- Action from the Grand Prix of Europe Meeting at Brands Hatch 1983 (Plus a little footage of the test days)
Featuring all the top cars and Drivers of the time including Nigel Mansell Lotus94T Nelson Piquet Brabham BT2B Alain Prost Renault RE40 Dereck Warwick, Andrea De Cesaris, Riccardo Patrese, Eddie Cheever, Manfred Winklehock, Rene Arnoux, Patrick Tambay, Michelle Alboreto, Danny Sullivan. A battle between the 'Turbo' Cars and the 'Normally Aspirated' cars which the turbo's ultimately won.The turbo era really began here producing some of the most powerful F1 cars ever.
I was there. The cosworths were so loud compared to the turbo cars. Hurt my ears when they passed by.
Almost walked straight into Murray Walker, James Hunt and Niki Lauda all together walking towards me. Outside the paddock, all three just walking through the crowd nobody bothering them. I was awestruck by that.
blimey this take me back to my first ever Grand Prix as a 17 year old (I live about 20 mins from Brands) . I still think how lucky I was to see GP racing through what I consider to be it's golden years 👍
I was there Barry, man I just think this video is amazing !
Pretty special stuff mate, it brings so many memories back to me.
I was a young man back then and thought that one day I would drive in F1. LOL!!
A magical sound!! Really, many thanks for this mate.
It doesn’t really get better than this Barry, it’s like being there! Amazing.
Barry, this footage captures perfectly the raw, explosive power of the turbocharged engines of the time. Heard through a Bose system, the audio is intoxicating.
Cheers Aaron, the Turbo cars were just 'Awesome' pure power. The were very quick and spectacular to watch......regards Barry
This was late September and still red hot if memory serves.Nelson’s race winning Brabham is beautiful ❤
The aspirated cars sound so much better...this is thew last year they were competitive, but despite the crazy HP of the turbos I always thought they sounded bad, 1989 was so awesome when they made a full comeback.
This is the drivers list in order of appearance.
1) Elio De Angelis (Lotus Renault),
2) Michele Alboreto (Tyrrell Ford Cosworth),
3) Nelson Piquet (Brabham BMW),
4) Alboreto again,
5) Eddie Cheever on number 15 Prost's car maybe his spare car (Renault),
6) Piquet and Alboreto,
7) This is a hard one. Completely white car. I strongly suspect judging by the helmet that this is Marc Surer with his Arrows Ford Cosworth without any ads painted.
8) Patrick Tambay (Ferrari),
9) Piquet again,
10) Tambay,
11) Alboreto,
12) This is a tricky one. At a first sight it seems to be the Williams Ford Cosworth numer 2 of Jacques Laffite. But judging by the helmet it doesn't seem to be the regular complete black helmet of the frenchman. And considering that this is Jonathan Palmer's debut race (there were 3 Williams on this race) I suspect this is Palmer driving Lafitte's spare car for this session. This is probably Thursday or Friday morning session.
13) Jean-Pierre Jarier (Ligier Ford Cosworth),
14) Alain Prost (Renault),
15) Cheever (seems he was on the same car Prost was driving before and it is the car number 15 maybe Prost's spare car and this is also the car number 15 on the appearance believe it or not !),
16) White car. Impossible to say. Followed by Alboreto.
17) Tambay,
18) Jarier,
19) Keke Rosberg (Williams Ford Cosworth) followed by Prost,
20) Cheever again using Prost's spare car I suspect. Amazingly you can see the red number 15 but when the car is taking the corner you can see on the other side of the car the blue number 16 !! So that Renault had two different numbers on it !!! This is on 2:40 of this footage.

I liked that white car
I'm a geezer Yank who saw Rindt win his first GP at Watkins Glen 5 October 1969. (Took a nice pic of Tex Hopkins mid-leap dropping the chequered flag.) How I'd have loved seeing F1 at Brands. Circulating alone, somewhat "casually" as here, the engines' brute power really comes through; the cars are more visceral, uninsulated by the race's procession. Also helps that you're right beside the track! Great footage.
Barry this is going to be a very big TH-cam hit my friend! I've put some old vids on here a few months back which my dad recorded and they are getting lots of hits. This era is gold dust!
I make you right Niki....its was a 'Golden Era' of Formula 1 and I am glad I was able to watch and video some of it.....some Awesome cars and for me some of the best F1 drivers around to drive them...........Men's cars driven By Men!.....I loved it and its nice to share it too........Regards Barry
Fantastic footage Barry. I watched the race from Paddock with my Dad (£12.50 entry!). Brought back lovely memories.
