  • Run in cool conditions under a dark sky, eight Formula One drivers ventured out early Friday morning for the one hour Pre-Qualifying session. Only the top four would advance to the next round of qualifying. The participants were:

    #21 Emanuele Pirro Dallara-Judd GV V10
    #22 J.J. Lehto Dallara-Judd GV V10
    #31 Pedro Chaves Coloni-Ford Cosworth DFR V8
    #32 Bertrand Gachot Jordan-Ford HB V8
    #33 Andrea DeCesaris Jordan-Ford HB V8
    #34 Nicola Larini Lambo-Lamborghini V12
    #35 Eric van de Poele Lambo-Lamborghini V12

During the Pre-Qualifying session, Andrea de Cesaris changed to his spare car near the end of the session due to a problem with his differential. The Modena Lamborghinis suffered from a bad set-up as well as Eric van de Poele having gearbox trouble and a blown engine to contend with. Pedro Chaves was hopelessly off the pace with serious gearbox problems and in the end was more than ten seconds slower than Pirro.

This is great, theres something so magical about early 90s backmarker teams. They had so much personality and passion, with shoe string budgets. The Jordan is one of the most beautiful f1 cars, I always really like the fondmetal. Thank you for uploading this.

Another beautiful upload by Mr. Hurley. How amazing is it to see a Modena Lambo bouncing off the rev limiter in the wild? No one ever bothered to document pre-qualifying back in the day. Keep em coming.

I think these videos have aged like fine wine 😀. I love hearing the Lambo as you said, bouncing off the rev limiter, struggling with the gear selection - it all sounds very raw. I have a lot more videos to go! Thanks again for your comment, always appreciated.

Truly wonderful to see and hear! 1991 is particularly meaningful to me, as it was the first year I attended a Grand Prix at Silverstone as a 13 year old, a month and a half after this video was filmed.
The Jordan 191 is a truly beautiful car and looks nicely planted on track.
The Lamborghini's sound wonderful, but look a handful.
I love how you can see into the cockpits and the driver's hands working the wheel. I can't wait to see your future uploads! 😊👍
I also appreciate your description / details written about the session.

I agree about watching the drivers hands. I love watching how they work the wheel as the accelerate out of the corners. I can tell you’ve got some great memories from Silverstone 😊.

This is really cool to see, I was a huge jordan fan from the mid 90's onwards I'm a little on the young side for anything earlier but its so cool to see this footage from the weekend where they scored their first points 🙂 I've also seen the Lamborghini in the museum in Monaco, its an amazing looking car in the flesh, size zero sidepods before it became a thing. I miss the innovation and ingenuity of this era, now even with a solid entry (Andretti) its almost impossible to get on the grid. Losing the smaller teams was sad for F1, only corporate giants need apply now, where is the next privateer supposed to come from?
