Linklight returns to the workshop for Rivals of Aether which gives you access to custom new characters or mods! In this video I check out MissingNo. the legendary glitch from Pokemon Red and Blue. MissingNo. has a very cool set of animations and even has some corruptions that mess with the graphics of the entire game.

i think the move that spews out “steak” is the coins from meowths head, and some of the alts are references to missingo in the other pokemon games, like the saturated one is missingno from pokemon yellow. such a good character, might be my new favourite
The alt its from pokémon yellow and you can see the 3rd generation missingno in the wavedash

Something I'm surprised you didn't comment on: When MissingNo is involved in a match, you gain a ricidulous amount of gold - I've gotten around 10-15K from a single match. I know most people probably don't care about gold, but it's just so *weird,* and a perfect way to apply MissingNo's infamous item duplication glitch.

payday in pokémon gives you extra money after the battle when you land it, so in rivals it does the same!
There are "achievements" attached to this guy. Also you can obtain more alt costumes depending on what glitches occur. Down b is a tad crazy also. Actually in some rare cases you can glitch yourself into having infinite stocks. But down b has various effects either randomly or based on what direction you press after connecting? Taunt also glitches things. This is just a crazy character that will take a while to find all the things.

9:11 So, that's actually Kefka's laugh, from Final Fantasy 6, not Bowser's. Kefka's laugh is probably more recognised as the laughter used in the Sonic.exe creepypastas, which is no doubt why it's included here.
I really like the way MissingNo. was implemented here. The fact it can spread to the rest of the game really lives up to its origins, and is a fantastic way to tap on the fourth wall of the game, as nothing is safe now.

Fun fact: some of Missingno.'s alt costumes reference other glitch pokemon which usually are more screwed up then Missingno. For example the one at 4:08 is a reference to female symbol and the next costume could be a reference to 4 4 a glitch pokemon which it's front sprite fucks up the game so badly it crashes
don't forget the one at 4:11 is a reference to missingno's appearance in pokemon yellow!

Oh boy does MissingNo. here have so many references crafted into it. I'll try to explain as much as I can think there is here.
-MissingNo. has Water gun, Sky Attack and Payday as it's moveset. (a mix from Pokemon Red/Blue on top of the Yellow moveset)
-The fact MissingNo.'s intro animation sometimes has a black screen is a call back to how the Gameboy struggles to decompile MissingNo's L-shape sprite.
-The reason it can duplicate itself or the opponent? Mirroring the 6th item duplication of course! (That and there being more then one MissingNo. in Red/Blue)
-The reason the menu's bug out? It's like a temporary corrupt to the hall of fame.
-The reason MissingNo. turns into Oak or Giovanni is because of "Glitch trainers" in game that can be found on Cinnabar's coast (depending on your name), or Red and Old Man (since you need him to set up the glitches)
-The reason for the Kekfa Laugh and Happy Mask Salesman laugh referencing "Sonic.EXE" and "Ben Drowned" (Both are haunted technology horror stories and MissingNo.'s both glitchy tech and has 3 forms all which are skeletons and a ghost.)
-The Gaster reference where MissingNo. becomes invisible but still hittable seems to be a shoutout to []'M[] (MissngNo.'s sibling glitch who is not actually a MissingNo.. Which has the properties to turn invisble if you catch it in battle that leaves an invisible 'M (which becomes ditto).
-MissingNo.'s sprites in combat turns either into the opponent, a substitute doll, an egg or ?? or ?????? :
(Pokemon Stadium's memory will show glitchmon's as a substitute doll, EGG (from gen2 or bad egg gen3) and Demimark and ??? from gen4-5)
-One of the deepcuts with MissingNo.'s neutral air is features it turning into a semi-Giygas. (Since Ape Inc developed Earthbound beginnings and Earthbound. Then went to develop Pokemon Red/Green. So the shoutout is a callback to being the same developers between games)
-The reason MissingNo. can turn into a gym statue or a rock (or sometimes borrows the opponents winning screen) is do to MissingNo's Fossil/Ghost forms can borrow the 6th slot of the pokemon you have in the party for a backsprite. (And it's menu sprite pulls out a sprite depending on where you are in the game)
-Unsure but I'll drop this here: The fact MissingNo. can change opponents palettes seems to possibly be a reference to the The_None's MissingNo. from M.U.G.E.N (which that version had grab moves that would corrupt the opponents colors)

