It's a 100 percent recommendation, especially for beginners.
Wouldn't eating enough be the secret to making it to the next meal easily? I had a huge meal at 4PM and it's looking like I won't be eating before bed tonight (sometimes I do).
Easiest way to do it is to have an early dinner and then brunch. That way your fasting when you are asleep. I tried to fast through the day but it's too hard for me 🤣🤣
Trying intermittent fastening with higher carb meals can be torture. Having more fats and protein in the meal can make that fasted stretch much more tolerable. Well that's what works for me 😅
The truth is 1 year ago I couldn't fast for 4 hours. In my personal experience getting sore isn't an issue, my recovery has been great. However, a fasted workout does reduce my performance for about 15-5 pounds, depending on workout. The major benefit I've experienced with a fasted workout is that it reduces my appetite and I end up eating less in my post workout meal.
I enjoy a fasted workout in the morning. Maybe a cup of black coffee while I’m driving to the gym But I hate working out with food in my stomach and feeling sluggish. Plus eating before hand usually means I have to cook and take the time to eat. I’ll do that after. It’s not that serious.
What I do is I eat my meal at noon then when I feel my food is digested enough after few hours, I workout. It works for me. If I wait too long I won't have enough energy and I'll need to eat again. And I don't eat dinner.
I weight train fasted and take BCA's during my workout ( Generally 14-15 hours fasted) I have found that I can train harder and longer without fatigue compared to being fed.
Working out fasted especially if you are lean and fit will raise your cortisol levels through the roof, especially if you are doing a keto diet, this is a killing combination, i did keto for 45 days, and i was hospitalised for high cortisol levels and low blood sodium. And my body stayed pumping high amounts of cortisol for more than 3 months
Were you doing weight lifting or cardio? What about caffeine or pre workout? Is there information on this or is this just personal experience and assumption?
I experienced that too and I wasn't even on Keto, just a caloric deficit. The workouts felt amazing(boxing training) your body feels lighter and you're indeed a lot more focused but I started to lose a lot of energy 2 weeks later and my recovery was way too slow. I may had my body sore all day, zero caffeine and still couldn't manage to sleep at night. Took me about 2 weeks more to fix the issue
I have a small protein with a tbl spoon of virgin oil about an hour b4 my resistance training. I find this gives me the energy to complete my workouts.
Working out in a fasted state when you're fat adapted is much easier. No hitting the wall so to speak, and no sudden dips in energy as you're not heavily reliant on carbs to fuel the workout. Also, there's a more logical reason to workout fasted. There's always the risk of throwing up if you have a meal before intense excersise . That's why I always workout fasted 🤷♂️
I found that I can go through a high-intensity work outs if I am fasted. If I have food or a small item to “fuel,” I just find myself not able to perform. So I am more of the Workout Fasted Camp.
This is great information! I love to run in the sun and heat, and I'm always pleased to learn more about why that is. People think I'm nuts, but I had my best run of the summer just recently, on my 15th hour of fasting, in 80°+ heat. I started the run with a little hunger which immediately went away, followed by a sudden, modest burst of energy. When I was a ballet dancer, I was 24/7 hardcore. During the summer, I trained daily in an unairconditioned studio where the temp would hit 85-90°+ easily. I ate a Slimfast and a banana for breakfast and the same for lunch (this was 20yrs ago). Despite the heat and lack of food, I always had a ton of energy, and I felt great! This explains a lot, and I think running in the heat 20yrs later put me back into that familiar, very positive feeling that I enjoyed so much. Huh, it's all making more sense now! :) I also recently had a remarkable chest and shoulders workout in a fasted state. I finished my bench press workout with a drop set. I dropped the weight to 135 and was literally throwing the weight around. I was slamming each rep so hard the plates were bouncing.
If you are already burning fat from being fasted, then working out will just amp that up. If you are fed, you will use the carbs for energy first. I do both. Fasted when burning fat, fed if I want a super heavy workout to build muscle.
I prefer resistance training after having something to eat; however, because of work/family schedule, I only have time to lift early in the AM. I don’t have a lot of time to eat/digest and workout in the AM, so I end up working out fasted whenever it’s early morning workouts
I myself prefer training in a fasted state because I do notice I do have more energy. But I think it's also practical because you look at how crazy the world is getting. Pretty soon you might not even have a choice to go long periods of time without eating. So I would rather try to do it in as an controlled environment as I can.
Been training fasted for over 3 years and I’ve had no issues. I do eat late at night so I wake up with sightly full stomach. The only thing I do intake is a decaffeinated pre work (nootropic). Sometime I eat half a grapefruit. I’ve lost a ton of weight. So don’t know what this new science is.
