    That is an awesome property for you. So many good things already in place. An out-building with electric and water is very useful. A donkey and storage shed already in place. Apple trees! Fencing around the garden is great, even if it needs work. So cool. You don't even need a bulldozer :) It's going to be exciting seeing you bring that old place back to life with the spring. Thank you!

    Sounds good. Ten acres is more than enough. I started with 229 and later added another 60. My favorite thing was my Guernsey cow. I enjoyed milking her and the products she provided including a calf now and then. Always was a Guernsey Calf but a male. We turned him in to Veal when he was about 280 pounds. A gentle cow allows you to maintain a herd of young steers over the winter. The cow is a natural leader. My cow would come when called. You'll make mistakes but there is always a learning curve that goes along with them. I sincerely want to see your family succeed.

    Hey Guys! as a well owner myself the best advice i could give you is set up a well fund and pay into it on a monthly basis. when a issue or problem comes up, hopefully you have the funds to fix and maintain it. get an small emergency holding tank, 300 to 500 hundred gallons will have you sleeping good at night knowing you have back up water. I can't wait to see what you do with this 10 acres! Peace!

      I have tried to figure out how to do this on our farm. But, how do you do it in a place that is Zone 5 (ie, below freezing much of the winter) ?

  • @marylober3005
    @marylober3005 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    When you get a wood stove look at the Amish ones that you can also cook on. In winter then you can get extra use from your woodstove

    I would try to transplant some of those small evergreens instead of just cutting them down. You can fill in other areas where you want privacy. In early spring, before you will be able to work the land you can move those evergreens. They'll be happiest then. You can also place an ad that if someone wants them for free, they can dig them up. One small evergreen at the store is about $60...people will be glad to dig them up for free. You could even sell them to professionals who can put them in their inventory for landscape design projects.

    Plan out your orchard and plant more fruit trees ASAP THIS SPRING. One of our biggest regrets is not putting in our fruit trees sooner! It's great that you have a couple of mature apple trees to start, but you will want/need more. Such are great property!

    I'm so excited for you. Wow! 10 acres of beauty. The property looks amazing with snow cover. I can't wait to see you plant a big beautiful garden. Its now your homestead and i can't wait to see your awesome renovation videos coming. I can picture you selling eggs and veggies to the locals. Looks like you need to invest in a small garden mower tractor and bucket/plow tractor. The trails sound really cool. You have endless possibilities with all those rocks. I can see you cutting down your own Christmas tree from your land next Christmas. You can make wreathes, garland, boxes with pines, evergreens and pine cones. Can't wait to see animals you get for the barn. So much work and not enough time. I'm missing your old property. You did an awesome job rehabbing the trailer. I know the new owner will fix the school house. One day i know we will see a video of that. God Bless your beautiful family in the new Happy New Year. Ron Gaska in coastal Groton/New London, CT.... LET THE PROJECTS BEGIN!!!!!!

    Wife and I are absolutely thrilled for you both and the children. It seems you have everything you desired in this property. Ashley almost radiates with contentment and happiness. I am surprised neitheer of you mentioned the absence of ANY human induced sound in the background. I would like to caution you both that where you are now located that not all of the wildlife is similar to your previous home country. You more than likely will have bear, wolves and coyotes and moose in your region. So bone up on all that for your families safety..

    • @trinam4179
      @trinam4179 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed! I'm in Ohio and we are on a 200+ acre farm. We have deer(tons), rabbits, raccoons, snakes, oppossums, squirrels, turkeys(tons) and for the angrier criters we have Bears, coyotees, wolves, and black panthers. We don't walk or ride anywhere on the property unarmed. We've had way too many scary encounters with above angry critters! Eeek!

    Hey - here’s a fun activity suggestion for Belle: have her hunt for animal tracks in the snow! She could draw them in one of her notebooks and then identify which animal made the track and then draw a picture of it. Maybe even write a little bit about each animal (what they eat, how large their territory is, how many babies they have each year, etc.). Kind of like that cute bird book she made. In the Spring, Summer and Fall she could make a Tree Book of the different types you have on your new property. ‘Here’s what an oak tree looks like in each season and what their acorns look like’. I think she would really like that and do a great job while learning at the same time. She’s a sweet kid (Maverick too).

