I think this song works a bit better in the flow of the album than on its own. It’s not mind blowing but it’s a fun heavy song in the middle of a lot of heady stuff
"Little Buddy" was what The Skipper called Gilligan. So I take it as a term of endearment. I say it that way, to squirrels and children and what not. Although it is more commonly used sarcastically, and The Skipper usually used it when trying to set up some manipulation (play nice to get things), so it could be condescending for sure, but not always. It's never a full insult but if tossed at the wrong time it can be very inflammatory.
And yes I learned all my social skills from Gilligan's Island.
OGT is just another way for Keenan to say this guy was claiming to be an original fan. I have no idea if it’s a thing now, but it certainly wasn’t a term back then. And no, there was no “Tool Army” in 96. I don’t know any Tool fan from the early-mid 90s who would claim to be part of such a thing. That phrase is entirely a concoction of the internet - more specifically social media. It certainly didn’t exist before 2004 (and probably much later) since it was most likely coined by people who became fans after the advent of social media. When Aenima was released, and even years after, Tool fans were just called… uh, fans. Just like any other band.
OG stands for Original Gangster and as mentioned earlier it refers to someone that's been a fan from jump or pretty close to when they first came out. Whomever they're talking about they are totally clowning him from the dope Beastie (Beastie Boys) T shirt to the "fresh" tattoo that claimed he was an OG.

If you want an aggressive Tool song with pissed off Maynard then "Jerk Off" is probably the best example of that. Any of their live shows from the early days will have a much more in your face, confrontational Maynard giving the crowd some nice scowls and getting right up in their faces. Lol

I'm "the man" refers to the 60's-80's idea of "standing up to the man" or laying down to the man. Basically those who sell out to the 1% elite. And OGT is original gangster tool, something early fans called themselves when they first broke out

Funny fact (for me anyway). In Spanish, "OGT" reads as "ojete", which colloquially means "anus". So "HE was OGT" sounds kind of appropriate in the context of the song.

At my old job I used to say, “tighten up, little buddy” to the other fellas. In context, it was very clearly code for “hey asshole, you’re getting sloppy and I have to fix your work”. I do call my dogs “little buddy” affectionately though. 🤷♂️

Well, you got almost two views from me on this one. I had almost finished the video and got distracted by something, so I came back and rewatched. I've read that the whispering is Maynard saying, "consume, be fruitful and multiply" or "consumer, be fruitful and multiply". I don't know if that's true. I've never been able to make it out. I love this angry Maynard, telling this guy off. The guy, himself is a sellout, with his vans Beastie Boys t-shirt, the piercings and tattoos, that everyone thought were so edgy and cool back then, etc., calling Maynard/Tool sellouts. This is good for those times that you're really pissed off and want to let off steam. Haha! Have a great weekend, Lauren! And Mocha! : )

Sweet video! I love this song because we’re all forced to sell out in some way all the time and calling others for being sell outs can be hypocritical and kind of cruel. We’re all just trying to survive and there’s nothing wrong with selling out and buying into our flawed society, jumping on some band wagons, and putting on a bit of a show. Just don’t be mean, and don’t act like you’re better than others.

Yeah, not my favorite Tool song either, but it's really fun to hear Maynard sing these lyrics. The instrumentation is good as well and the bass does stand out.

Music artist usually work harder than proff. actors, Maynard new that and they wrote this in about a few days saying FUCK YOU see ya as fast as we can get away as we can
You’re thinking about the song “Ticks and Leeches”, not this one. Ticks and Leeches is about the record label telling tool to write a harder song for the record, so Tool wrote a really heavy song sarcastically asking the company in the lyrics if that’s what they wanted, while referring to them as “tick and peeves”, basically parasites.
This song is about fans that sanctimoniously claim they are above the commodification of culture, while hypocritically engaging in the commodification of cultural, and Maynard is calling these people out… Maynard is basically saying no one is “pure”, and we all buy into commodity culture, so people that call Tool “sellouts”, while wearing brand name clothing, drinking brand name soda etc. are complete hypocrites, because all the stuff they wear and consume is a part of our capitalist commodity culture.

I think the favorite song hopping just follows whichever song soothes your current mood.
This has been my favorite Tool song a few times, but very rarely. The thing is their songs cover every mood so when you float into more of a road-rage mood then this song is perhaps the best because it's simple and just about f-u-buddy and there is no math and very limited poetry and it's short. But if you never get into a f-yall sort of mood then probably this would never end up filling the tool-du-jour favorite spot.
And if you got caught yelling f-u-buddy at the top of your lungs, which does feel good, you can just say "hey I was singing along to this song (little buddy...)"
I’m always surprised when don’t get the point of this song. First OGT is OG Tool. Second, the first chorus is a story about an OG tool fan telling them they sold out. The “I’m the man” lyric is a reference to the pejorative ‘man’, not the imma badass ‘man’🤦♂️. It’s not about people thinking they know who he is. It’s about people calling him a sellout, A HOOKER WITH A PENIS, and he’s saying yeah I have bills and you’re paying them.
When Maynard says everyone is “the man” he says that because that guy accused him of sucking up to “the man” and in Maynard’s eyes we are all “the man” in that we are all consumers that people producing product for have to please, including Maynard. Maynard is calling himself a “Hooker with a Penis” but that guy calling him a sellout is too.

But i was agreeing with you about listening to album versions first. For example I've seen countless reactions to live shows on YT and those shows suck for a first time listener since there is no context. About the only exception to this is the MTV Unplugged sessions.

There is a Rumour that its about a conversation between Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit and Maynard. But its obviously more of a broad commentary on people who ironically attack their favourite artists as "Sellouts" especially when the artists are producing music their accusers don't want. I mean you wouldn't call a shop or office worker a sellout for trying to earn a living and musicians arguably pursue their passion more than anyone so too call them a sell out while claiming to be a fan is just silly.

Hardcore fans are the worst... if u don't meet their expectations, they tend to get visceral and violent when they meet u. So I can understand Maynard's frustration w/ some self-important pr!ck telling him off.
James Hetfield (Metallica) recalled that after Metallica released a music video for 'One' in 1989, a fan spat in his face... "You sold out, man... you said u were never gonna make a video!" was the answer Hetfield got.
There are still Iron Maiden fans today that insist that original singer Paul Di'Anno was the best and everything after his 2 records were no good... Old Genesis fans did not take kindly to Phil Collins taking over vocals from Peter Gabriel in 1976, or the band's success after he left.
