Don't doubt yourself. Oil is very forgiving, you have a masterful technique. Those museum pieces have been restored and retouched several times. Respect your own work.
When you laid down the first layer of highlights, I got goosebumps! She’s stunning! And your skill seems to be multiplying exponentially. I love your exploration of art!
Studies like this are a fantastic way for younger artists to develop a true “style” The key is to study from a wide variety of artists, if you only study from one you’ll only be a watered down version of that one.
Yes I totally agree! Learning from a variety of artists also helps you discover the styles/techniques that you naturally gravitate towards, which helps you develop your own style as well 🎨
It's so beautiful! It must be so hard to leave behind the hyper-styled beauty standards you are used to correcting for. The larger 'oversized alien eye' becoming a more sunken smaller eye, longer faces/chins, skin without excessive "buoyancy". Finding and capturing realism must be such a difficult curve to take. 👏🏽
Haha yes I'm always fighting my natural tendencies to stylize the faces/proportions like I normally do, but it's a very fun challenge to take on and I'm starting to find a lot of joy in training my eye to be able to observe and capture proportions accurately. Will definitely be revisiting the stylized look in my personal work at some point, though perhaps will experiment with different ways to stylize/exaggerate the features. 🥰
If you want to mimic Bouguereau you would have to do dozens of glazes If you read about him you will know the pain staking ways he did it. It was all done by glazes to end up with the most realistic skin eyes and clothing that no artist ever achieved do his standard absolutely my favourite realistic portrait artist
Wow! You are really transforming your body of work. Loving the new and still love the old. Thank you for sharing your journey with us! It’s so inspiring watching you practice new (old) techniques and styles.
5:11 I literally say that "This is the amazing and emotional message that I ever heard in my life". I feel inspired so much and want to learn how to make classical paintings very soon. You're so incredible, I love you🖤
This is an excellent re-creation of a Bouguereau face! Brava!!! I'm the Studio Director of the Angel Academy of Art, Florence, and I'm passing this video on to our students. I love the way in which you started the underdrawing (big freehand massing, followed by smaller-form massing-this is ther way many of the Old People began their paintings, rather than with outlines-Bouguereau, though, used tracings of his cartoons). I prefer your way of starting. The Old People would learn by making copies; they then applied what they had learned to work from life. Nowadays, it is usually taught the other way round, which is incorrect from the classic point of view.
OMG what an honor to be noticed by you and to have my video shown to your students! 😍 I'm attending an ARC certified atelier as well (in Seattle) and we frequently chat about the wonderful ateliers in Florence and how inspirational you all are 🥰 It would be a dream come true to visit your atelier one day - I'm so impressed by your and your students' work!
Also thank you for your words of encouragement regarding this painting's process! I'm a first year student at my atelier so I am still only allowed to do drawing for class, but I was so inspired seeing other students' oil master copies that I decided to try it out myself at home. But because I didn't work on this in class, I only realized after showing the partially finished piece to my teacher that this was not exactly how Bouguereau started his paintings (my teacher said that Bouguereau used a grisaille in his earlier works, but for the most part he used a colorful ébauche layer first). 😅 But I'm glad you hear you actually prefer this method because I enjoy it too, especially for smaller studies! It feels more raw and intuitive in some way 💕
I'm so happy fory you, Happy ^-^. Seeing how you just gave yourself an opportunity to try new things and breathe again with new energy. You needed that for yourself and your personal growing.
What an interesting sense of deja-vu!! A few years ago, I had an occasion to see a painting called "The Song of the Nightingale" by Monsieur Bouguereau (whom I had never previously heard of btw!) of a peasant girl sitting outside somewhere probably just chilling during a lunchbreak from work, when this songbird starts singing a beautiful song just for her, and she turns to listen. That painting creates an intense feeling of connection between the girl and the singing bird that , needless to say, I took a million photos of this pic, and I messed around with recreating it with a bit of my "style" thrown in. As I'm watching you do your study of your Bouguereau model's face,...it's the same gal, right down to the way she looks off to the side, what an enigmatic face, and you've captured it really well!! I'm glad I'm not the only one intrigued enough by a Bouguereau painting of this amazing model, to do study of it.
I feel like I always have to be the questioning voice from the crowd as I question always (for myself included) what we are trying to learn as we use our ingrained techniques to attempt to copy another artist who used/uses a different method? It seems he was very particular in his support selection and how it was prepared and then spent a very long while on his under drawing and transferred it to the canvas and reinforced it with india ink. From there he definitely would use a variety of techniques of glazing and direct painting to achieve his subtle effects. The point is, is that we are never 100 percent sure of his methods, but definitely can learn much from his color harmonies, his sense of beauty via proportions, and his rigorous study of anatomy down the the smallest measure…
this is so so amazing i love your videos so much way back when i first started watching art videos on youtube and i also also made a study of your piece as well but it didn't even turn close to your artwork you're such an inspiration to me and i hope one day i'll start oil painting as well
What I've noticed about the older portraiture techniques?? (DaVinci, Sargent, etc) It seems more like sculpting with paint as opposed to "painting" with it. It is very nuanced.
I love it! Bougeureau usually did not do a grisaille, but started with a slightly too saturated base color and dulled it down with the subsequent layers. So I guess this is his style but not his technique. Nevertheless, it looks gorgeous and very well done!
Yeah I only found out after finishing my grisaille layer and showing my teacher that Bouguereau used the ebauche approach for most of his later works. However in his earlier works, he did use grisaille (according to my teacher 💕)
I am 17 year old and i want to learn old master type paintings i am searching a way to learn it from past 2 years but i dont have a tutor i dont know where to learn it step by step can you please tell me a path to follow please
Hey! If you can help me with something I'll appreciate...I've just seen your amazing Sqarespace setup video and is amazing one. my question is when I tried to pay for my plan, I've been asked to add VAT registration number. I don't have one. Could u please explain me how did you added to your Sqarespace? or is something that I need to register to HMRC.?. Thank you so much.
Very beautiful your shared video I was really amazed Congratulations keep on sharing your beautiful videos thanks for sharing please keep in touch please,.💗 .. ,❤ ..,❤ .. ❤,..
May I ask you? Is this painting done during one - two hours or several days? Did you apply paint layers wet on wet or did you have to wait between layers?
💎✨👌Neat showing off your mastery of the techniques. Look-y you... doing the same thing Da Vinci and Michelangelo did... which is study the Masters. #Mimicry

one thing he also used was Siccative de cortai which allowed him to do so many glazes