Today I spent 1 hour swimming. After swimming was a long 2 hours walk during fasted stage. I realized I swim faster and make double laps than the days I eat breakfast before the pool. I walk same length of time as always but was 9 miles instead 8 as normally after eating. I took my bone broth after my training ànd 22 hours fast. Feeling amazing.
That's awesome..I don't do big serious workouts but 3 days a week I go to the gym and walk 4 mph on a treadmill for 30 min, then do weights for 30 min, then jacuzzi 10 min, sauna 10 min, steamroom 5 min. Shower and go home to break my fast. I fast 22 hrs, eat 2 meals from 4pm to 6pm.
that's mostly water initially unless you are not eating at all so don't get discouraged when you start to lose less. to lose 1 pound of fat you need 3500 caloric deficit
I do a 16 hour fast and workout first thing then I eat my protein and fruit after that then have a little mid day snack (eggs) then have my main meal at 7 and I feel amazing 💪
"Working out fasted" means a lot of different things. Some people on keto diets do strength training while fasting (Joel Staley). Then there are non-keto 'if it fits your macros" people who do fasted cardio first thing in the morning before breakfast. To them, fasting is 8-12 hours of not eating overnight. Those are two very different things--longer-term fasting while fat-adapted vs. people who eat lots of carbs on short-term fasts.
Also the mental aspect of earning your first meal is *chefs kiss* .. after 20 minutes in I def get into a zone training very hard, kinda hard to explain .. def recommend everybody to try it and see if their body likes it..
I train fasted something I implement when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes which I should state I reversed with with 9 months of no carbs, fasted 48 to 72 hours during the 9months and loads of intermittent fasting before I started going to the gym 2 months after which I have done on fasting states most times which I have seen a lot of gains as well
I prefer working out fasted and even doing brainwork fasted. That's why I prefer to eat in the early evening when intermittent fasting, so I'm ready to work the next morning and day. I just need something like coffee, tea or fiber supplement in the morning to extinguish any possible hunger pain.
One of the inherent problems with "science-based" whatever is that many consumers believe that just because a "study" was performed, that its "results" are true. Yet one can find studies supporting almost any protocol. The quality of a study is almost never mentioned in vids. Who performed the study? Were conflicts of interest made apparent? How many participants were there? What were the metabolic health of those participants? Could said results be repeated? What were the confounding factors? Would it pass basic statistical analysis sniff tests? Etc. This is a general comment and not necessarily targeted at Thomas or this particular vid. I like Thomas and believe he offers valuable and educational vids. I especially like his appearances with Mark Bell and Nsima. That said, one's own protocols should always be a fusion of "the science" and personal experience. If you kill it working out fasted, then go for it.
For over 40 years I thought it was a crime not to have breakfast before I went to the Gym, now for over almost one year, just a large glass of water before the weights workout, and cardio, no issues, I now prefer not to eat before the Gym.
But Based on the result you're showing Blood Lactate levels were 10000 vs 9000 for Fasting against Non-fasting immediately after exercice, meaning that we produce much more of Lactate during fasting -> getting wiped out faster on fast than non-fast so basically eat if you want to be able to exercice longer before the fatigue quick in.
You say that since while fasted you’ll have less lactate is in the blood and more in the liver, there will be more lactate for Gluconeogenesis, hence less requirement for amino acids and less protein catabolism overall, but if you are fasted you’ll also need much more glucose than if you are fed, so I don’t see why the protein breakdown diminishes necessarily.
It doesn't matter how much harder you are able to workout in a fed state. The calories you ingest that increases your workout output will not be burned up by that extra output, because exercise only accounts for a small fraction of your total caloric expenditure. The only exception to that is if you are doing a prodigious volume of work akin to a professional athlete. As the old saying goes, you can't outrun a bad diet. The only justification for consuming extra calories to facilitate a harder workout is not for the sake of a few extra calories expended, but to allow you to do more volume in resistance training.
Kind of makes sense. I have a small fatty coffee preworkout. Any more and I feel like gash. Any less and I feel weak and sick. When I have carbs post workout, the soreness starts. Arthritis got so bad I've had to go back to keto. Feels so much better!
@@andrewb8173 Just found out I have CFS so my situation makes sense. Switching fuel sources could be fine for those who are metabolically healthy. For those who struggle, it could indicate an underlying issue that needs attention from a doctor. My body doesn't seem to have the energy to switch fuels, use fuel, ect. No diet gonna work for me, but at least I'm not in pain!

I like working out fasted with only a scoop of creatine and water (creatine does not break your fast). Performing well and not hungry during my workouts. This works really well, highly recommend it.
He has a really good video on a preworkout recipe that doesn’t break your fast. Coffee, citrulline, beta alanine, salt, Theanine and a little bit a creatine. Gonna try it for the first time tomorrow
I guess my Mother's family got this "fasted exercise" quiet often in her generation. In the growing season, they horse drawn plowed and maintained cotton and corn which involved some pre-dawn black coffee on an empty stomach, working until 10-11am, then breakfast. They were, like most, very slim wiry built people.
