  • I thought this guy said some dumb stuff, so I responded. I just wanted to show that he doesn't really know what he's talking about regarding metal music. If you've never listened to metal before, I'd recommend that you give it a chance.
Here are links to the channels I mentioned. Go check them out if you want.

As someone who considers himself a fan of both trapmetal and actual metal, thanks for making this video. It clears up a ton of common misconceptions people have. I can also confirm that trapmetal is primarily based in hip-hop with some influences from metal and punk among others, rather than it being a subgenre of metal. The influences of trapmetal artists are more clearly prevalent when artists such as Zillakami (who I would consider the most influential and well-recognized artist in the scene) branch off into other types of music. His non-trap music specifically tends to show a greater influence from punk and grunge than anything else.

I mean it makes sense he's apart of the business side of music and since he's been apart of the scene for so long he has seen what makes music last in long term. If u want people to be able to make a career out of music you have to a) actually become popular enough outside of your niche audience to make enough money to keep pursuing music b) have to have a steady rotation of new bands being given opportunities to ensure the genre doesn't die out when all the legacy bands disband or have members enter the next plane c) be interesting personality wise or music wise ie if ur gonna sound like everyone else in ur genre at least be charismatic enough to draw attention to your group or if ur not charismatic enough at least have an interesting sound that separates u from the rest of the groups.
As much as people may not like it every genre needs at least 2 or 3 bands that break into the mainstream to draw in more people to the genre to then boost up the lesser known more niche bands

-He mocks rap metal from the late 90's/early 00's, yet thinks the metal crowd needs to be more open and accepting of trap and other modern rap styles
-He recently made a video on doom metal and criticized it for all sound "like Black Sabbath", when he's a fan of slam which is literally an entire subgenre of hardcore that is centered around ripping off a Suffocation song.

13:37 😤I'm mad he brought the race card into this, Immediately I'm like "Dumbass, have you not seen the early thrash, death, crossover and hardcore punk scenes?!" i'm not even American, but even I know of the fact that some of these bands had musicians of different minorities.
They weren't added there just fill a quota of "Get at least one or two Black American or Latin American people in our band so that people think we're diverse, accepting and inclusive.", it was because these guys had a love and passion for the music and wanted play in a band professionally, it was because all these guys respected each other as musicians and wanted to help grow the bands regardless of personal, cultural, political or religious beliefs.
Obvious examples: Slayer's Tom Araya, Metallica's Kirk Hammet and Rob Trujillo, Morbid Angel's Pete Sandoval, Terrorizer's Jesse Pintado and Oscar Garcia, Suffocation's Mike Smith and Terrence Hobbs, Amon Amarth's Martin Lopez, Oceano's Adam Warren etc.

Finn is like the stereotype of an American in thinking that the US is the center of the world and everything that happens in it also happens in the rest of the world
Meanwhile I sit there listening to him talking about Christian rock and metal bands that were huge in the US but nowhere else.
I mean there can even differences in sound of genre depending on what nation they're coming from.
German Thrash, Brazilian Thrash and US Thrash all have distinct sound while being Thrash.
And there's trap metal which may be and new pretty cool, I enjoyed Ghostmane for quite a while but Rap is a much less consistent genre imo.
What was popular 3 years ago, seems to pretty obscure and outdated.

Honestly though, i sometimes wonder if recapturing the mainstream focus that Metal held in the 80’s and early 90’s is important anymore. Fins entire video and conception of things is still based in that old monoculture pre-internet universe. I feel like most metal heads are fine and happy with metal existing in its own ecosystem separate from the mainstream it even outside world. They mix a variety of genres and classic eras (60s, 70, 80s, 90s) into their own unique sound...even covered 'Seals and Croft, The Status Quo, Black Sabbath, Santana, and even The Fab Four (Daytripper/She's So Heavy medley). I think you would at least respect them for their creativity in the metal genre and having one of the greatest (and tallest -ha) vocalists with an insane range and delivery. I don’t usually comment but I have really been sitting on this criticism for a while. Fin has no right to call himself the punk rock mba due to the way he gauges relevance. There is no way a punk can judge the genre based on popularity and monthly listeners when many influential bands are extremely underground, which he preaches on the regular. No, Avril lavigne is not a better punk artist than minor threat. The genre wasn’t made by rockstars getting famous. And just because it got big doesn’t mean it was the intention of the movement. When people like fin use sellouts like green day as the spokespeople for the genre known for being anti corporate/establishment that’s how you know they’re out of touch

Punk's traditionally even more focused on remaining DIY and underground than metal is... Like, there's been punk 'zines that didn't even review anything with a barcode.
I also find thr idea that metal is racist is a weird fucking take, since like shit like NSBM was always been diverse as fuck. Like, at best, the averages metalhead tolerates it if the riffs are good. But just as often, they hate the shit since it goes against the metal ideals of brotherhood and unity.

