    I’m brand new at bag making. I’m happy to find a tutorial that isn’t using an industrial machine. I have a straight stitch Janome HD9, that I’ve used for piecing but never put it to a real test. What type of thread are you using? I see it’s Tex 45, but is it nylon or polyester? The heaviest thread I have is probably 40wt Aurifil.

    • @mgrahamsews
      @mgrahamsews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do own an industrial but, I refuse to use it for my tutorials because I feel the machine I use looks similar ish to what others will have. This way my tutorials are domestic machine friendly, especially because I try to use mostly quilting cotton for them and when I don't, I give tips and tricks for it. I want my tutorials to reach all people, no matter what machine they have. Anything can be sewn on an industrial, but not a domestic. 😊
      To answer your question about thread, it varies depending on the fabrics I'm using. I use whatever threads (could be Tex, Gutterman, Aurifil, etc) I have that match. For this tutorial, it was polyester bonded thread. I always provide links in the description of the video, to where you can find the supplies I use. This way, if a person likes what I've used, they can purchase it. If they are affiliated links, I will always say, otherwise, I'm not affiliated or receiving anything from these businesses. Everything I use, was paid for out of my own money and I don't make any money or receive anything for filming these tutorials. They're all done for free.

    I'm glad I found you! What a comprehensive tutorial! I was humming and hawing between this bag and the Joey (because it had a zipper). But after seeing your tutorial, I decided to buy this bag pattern. I plan on buying the same exterior fabric because I think it is so beautiful. I love the tips you add and going over difficult parts to ensure we understand it all. I made sure to subscribe. Cheers from Canada.
    Edit to add: One thing I am a bit confused about is thread size. I know some use Tex 45 and some use higher. When I made my first bag (I only have a domestic machine), I was advised to use Tex 70. So that's what I've been using for even sewing grocery tote bags. But is that going overboard and Tex 45 is plenty strong? If you have a video about this, please let me know and I will watch it.

    • @mgrahamsews
      @mgrahamsews  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you very much!❤️ It makes me so happy to know that my tutorial helped you decide to purchase this pattern. I hope you'll share your finished bag on social media! 😃
      For thread on a domestic, I would use Tex 45 or Tex 35. Tex 70 is for industrial machines, and some domestic machines have a hard time with this thread.

    • @bccabernet
      @bccabernet 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mgrahamsews Oh wonderful! I bought Coats Upholstery thread (which is Tex 70) and I wondered if the Tex 45 would be strong enough. My domestic machine (Husqvarna Optima 630) doesn't seem to struggle with Tex 70, but next time I buy thread, I will buy Tex 45. Thank you for your help!

    Just to make sure I use the main panel print out to do my measuring to make a pattern piece. I'm not actually cutting into the main panels directly and shortening it, right?

    • @mgrahamsews
      @mgrahamsews  ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. You're not cutting your pattern piece, just folding it, as in the hack instructions, to get the new pieces you need for the Lining pieces. Then cut your fabrics as instructed. 😊

    Thanks so much for this great tutorial!. I HAVE to have a zipper top! Just out of curiosity, what is the advantage of having the long tail on the zipper?

    • @mgrahamsews
      @mgrahamsews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The advantage is so you can open the bag wide. However, if you don't like long zipper tails, you can cut it shorter. :)

    I'm Stuck!! Your video has you attaching the zipper to the lining top first, then the lining bottom. But your hack pdf shows you attaching zipper to lining bottom first?? Which way is best?? Does it matter??

    • @mgrahamsews
      @mgrahamsews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It honestly doesn't matter which you do first, as long as you use the accurate seam allowance, that is the most important thing. Sometimes I sew the zipper to the top first and sometimes to the bottom, clearly my brain was thinking, let's just confuse everyone. Sorry about that. 🤦🏼‍♀️

    • @lisawarnke1641
      @lisawarnke1641 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lisawarnke1641 awww, you're very sweet, thank you! ❤️ I love filming tutorials. They take a lot from me physically and are very hard on my body (would you believe some take me days to film and I still get extremely nervous filming?), but it's worth it to help others, especially new sewists. I remember what it was like when I started and the questions I had, but was a bit too scared to ask. So I keep that in mind when filming. I film all of KMGhandmade and DEJA Designs tutorials for their patterns. Then I film for other designers too, so you'll definitely see more. Hopefully one day I'll be able to get better equipment, so my videos can be better quality for you all. I don't want to invest too much money into something I do for free and what I have now is working, but when I can, I buy things to help make them better. 😃