Missigno seems like the effects that it can do can be exploited for distractions
I tried this character and its so chaotic, it can even change the palette of a character. I was playing against MissingNo as Kel and then my palete changed to the Kris palette
there was an “arg” for this guy leading up to the release (which also got solved within the hour) in the main rivals workshop server.
first a “DeletedUser” sent a link to a completely blank buddy which only existed to link to a cinnibar island stage.
the preview image for cinnibar island had shovel knight fishing on the right side of the stage, which was a hint for unlocking missingno. winning with the same creators unown character gave a “SEEK THE ELDER” message upon winning.
the solution everyone found was to fish with p1 shovel knight on a pixel-perfect position, have old man as p2, and set a cpu to unown, and even then the chance for missingno to appear was random. if successful, shovel knight will fish up a missingno that crashes the game, with the crashlog having a string of numbers that correspond to missingno’s steam page.
missingno is a marvel that just isn’t being appreciated enough
i will also never be able to describe the feeling of missing the start of the arg and then reading over the entire discussion a few hours later after it was solved

The mod dev going out of his way to cause a modern version of the TMTRAINER effect is mad cool, that's some mad dedication to the craft to carefully break a fairly modern game like that.
Missingno is also based on its appearance in the *king for another day tournament* a tournament event consisting of 32 characters competing to takeover the siivagunner channel for a day

i love this character so much. its one of my most wanted characters for smash tbh and this brings my vision of it to life. im so glad someone made missingno in roa.

10:10 In a hypothetical worl, Goku probably would actually loose to an opponent like this, a character that doesn't fit properly within the confines of reality would probably destroy Goku seriously, but rivals of aether prides itself in making it where a child can beat up Goku, Goku can beat up a character that defys the laws of reality and that being can beat up Patrick's pet snail (rock).

from what i can tell at 0:32, its most likely a gameshark code, though im not sure what it actually means or what it does to the game yet (probably the other way to summon missingno aside from the old man glitch)

Day 8 of awaiting your response Linklight
Ive been trying to make a character in the workshop for a long time, of course me and my low tech team have no idea what we are doing but we’d like it if you’d rate our idea for a character even been working on for a while.
It’s an original character by the name of Happie, with the moveset not having any special gimmicks, (yet)
What you will most likely notice is when the battle starts, the character will fight on their own when the battle box showing the damage (Idk what it’s called) is yellow, and a text saying something along the lines of “I’m in control now” or “I don’t take orders from you.” If you keep mashing buttons, eventually the battle box will go back to it’s original color indicating you’ve gained back control over the character. However, the entire battle is not just a fight with your opponent, but also a fight over controlling Happie. (This is only the beginning)
If “Happie” happens to gain a lethal blow on the opponent that would end the game (if the enemy is controlled by an AI) there is a chance you’ll get a cutscene of a spirit leaving Happie’s body and moving into the AI’s avatar. Here is where the true battle begins.
You now have total control over the real Happie while the entity “Fleak” is now controlling the enemy instead.
Happie will occasionally ask to have control instead of how Fleak would demand it, and by putting your controller down, you can let Happie fight for himself. Here’s the catch though. Happie now has a stamina bar that depletes not from moving, but from using any attack. If this bar is half way full, Happie deals increased damage, if it empty’s, you and Happie cannot move at all. Good thing is that Happie’s moveset is entirely different from his old one, but every attack has been significantly buffed.
As for Fleak, he takes over the opposing character doing higher damage then normal and being extremely hard to launch, but at the cost of having only one stock. His behavior is similar to the higher difficulty AI.
Losing this battle would trigger another cutscene of Fleak saying, “You can’t win anymore, stay out of my way” while breaking the fourth wall and kicking the player out of the game.
Maybe a little too much?
Some little things we are trying to also add in is
- If Happie (Still under Fleak and your control) is defeated, you can hear his normal voice screaming in pain.
- If drastic damage has been taken in the battle against fleak, you will eventually see how Happie is covering his eye that has his button stitched on (if you wanna know why Happie has a button eye I’ll explain that another time)
- Lore runs deep but my low tech/IQ team has no way of publishing any information to share the story, if you have any tips, we will greatly accept any assistance in making this story spread.
- During the battle with Fleak controlling Happie, if you listen closely you can hear the real Happie whispering to himself
- The Fleak battle can only be triggered if there is a single AI enemy and a single player parting in the battle, no more, no less
- During the battle against Fleak, you may notice some of Happie’s moves have an extra effect added in if his stamina meter is half full. (Example: His up special will include projectiles that will bounce off of walls and last a while.
- In the battle against Fleak, the stage will change to a set battle field, where the floor covers the OB area and the stage is round without a fixed camera angle, instead it follows Happie while trying to keep Fleak on camera, defeating people requires literally knocking them into the stratosphere.
- (During the first battle) Up taunt is just Happie staring at the camera, Side taunt is nothing, but Down taunt will force Happie to SD and instantly end the fight by encasing himself in a block of ice. Resulting in him being frozen solid, and neither you nor Fleak can break him out resulting in both Happie and Fleak being stuck there forever. Good ending?
I really hope he sees this soon
Maybe just kick the player past the results screen to the character select screen instead of kicking them from the game
the specials are a reference to the natural moveset that missigno. has if you modify your game to have it in your party (that being water gun, fly, and 2 others i cant remember)

