I just loved playing this concerto and a former teacher, Robert Gerle has a lovely recording of it. I think it is not played that much because the 1st movement is written in a manner that just sounds too labored, and the part, while truly demanding, just doesn't have the pizazz of the 4th and 5th concerti, which cohere more effectively. Perhaps if violinists just did the exquisite and truly poignant 2nd mvt , which flows beautifully and organically right into the jaunty 3rd mvt rondo it might find itself performed by Hilary Hahn and others who clearly favor # 4 and #5. That is only my guess, but I don't think violinists haven't thought about it. After all we are always looking for something others don't play. This one doesn't make the cut for a reason-My guess-that 1st mvt!
I'd love to hear the Gerle Vieuxtemps 2 recording. Perhaps someone will put it on TH-cam. I'd seen his book on practicing violin but didn't realize he was such an accomplished soloist, just listening to his Delius concerto. So evocative.
He also recorded the entire Brahms-Hungarian dances, and some other Kodaly which benefitted from his Hungarian upbringing. He also was a fine pianist, as was common for the training in those days. I remember his sitting down at the piano during at a class where he played large parts of the Bach chaconne on the piano. Nice to know his still has fans. I notice on-line he donated all his marked up scores to the U of Md archives, and I found it interesting to reflect on his life's work residing there. @@nightreader5879
I used to listen to his recording when I was young, it's how I got to know the piece, and aspire to play it. More recently, I discovered his book on bowing as a teacher and it is really a wonderful resource. It must have been special studying with him.
@@duvidl58 Thanks for your comment. There are so many things I admired about him. First, he was a splendid pianist. He could sit down at the piano and play large sections of the Bach chaconne. Second, I spent a summer music camp with him in Ohio. We borrowed my dad's car. He did a lot of the driving. I would swear he changed lanes with the same precision as he changed strings in bowing. Fortuitously he met his wife on this trip. Concert pianist Marilyn Neeley recorded Beethoven Sonatas with him. They also had a child Andrew who has been successful in his own music career, last I checked. Finally, when he moved to DC where I am. I got to honor him by showing how much I admired this concerto. I played it for him, decades after having been his student. One ancecdote his record jacket highlights. His manager repeated it ad nauseum. So much so, he grew tired of it. In Budapest during WW II he was hiding out. It was winter, and there was no heat. Russian solders had taken over. He and his fellow students were caught and taken outside to be shot. But Gerle had his violin with him. The soldier asked, maybe commanded "Tschaikovsky Concerto." Apparently frozen and unpracticed fingers rose to the occasion. He was not a German soldier in hiding, they realized. His violin had saved his life! Of such luck, a life was saved, and truly well and fully lived. Best luck with this concerto. I no longer play, but the slow movement will be a delight whenever you get to it.