These videos are always great but this video was particularly good. I worked out fasted, I paddled my kayak at 4 miles per hour for four hours. My physical performance is the same for fasted verses non-fasted but my need for water is less while working out fasted. I have no idea what that means.
Kind of a low powered study, didn't look for selection bias, variables pertaining to prior adaptation Only significant finding was 30 minutes afterwards... If you're carb depleted there's a higher metabolic need to turn lactate back into pyruvate... to generate atp/energy
Hi Thomas! Can you do a video for keto endurance runners? I am talking about those of us that train/race for half and full marathons. Often we found ourselves having to use carbs to fuel long runs. Thanks
So then why not get the glucose from food prior to the workout instead of from lactic clearance during it? That way you don’t have to worry about losing muscle from working out fasted…?
Personally I used to train fasted for growth hormone boost to get better gains. However, after some times I could push myself to my max performance, so only time I workout fasted is after 3 day fasting streak to prepare body for meal. Don't know if it's 100% good but didn't find a problem, yet.
Well, one thing for sure, one should wait at least an hour after eating a meal, maybe 1 1/2 hours with heavier protein (meat) to digest and then get into the bloodstream as well before hitting the weights.
I’ve read that some findings suggest that antioxidants blunt the beneficial effects of exercise…why do so many of these pre workouts have 300% or more RDA of vitamin C?
12-16 hr fast you can typically have a normal lift . However after 24 hrs . I recommend cardio only . Or light weight training. And anything after 24 hrs. Cardio only . Heart rate under 120 to keep from burning muscle
Training Fasted doesnt necessary mean to train in the morning, If I train after work only meal I had before is around 6 hrs earlier (lunch time) which is also a fasted state.
I had read before (I apologize I can't remember where), that one can still get these benefits of fasted training, even if not in a truly fasted state. For instance, if a person consumed 100 or so calories in the morning upon waking--like maybe a couple of eggs or something--but then nothing else, that by their noon workout (provided they consumed nothing more in between), they will have effectively "used up" that energy, and even more so during the workout, which would basically signal the liver during the workout that there's an energy deficit and then AMPK would go up. Then a post workout feeding would elicit the same mTOR and insulin spike that we're looking for. All without being in a fasted state for more than 4 or 5 hours (provided the initial intake was very low calorie). Do you think there's any validity to this? It seems a little too simplified yet intriguing.

I also recently had a remarkable chest and shoulders workout in a fasted state.
I just started intermittent fasting so this video was very helpful. Can't wait to try the supplement as well. Thanks for sharing!
I've been losing one pound per day since I started walking 😁 30 minutes a day after fasting 23hrs. I am going to keep doing it as long as it works
I fast 22 hrs, eat 2 meals from 4pm to 6pm.
that's mostly water initially unless you are not eating at all so don't get discouraged when you start to lose less.
to lose 1 pound of fat you need 3500 caloric deficit
the pre workout has Sucralose, coloring, apartaine do you rlly recommend that?
Thank you so much for your videos. They are so educational.
I workout fasted 1hr 30/45 mins (weights & Cardio) and feel great
I do a 16 hour fast and workout first thing then I eat my protein and fruit after that then have a little mid day snack (eggs) then have my main meal at 7 and I feel amazing 💪
Exactly. Nobody in the comments including Thomas specify hours. Just call it fasted which is zero help for any reader.
I’ve been working out (weight lifting) fasted for over 4 years now. No complaints.
Also the mental aspect of earning your first meal is *chefs kiss* .. after 20 minutes in I def get into a zone training very hard, kinda hard to explain .. def recommend everybody to try it and see if their body likes it..
I assumed weight training fed and cardio fasted was best.... thanks for the video...now I have a better understanding
Create the problem, then sell the product. Brilliant!
That explains why I feel much less muscle soreness when I exercise in a fasted state, and the soreness seems to go away much faster than before.
Well Needed
When I was younger, I'd eat before a workout. It worked...for a while. Now that I am wiser, I generally don't eat before any exercise.
For over 40 years I thought it was a crime not to have breakfast before I went to the Gym, now for over almost one year, just a large glass of water before the weights workout, and cardio, no issues, I now prefer not to eat before the Gym.
😂 was notified of this video in the gym parking lot. I watched it before going in. You know jic. thanks Thomas!
Thomas that Melt product has artificial coloring as well as sucrulose though 😵💫
But Based on the result you're showing Blood Lactate levels were 10000 vs 9000 for Fasting against Non-fasting immediately after exercice, meaning that we produce much more of Lactate during fasting -> getting wiped out faster on fast than non-fast so basically eat if you want to be able to exercice longer before the fatigue quick in.