    Thank you so much for giving us this tour!! We were just saying how much we would love to see the outside of your property! It's such a beautiful place and so quiet and peaceful. So glad it came with the out buildings, the open land and the woods, too. My husband mentioned having the well water tested and in time, you may need to have the septic pumped. (We've had to do both along with having to replace a 600ft. well pump.) Filters are really good for your well water. Protects your water heater and washing machine. We would love to know how you guys found this wonderful place! So happy for you!!

    One extra thought...the heart of the home is the kitchen and living room. Not sure of your budget, but if you could add on to the end of the home to give you more space for the woodstove. Enough advice. You have a more sound "business plan" than folks making 75k a year.

    I don't know if you all are taking suggestions or not...but just incase you are, here is an experienced carpenter and homesteaders suggestion.....I would leave that old coop in place for now. Tear out the insulation, cover the hole in the floor with a piece of plywood, just screw it down over it. (the chicken's won't care) and I would remove the one broken window on the front near the door just so it's safe for your children to be around. Sweep it out and build a small run just off the side where the hole is. I saw some good post in the mule barn you could use for making the chicken run. Then BRING ON THE CHICKEN'S...I live in Arkansas north of Jeff. Would love to come help you all out, I'm not kidden...Just holler.

    Best way to clear that old garden with trees is refence put some pigs in for a year and they will root up the trees. Put dried corn around the roots and the deeper they dig just dump corn down the holes. I know it's not quick but my Granny taught me that in the early 70's and l used it on farms when my kids were growing up. You don't just get clear land but also fertilize plus lots of pork for your freezer. Love and God Bless! Uncle Jeff!

    • @dottiebebris9706
      @dottiebebris9706 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uncle Jeff is right. My backyard when we moved in was rocky and coming up in briar and trees. I built a log cabin style pig pen and when they had cleared that small space, I would rebuild it by moving three walls to enclose another space next to it. Then I would pick out the rocks, rake it smooth, and plant annual and perennial rye grass. Keep it small and they do a great job in very little time, and it's not an overwhelming job. I wish that I had taken pictures of the before because it made such a huge difference in turning it into a lovely lawn and garden area.

    Wait until you see how beautiful Michigan is in the spring. That apple tree will have blossoms around the second week of May that smell beautiful! Now depending on how far north you are, around the time that the apple blossoms come out, look around the base of the tree for morals! They are a Michigan delicacy! You can also find them around conifers. Beautiful land!

      @@dianegebhardt674 they are a strange looking mushroom. They look like sponges! It would be very hard to poison yourself with them as they are very unique looking. There are the black darker color ones and the white. I grew up on a apple farm and we would harvest grocery bags full! During the season local and Chicago chefs will pay upwards of $80 a lb for them. They are delicious! Not like a button or a Portobello, much meatier. My mom would soak them over night in salt water and simply saute' in butter. Yummy!

    I just want to comment about getting rid of the evergreen trees, I grew up in Ohio, many people use bushes, evergreen trees, etc as a shield for holding back snow and wind. My grandparents farm had them all around the farm. Pay attention to your snowfall and where it's high and where it isn't.
    I know of a farm in the country that didn't have them during the blizzard of '78 and it caused extreme drifting and the wind blew out the windows during a blizzard. My son was in that house.
    Your property is really nice, I can see why you're so happy. (a drone for overhead shots would come in handy)

    Ashley is some property shopper! I'm so envious! That property couldn't be more perfectly suited to your wishes to customize a homestead. It was so great to see her smiling all bundled up climbing on that rock pile. She and Maverick will have their own private park to hunt for bugs, toads and lizards. No doubt, she's claimed that group of bird houses, too.
    What does Maverick think, he's probably begun talking pretty well by now. I bet Belle has fun teaching her brother the words for things now. That's a great lot of fun. Has she told you where she wants to put a tire swing yet?
    It's great to see hear the excitement in your voices; it's even showing in Ashley's smiling face. Ashley, I just wish I could hire you to shop for a homestead for me, but I know you're not going to have time for that with such a wealth of wonderful new projects to get going. I'm sure you've already done a long list of them all organized, even indexed!
    This story is really get interesting now!

