961. We used to play football in the street. I´ve got very fond memories of Welling. I went to Berwick and Elsa Rd. Secondary School. Mr Hislop was our Regimental Sgt. Major (Head Teacher). I heard he died of a heart attack. what a shame. I live in Germany now but will never forget my up bringing in what was then a really nice area.

Really enjoyed this video . I was born in the Shooters Hill Hospital in 1950 and lived at No.2 Lewis road . Lewis' garage was on the corner and oposite was the Trolley bus depot . When we got the bus home my nan used to say to the clippie "Guy Earl of Warwick please " . I just thouhgt that London bus stops had these elaborate names . Never knew about the pub nearby . Went to Hook lane Infants then Juniors . Moved to a bigger house in Faraday road in 1957 then left for Brisrol in 1958 . My dad was a keen model yacht sailor in the DMYC Danson model yacht club. I can remember the model steam trains that ran around the lake . the locos were about 2ft tall and 12 ft long with carriages you could sit astride. Happy days !!

I also lived in Welling from 1948 through 1963 - "Brookside" 85 Danson Lane - the house on the corner of the park. After spending 44 years in Australia and the last eleven in the US, I have never come to grips with leaving my beloved childhood district and actually wrote about
it in great detail in an autobiography published some years ago called "Cool Among The Flames."

      @Isleofskye 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's really interesting Noel. I live just 50 yards on the cheaper side of Danson Park !
The average price of a London property is now around 600,000 so heaven only knows what those detached properties are worth ! Most people in the area " emigrated" from South London after mass immigration changed the whole of Inner London in the 1970's-onwards.Only 1-in-10 Inner London births were to White indigenous Brits last year and most White Londoners are 55+ years old.
With the incredible price of property in Inner London like 800,000/1 Million for an EAST Dulwich residence many people have cashed in and now Welling, which was 99% White when I moved there in 1983 is now VERY multi-cultural. I will always live next to this beautiful park which has hardly changed and with 192 acres on my doorstep and easy access to the greatest city in the world for its stimulation and vibrancy I love it and STILL do not have a lock on my back door ! Easy to get to the M25 motorway which surrounds London and near The beautiful Kent Countryside I have had 34 trouble-free years here but , like you, I desperately miss MY hometown which was in Walworth/Elephant and Castle in the heart of S-E-London just off The Old Kent Road but I could never move back as I would look like a stranger in what was my Home City.
Why did you move ? Was it the 10 pounds assisted packages Noel ?

I used to live in Camborne Road (1943-1948) and I really enjoyed your compilation. Thank you!
I am trying to track down the date and details of a V 1 which demolished a cake or baker's shop in Central Avenue, between Station Approach and Bellegrove Road, Welling in 1944. I was there, aged 3, in my pushchair, and remember clearly the damaged dome of the cinema, the wrecked shop building, and a felled signal on the embankment. Two dead men were lying under black cloths on the pavement, and a boy, his arm open from the wrist to the elbow and pouring blood, was sitting crying in a smashed shop window. My grandmother, in the shop, was uninjured.
Does anyone remember anything about this, please?

Interesting that. My grandmother lived the war years in Olyffe Avenue, where 2 houses were flattened, but never, ever mentioned
a V1 hitting Wickham lane where you say. Only half a mile away up Burnell Avenue. There is a register and map of EVERY bomb that hit the area, which I’ve seen, and the Olyffe bombs were marked. Try googling South East England Ww2 Bomb register or something similar.

I was Welling Grenadier in the early 1960' s , we would get fresh cooked saveloys from the butchers just up the road from the cinema. A big treat was the Wimpey just across he road.

Yes many will argue the case against Welling being London and yes it is controlled/managed by the 'London borough of Bexley' and has been since 1965. However, Before that it was most defiantly Kent and many from Welling will still claim it is Kent, they all still have a Kent postal address. The Video shows how it has changed from a long time before 'London' took it over and therefore has Kent in the title.

+Jacob Salter (Spursboy) The debate still rages on eh? Lol, well in the early 1960's you would have been absolutely and unarguably right but in 1965 when Greater London was officially established and where it covered was set in stone so to speak, it resulted in a rather shrunken London, it caused a lot of confusion that still goes on to this day, there was also some messing around with post codes around that same time so that parts of North London became 'East London' which made even less sense, personally speaking I would say it's London too but if you worked for a company where you had to send correspondences to people living in Welling and you put London instead of Kent you might find yourself getting pulled up by your boss like I did in a company I used to work for Lol, cheers :)

    • @bobobo4878

Welling is in both Kent and London but is more accurately in Kent. The 1965 and later changes simply changed responsibility for local government: nothing to do with changing the boundaries of Kent. Whatever next? Is Chatham not in Kent because KCC doesn't handles its local government any more? There's a lot of confusion around about counties all over England. Thanks for a fantastic video by the way.
