I grew up in Belfast and you saw the same thing during the Troubles - two-tier policing. The clear indication was always what way the police faced when rival groups confronted each other; then you knew the bias. I knew England was lost back in 2004 when I visited from America. We were on a group bus, and the driver (a Muslim man) began shouting “you will not discuss religion on this bus!” We knew we were not in a free country.
You should have stood up and said "We certainly can - you cannot dictate to us what we can talk about". If somebody shouts at you whilst they are at work or conveying you in a passenger vehicle you should call the Police. Otherwise, everybody get off the bus and sue for a full refund and out of pocket expenses.

My dad did too, in his 20s, he went into Europe into liberating the concentration camps such as Belsen, Auschwitz. Guarded Irma Gieser for a while. He was affected with what he saw for the rest of his life. I think the lawlessnes after the end of the war was even worse. My dad and your granddad fought for us and our future for peace.