Honestly the best character I’ve ever seen.
Since boss mode on chara & gegachad just makes them pretty cheap, i feel like it's more specificly a raid boss mode or something because with how overpowered they are i feel like boss mode is more made for 3V1, & maybe 2V1 but i don't think boss mode is for a 1V1

This character is very high effort, filled to the brim with great references to its origins and various appearances in media (like Decimark or his sprite from Hypnos Lullaby). Overall, this is a fantastic character and I would totally play them in the future.

so last breath sans with the 3 lives and when he gets knocked off once he goes to the next phase and every phase has somewhat different attacks (or you can choose how that will work)

Yoo up special is sky attack and side b is bubble beam! The 2 moves that missingno spawns with! Also down special referencing it’s duplication powers! This is amazing!

This is the best is just SO ACCURATE MAN
SO from what i can tell, from seeing footage from others on what each attack EXACTLY does
The clone ball, if it hits nothing will clone yourself, if it hits a target it will clone them, and those two count as two different active abilities, meaning to get 3 of yourself you have to hit nothing once, then hit yourself with the second ball to get a third
The grab seems to apply a RANDOM status effect, and also seems to be a higher chance to cause the game to "glitch"
you can hold down tilt to keep spinning, basically make you a spinning top of death, most broken move they have in their kit tbh
Air dodge seems to displace your hurtbox, but not your player standing hitbox, meaning you can dodge attacks, but then attack where you were standing BEFORE the dodge
Parry also uses the little fake dummy (same counter Greninga has in smash) from pokemon too which i found neet
All the effects it has on the game are non-crash related, as they only affect the sprite sheets and audio, the effects to other fighters either change their active skin, or invert the colors, while most of the stage buggyness is just making the transparency of the sprite sheet null, making them all black boxes
if you manage to get 3 clones far enough apart, your attacks will start wrapping around to the other side of where your at (smash attack thrown right wraps around to far left)
All the pokemon visible in their attacks are based of the original pokemon needed to do/seen in the glitches in the games
The laughing taunt is the only real "taunt", the others just change the game/characters in random ways
Side special can do a multitude of things, seems to be partly random, partly based of charge level
The side special (correct me if I am wrong) is a reference to missingno in other games where the only move it knows is a weak water move

For all of missingNo’s smash attacks they are different. Pokémon moves down, smash is bite and up smash is payday and those things he’s throwing are meowth’s coins and forward smash is headbutt
The one where it is mostly just red lines is the missingno sprite in yellow

Fun facts: missingno can jump cancel their down air and it will drop the slam object.
Missingno has a perfect dodge mechanic that will turn them invisible and create a decoy that will move in the opposite direction of their dash
Missingno has 3 different options on their down special: back will set your opponent’s damage meter to a negative integer temporarily or apply a random glitch effect, forward will afflict the opponent with multiple of the stock RoA debuffs or apply a random glitch effect, down will freeze the opponent in an ice block or trigger a random glitch effect, up will respawn missingno and set there damage meter to 0 for one hit.

I just got rivals of aether yesterday and I'm already really good at chara missingno and flower, against level 5 CPUs
I believe the hex code stuff is in reference to the glitches and exploits in gen 1 is by manipulating the code by having certain items/Pokemon in different variables