Brands - the true home of the British GP. Superb footage! Thanks for posting.
marsvltor2 Thank you marvltor2.........be great to see a Britsh Grand Prix at Brands again...........it was a great track for F1 Cars.
I was there that weekend, an 8yo, my first and only Grand Prix. I still have the entry ticket : £3. I remember there was a saloon-car race for members of parliament (...), and the GP drivers did a parade lap in vintage cars. I would've been within spitting distance of you on the Saturday during qualifying, watching from track side as the cars took Paddock and then up past us to the entry for Druids.
This was before I was even born; thanks for posting. Wish i was there to hear and feel it. These cars seemed to have more character and soul based on sound and behavior
Feels like an actual race... not some corporate bore fest that F1 is now... also no 16 year olds racing.
Couldn't agree more!
RESPECTFULLY, I LOVE YOU FOR THIS. PLEASE MORE, RESPECTIVELY. REAL F1
I still have plenty of F1 footage to post from the 'Turbo' era I will upload it as I transfer the footage from my Betamax Tapes............Regards Barry
THANK YOU SIR
Those were the days!!!
Thanks for sharing all your fantastic f1 footage. Really love watching these.😎
Cool Les Paul....glad you like some of the old stuff..........cheers Barry
+Barry Price thanks I'm all about old School tones😎
Brabham BMW BT52 Turbo and Nelson Piquet, best duet in F1 history!
Mágico mesmo, apesar que Senna com a MP4/4 foi o mais dominante da história, só não dominou totalmente, porque tinha um tal de Allan Prost de companheiro !
Great footage, especially in the garage area. Where you see teams fix the cars and drivers walking around. It's unbelievable how close to the action you got to see.
That`s the Sound, I miss so much !!!
Thanks Thomas.......great sounds of the Cosworth, and Turbo cars........glad you enjoyed the footage.....cheers Barry
Simply stunning! Thank you.
Such a great noise of the raw power of those engines. Also great, but sad to see the drivers that we have lost over the years. Very good camera work as well.
Great footage!!! thank you very much
Michele Alboreto in the green Tyrrell with naturally aspirated Cosworth V8 and Keke Rosberg/Jacques Laffite in the Williams best sound. Also Johansson with the Ligier.
+sargatanas88 Thanks Sargatanas88 yes some great sounds from these 'Classic' F1 cars........regards Barry
Johansson drove a Spirit in 83 he did not drive for Ligier until 88
That's Danny Sullivan in the Tyrell. The Spirit/Honda was there! There's thousands at the track watching too!
sargatanas88 whatever the #33 car is. That’s the best sounding Cosworth out there
Was this the last time the Grand Prix show visited Brands Hatch proper - I remember this as a kid watching with my Dad the Cosworth screams out of clear ways corner I still remember......
Ben green 1986 British Grand Prix was the last at Brands. Track deemed too tight after Lafitte accident.
F1 cars really got gnarly in this era
Beautiful. Pretty handy camera work also.
+PeterPaoPao Thanks Peter........Regards Barry
Another great video Barry....from the real peoples perspective!
Sweet dreams playing at the paddock
Como eram bonitos os carros da F1 !
Queria muito ter visto essas máquinas de perto !
AWESOME... THANKS....
o man this is epic
Thanks XyDtE K........amazing cars and sounds from F1 cars in 1983..........Regards Barry
that Tyrell looks so nimble and around druids i think was the quickest car there. obviously they didn't have the power in the fast sections and maybe with turbo power comes extra weight and slower slow corners
The days when Britain had a real circuit. At least the final Brands race had a British winner...
Great stuff!
+Keegan Thanks Keegan........Regards Barry
Awesome footage Barry!
01:15 the Ferrari 126C3 looks like a scrunched up Ford Ford 1800 with wings. Unusual design by Postletwaite but it took the Constructors that year, so looks aren't everything
Hi Mark, Yes early days of development for the Turbo cars and they all looked very different to each other, Brabham, Renault, Lotus and Ferrari.........the turbo cars needed one thing 'Horspower', a big learning curve for everyone that year..........Regards Barry
"Normally aspirated" to be pedantic. Great vid though!
Where's my downforce? Who took me skirts?
Number 4 Tyrell?
Hi Peter, yes #4 is the Tyrrell driven by American Driver Danny Sullivan........regards Barry
@@BarryPrice1959 yes it is, plenty of Cheever, I do not see Danny. I was @ Zandvoort 1983. Loved seeing Nikki in the TAG Porsche and Eddie in the Renault. Danny crashed out there.
7:13. 🤌