Thomas thanks for all the videos!!! Awesome information. What's youre suggestions on dandelions
After reading the comments I'm going to try both, fasting and no fasting, because I am diabetic. Thank you everyone ☺️
Finally someone who understands the difference between lactate and the hydrogen ion responsable for muscle contraction shutdown!
I primarily work out fasted. Only water and salt. 2-4 hours daily. It feels great. I'll give it a go though.
I started working out in a fasted because of Thomas 7 years a go! So I will keep doing that no matter what 😂
He said “ probably “ not accurate 😂😂 Nailed it!!
Working out fasted feels better for me. I feel like I can exert more effort.
Feels so much better!
ive found if u go back to carbs , inflamation joint pain comes back
@@andrewb8173 Just found out I have CFS so my situation makes sense.
I am very new to the keto lifestyle and still trying to figure out what works best for me. I just ordered the Bowmar sample kit so I can try their products before committing to a full size tub. Thank you for the discount code!
Ordered Melt pre workout per your recommendation. The nutrition facts state 10 calories- are you sure this won’t break intermittent fasting? Thank you 🙏
Excellent show today
Personal thing you have to do both and see how your body responds personally I get a much better pump and workout after fasting.
But I eat high protein after work out straight away.
This guy is genius… We see two commercials to watch the video.
Then, he cites a bunch of science to justify an advertisement for a pre-workout (Melt), then we watch a another commercial in the middle of it all. Money making machine.
Question. Are you saying use the melt for pre workout. Or talking about buying the bowman preworkout?
Seems to me that it is all about been consistent, the body will adapt to both.
0:37 there is another group. Some prefer to train in the morning and it so happens that the workout is within their fasting window, Thomas.
@@sixwaveholddown Sounds like a great boost man! I just might try it out too.
@@i-am-ali1672 yeahhhhh let’s go
It worked really well but it was absolutely disgusting
@@sixwaveholddown Thanks for letting me know bro, if it works I'm okay with the bad taste lol
Fasted workout it is!
These videos are always great but this video was particularly good.
I worked out fasted, I paddled my kayak at 4 miles per hour for four hours.
My physical performance is the same for fasted verses non-fasted but my need for water is less while working out fasted. I have no idea what that means.
Great information!🙂
Kind of a low powered study, didn't look for selection bias, variables pertaining to prior adaptation
Only significant finding was 30 minutes afterwards...
If you're carb depleted there's a higher metabolic need to turn lactate back into pyruvate... to generate atp/energy
Most of the time I’ve done cardio fasted I get side stitches and never when fasting. For extended fasts that goes away as my iron levels go down.
I trained fasted and have seen excellent results. Also, in the Army BCT you wake up at 5 do calisthenics and run up to 1-5 miles completely fasted.
Hi Thomas! Can you do a video for keto endurance runners? I am talking about those of us that train/race for half and full marathons. Often we found ourselves having to use carbs to fuel long runs. Thanks
Look into professor Tim Noakes. He specialises in this field
When you're referring to a "fasted state", a minimum of how many hours without food/calories are we talking about (12, 14, 16, 18, etc.)?
So then why not get the glucose from food prior to the workout instead of from lactic clearance during it? That way you don’t have to worry about losing muscle from working out fasted…?
Thomas Delauer is definitely the least boring fitness channel channel!
I like training fasted and post eaten
Do workout in the morning and evening
I like it, and it connects with my schedule
Looks great the preworkout. Now only if it didn't have artifiicial colouring and sweeteners!!
That pre is missing some stuff.... Needs some Alpha GPC (600+1,200 mg) and citrulline (6-10g), then I actually would consider it.
I’ve read that some findings suggest that antioxidants blunt the beneficial effects of exercise…why do so many of these pre workouts have 300% or more RDA of vitamin C?
For some that eat before & feel sluggish the problem might be that their food hasn't been digested properly due to a lack of stomach acid
12-16 hr fast you can typically have a normal lift . However after 24 hrs . I recommend cardio only . Or light weight training. And anything after 24 hrs. Cardio only . Heart rate under 120 to keep from burning muscle
What about between 16 and 24 hours?
Always do fasted workouts, at first i thought it was diminishing my results, but after a few days it just was like regular fed workouts.
I feel better working out fasted. Is it better, no idea, but I like the feeling mentally and physically of working hungry.
Training Fasted doesnt necessary mean to train in the morning, If I train after work only meal I had before is around 6 hrs earlier (lunch time) which is also a fasted state.
Thanks Thomas, question: do you recommend to take Carnitin during fasting? I thought it shall be taken with food. Thanks
The calorie count on the treadmill is actually the only one that has been shown to be accurate (so long as it lets you put in weight)
I normally have heavy cream, MCT oil with my coffee in the morning. If i eat food before i workout, i feel sluggish.