    Ten acres! It's beautiful, with a ton of potential. You've got the room to spread out and utilize it for a real homestead. Our first place, forty years ago, was ten acres and we loved it. We had two children, a horse, a milk cow, and a chicken coop. We built the house ourselves. The kitchen, family room and barn had wood stoves, so we only used wood heat. With wood from our property. Sound familiar? You guys are going to love every minute of it! We both took the master gardener course through our local extension office, eight weeks of classes from entomology to organic gardening. It was free if you volunteered helping others when you completed it. Check out your local extension office for great free homesteading resources, including the Master Gardeners. I'm so very happy for you, you both look so happy! ;)

    You have a beautiful, wonderful property. It is very similar to my 10 acres in northern Wisconsin!! I have a couple acres of hay and usually get around 150 bales, which I sell or give away to my friends with livestock. You will have no problem with fodder for your animals. I also (like you) love the fact that you have woods as well as open meadows. It doesn't get any better. Well, I speak too soon, it does get better, since you HAVE NO NEIGHBORS!!!! Thats a huge bonus. In my opinion, your property is awesome, and I bet you will be there a long time. Its definitely the type of place that you don't mind putting money and sweat equity into, since it will only get better with time. I can't wait to watch you and your family enjoying you new beautiful home. Congratulations. It sure worked out for the best, even though you had to endure some pretty rough emotional time to get where you are. You did good!!!

    . . ."we have no clue. . ."---I so understand that ! Seems to me, though, that between the four of y'all there is a commonality of "clue". Great property and with your rebuilding skills, I am sure that the home and barns will reflect your joy. Best of everything to your family.

    This was a three bedroom at one time. When you look at the room where the washer/dryer hookup, and hot water heater is located. When Doug showed us the bedrooms, he also show a door maybe to a closet. This was the door to the third bedroom.

      There used to be a third bedroom where our beds are. Someone took out the wall at some point and made the living room extra long. We'll be putting a wall back up and making it a bedroom again. :)

    I'm really thrilled for you both. I know you'll have that fixed up quick! I found you when you painted a red stripe on your single wide mobile home and I've been on your journey since then. I followed you to Bobblehead Homestead and watched in awe through your visit to his homestead. Now I follow Jeff as well. Through Jeff I've met and subbed to so many other homesteaders. God bless you and God bless your family.

    It's probably hard to tell on camera, but that chicken coop really doesn't look too bad except the floor. It won't be cheap to build another.

    You have a beautiful property. I can't wait to see your videos of all your projects. One thing...please wear masks when cleaning and clearing the barn and other buildings. Here in Colorado we are very cautious when cleaning outer buildings due to the hantavirus, which is spread through mice droppings and urine. Please take precautions.

    Wonder if , as big as the living room is, if you could possibly take the end where the beds are and wall part of it off and make it 3rd bedroom. There is a doorway into the hall already. Don't know the size you could get doing that but might work. Seen any deer yet ? With Apple trees and no one having been there They might be around.

    • @diyfferent
      @diyfferent  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's the plan :) It used to be a bedroom until someone removed the wall to make the living room longer. We haven't seen any deer yet on the property, but they are out there. There are new deer tracks almost daily in the snow. :)

      @@diyfferent love it. Deer are so peaceful. I have property in West Branch Mi. Deer come right up to the Windows and look in. Lol. They seem to be attracted to the tv at night if the curtains are open.

I have a feeling that before too many more minutes, all those possibilities will be comments, haha. Very much enjoying your journey; lovely thing to think about on a Sunday afternoon.