I had not seen the Punks' video about "trap metal". Thanks for introducing it to me. I have zero problem with any type of music or artist. I say this because people like "Punk Rock MBA" doing educational videos on music to "Teach" the rest of us lesser minded always go to the "they know no better" or "their minds are closed" place when one questions or disagrees with their opinions, inaccuracies or lies. Questioning, examining or debating their opinions becomes narrow minded hate speech itself and all dissenting views will not be tolerated or allowed to exist. However, I have to give it to him, he managed to work into his product about music that same BS force fed to Americans on TV and taught in Universities nightly around the country. I am sure he worked hard to come up with a way to work that BS he learned in college into his "Classroom". He basically framed it so you either like what he wants you to like or it is because of narrow-minded prejudice you don't like it. Musical taste is no longer an excuse for not supporting this genre. He might get a job offer from CNN. Question: if that example of "Trap Metal" he used was performed by a person that looked like me and the fans that didn't accept it as metal looked like the performers in the video would it still be because of their "minds not being open to it" or would that be ok because these things are a one-way street and only certain people have closed minds and other inferior traits.

    • @eddymetal
      @eddymetal  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks for watching, and thanks for sharing your take. I'd like to push back on the universities claim though. When I was in college (for biology and environmental studies) I had to take an art elective. I opted for "music listening." My experience in the course could not have gone better. The professor was super charitable to everyone's music examples. I specifically remember playing Bongzilla for the class, and rather than writing it off as some pointless stoner bullshit, he gave the music some serious consideration. He analyzed the album art (Gateway) and commented thoughtfully on his take on the music's message, instrumentation and structure, and while some of my peers were giggling, the professor totally legitimized my example (and the examples of others). I'm not sure how common my experience is, particularly as a natural science guy, but I've only had positive experiences learning about music in higher education.
Now that I think about it, not higher education, but when I took guitar in high school, the teacher didn't have any issue with me playing a metal song for each of my monthly performances. I even performed "I Got Erection" by Turbonegro once, and nobody gave me any grief.
Due to what my educational background emphasized, I don't consider myself particularly qualified to talk about music as an expert. Finn would do well to have similar humility, since his background is not in performing arts, but business. I doubt he got his idiotic takes from a classroom, as his courses usually wouldn't have been geared towards music. Dude's just a dumb, vain weirdo - to the point that I think it must be innate.

Look, there IS racism and sexism among metalheads, but that's because metalheads are people, and there is racism and sexism among people. People tend to wear shoes as well, but it'd be silly to attribute their personal or cultural prejudices (or lack thereof) to their footwear. And certainly, there are bands who produce racist content ... on purpose ... but there are countless more bands who don't, and so many metal bands that actively oppose racism. Again, metal music is made by people and some people are racist, so they communicate those beliefs in their art. But it's not metal that is racist.

Finn's trap metal obsession aged very poorly given how it's not as popular anymore.

I'm not into the really heavy stuff, like death metal or black metal...Slipknot is about as heavy as I go, but even within the realm of heavy music that I like, there's a lot of variety out there. There's an American band called Flummox who are great. They've got this quirky sense of humour mixed with Primus-esque weirdness and some really heavy riffs. Then there's Basement Orphans from the UK, they're kinda like the offspring of 80s metal and grunge. In Australia, until recently we had Glitoris who were more punk to begin with but they were expanding into all kinds of genres including metal, again not super heavy but about as heavy as the early metal bands like Black Sabbath. So that's 3 very different metal adjacent bands and that's not even scratching the surface of the really heavy stuff. Rock and metal don't need to sell out to hip-hop or whatever else is popular at the moment. If that's what the artists are into then sure, by all means bring in those influences. Also, the idea that metal is a racist genre is ridiculous. The genre got it's name from a review of an early Jimi Hendrix gig that compared his sound to that of heavy metal falling from the sky. Metallica is arguably the most well known metal band in the world and they're a pretty mixed race group.

He's a flat billed hat bro. He knows nothing about metal. I blocked his channel awhile ago because TH-cam kept trying to suggest it to me.

The album 'Hatebreeder' was such an important album for me as a teenager getting into metal, years after it was released mind you, but I still loved it. If people want to hate on CoB, I couldn't give a shit...that album and their other releases still shred circles around most newer bands/albums from that past 5-10 years.
