The Maersk Montana, a container ship style cargo ship, is anchored outside of the Port Of Houston in a crowded anchorage. The port is shut down due to the severe weather that plagued Texas including dense fog, subzero temperatures, freezing rain and snow. The weather has caused significant infrastructure issues with power outages and water shortages. This video briefly discusses how watch officers stand anchor watch to ensure the ship is not dragging anchor.

Over the years I worked on inland tugs, harbor tugs out of NYC, research vessels for the US Navy where I was based out of Spain, Sicily and Italy, offshore supply boats, anchor handling boats, crew boats, utility boats and lift boats in the offshore oil field in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Mexico. Hardest schedule was 90 and 30 on the research vessels, 28 and 14, 20 and 10, 14 and 7, 7 and 7 and lastly 14 and 14 on the other boats I worked on. Wish I could have gotten my union card and worked on a ship. Once the water gets in your blood you will never be the same. Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean and The Mediterranean Sea. I miss it so much! My respect to you! Safe trips!
That’s quite a variety of vessels you worked on! I would love to be able to check out some other vessels myself. My union does represent a few research vessels, and we also have an inland branch of our union that represents some tugs, ferries and supply vessels as well. By the way, I completely understand what you mean when you say once water gets in your blood you are never the same!

@@BryanBoyle we were very fortunate. Lost power for most of the week but managed to stay warm with a gas fireplace. A lot of others weren’t so lucky.
Are the oil rigs, "jackup" oil rigs? I worked at Bethlehem Steel and shipbuilding in Beaumont way back in 1981 for about 7 months, welding on new and repairing old jackup oil rigs. They laid everyone off by early spring of 81 when there was so much oil on the market. I was on 3rd shift and wow did it get cold at night out on the main decks welding on the rigs next to the Sabine River, I think it was. Dated a cajun woman from there for a while. She wasn't a ragen cajun. 🤣 The water is only 18 ft. deep under the keel??? I wanted to ask you how deep the water was. Nice music. That is one rusty looking ship. Guess they don't invest in paint very often. I heard you say 90 feet about a shot, whatever that is, but that sounds more like it in depth. Thanks.
The up close drone shot is a platform rig that was built over a well. I did some research on it and apparently the company went bankrupt and that rig is currently abandoned among many others in the gulf. The water is only 18 feet under the keel and we have a draft of around 35 feet. The ship definitely has some rust on her but next voyage she is scheduled to go to shipyard and will come out looking really nice! The 6 shots are referring to the length of anchor chain we had out, which would be 540 feet of chain! Thanks John for your comments as always, I appreciate your anecdotes as well :)
@@BryanBoyle Ok, so you are setting low in the water at 35 feet @ 18 feet. Good think I don't do that. I would sorta freak me out. Thanks for checking on the rigs. The jackup rigs are quite distinguishable compared to other rigs. They usually have 3 to 4 gigantic round legs that raise them up or down. Thanks for all your information. Keep warm.

@@Odin029 in that case, why don't all commercial ships look like this? It rather seems like a case of the shipping line maximizing profits ahead of dry-docking it every few years for a repaint.

How can you possibly attest to the ships state based purely on external cosmetics?
@@lolzlolz69 when entering a dry dock for "cosmetic" work they also undertake major mechanical work. Would you expect a used car to be perfectly maintained if the outside looked like this?

Thanks! We got a light dusting but mostly sleet and ice. We had to salt the decks down in many areas to prevent crew from slipping

Thanks! I filmed a short video in port and uploaded a couple days ago about the port of Houston being closed. I just decided to upload that one before this since it was more relevant to what’s going on in Houston with the weather. We are actually in port now working cargo after sitting at the dock for 3 days

Hard to fathom the force of the wind on such a large surface as a loaded container ship. It would be interesting to have a "device" on the chain to "read the load".
That would be interesting if there were devices like that mounted on the chain. As of now, we have a deck rover that checks the anchor every hour and reports to us the direction the chain is pointing and whether it is light, moderate, or heavy strain. I guess that’s the next best thing lol

Thank you, We always try to verify our position using multiple methods in case the GPS stops working or is giving inaccurate readings.

Thanks! I appreciate your continued support of the channel. There will definitely be some supply chain issues including possible gas shortages since the tankers couldn’t come in for a few days. Fortunately, the port reopened yesterday and we started our cargo ops this morning with the plan of departing tomorrow. I know the Houston ship channel has a lot of problems with closing down due to fog, but I’m not sure about the last time the ports here had closed for this long if ever.

Yes built in 2006. It’s scheduled to go to shipyard end of March/early April!

Hello Bryan. Just found your channel. Awesome content! I have read many comments and mine are the same as others...You do a great job showing the details of various operations and the equipment. I have been sailing for years, and flying. But I passed on the chance to go to Piney Point. (Girlfriend issues).
What is your current rank w Maresk? Did you attend Piney Point? How did you get into this profession? Do you have a video showing tugboat action? Have you been to Oakland CA? The Alameda channel has a crazy turning basin. But I dont understand why some boats push off the dock and use tugs to spin around and others go to the turning basin. Sorry lots of questions but You seem to be interested in "teaching". Thanks. I think you might need a haircut soon.
Hope your ship provisions with extra for days like this! In the US Navy the friggin bean counters control all rations and even one day waiting outside San Francisco Harbor put cig prices on the black market up to 10 bucks a smoke!
Wow that’s crazy! Yes we have plenty of rations and even took on more food provisions while we were here in Houston.

Brian, who decides which ships come in first? Is there a master plan somewhere or is it first come first serve?
On liner ships we have our schedules laid out in advance for months. At some point these berths get locked in once a port knows the ship is on schedule, but if there are delays and ships are backed up at anchor, I honestly don’t know if it really is first come first serve. I swear I’ve seen ships come into anchor after us and go to their berths before us. I’ll look into this though. As ships crew, we really just go where the office tells us to and at the time they want us there.

6 shots * 90'/shot = 540' which is just under 1/10 of a mile. With as much cargo as you have and as big as that ship is, it's hard to believe that one anchor can hold it but then again, I'm a land lubber who doesn't know shit about ships.
And all those ships on the horizon look like they're perched up on a shelf in a house or something. Pretty wild how they all look even across the horizon.

I work on a ATB in the Genesis fleet. The ship life would have been great 20 years ago! But I’m rotten and like my 28/28 schedule now 😂 But we were at anchorage and I was seeing two huge container ships off in the distance. Since seeing the video I was assuming you were one of them

Another question I have about being a Mariner aboard one of these Container Ships. If you are from the United States like I am do you have to be aboard an American flagged ship like Maersk Montana or could you be aboard one flagged to another country like the Emma Maersk that's flagged in Denmark where the company is headquartered?
We usually Just sail on our own flagged ships. The pay is much stronger relative to our standard of living and we usually are part of a shipping union and have to stick to our own contracts. Check out www.gcaptain.com for some more info on joining. They have great forums on there to reference

Do you guys know what are there in those boxes? type of cargo?
No we do not have access to that information. The only containers we are told what’s inside are the hazardous cargos (so we know how to properly fight fires that could start from them) as well as a general overview of the types of material inside the refrigerated cargos such as frozen fish or blood plasma.
How long are those anchor chains?
We had 6 shots out in this video which is equal to 540 feet (1 shot equals 90 ft). I’d have to double check how many shots of chain we actually carry though.
