That first clean passage sounded almost identical. Hearing them side by side just makes me love them both equally. The EVH sounds like it’s meant to be some kind of modern Marshall. This video kind of made me want both.
The 100 watt version of the 5150III EL34 has a much better blue channel. You can get it to sound just like a Marshall JVM on that channel, especially if you put it through something with Greenbacks or T-75's.
Super helpful. A lot of people are, like me, deciding between these two. Evh has more mids. With your setup, I prefer the Marshall.

I enjoyed them both! From this vantage not being in the room I would go with the EVH! Now I'm gonna unpack my new(used) Marshall JVM205 that arrived today just in time for Christmas. Have a wonderful Christmas Jay! Blessings!
I love my 205h head. I've used it in a band setting and it cut through as expected. I always say the real test is how an amp performs in a band setting. That being said, I've also owned the evh, but the 6l6 version, and it was nice in a band setting as well.
thejay I’m actually shocked how well the JVM holds to modern metal tones. If you venture through forums for 5 seconds everyone says Marshall can’t pull it off well...but this thing is sick. I had to crank the lows a bit more than the EVH to het them eye level but they sound really similar! Kinda of a taste sort of thing i guess.
both are great amps. I have evh and I love it, but to get the most out of it I need to use the g12h30 anniversary speakers. but if someone is looking for the true marshall tone. Just a marshall to have that tone. For this I have a 2525h mini jube and a jvm 1w 50th anniversary edition.
To my ears, the Marshall was the clear winner - in this video. Even though it wasn't dialed in for vintage character on any of the tones, you can still hear many the characteristics coming from the JVM that has made Marshall the stuff of legend from days gone by. The EVH is fine, but it just sounds like another manufacturer doing their version of modern gain and that always falls short for us old times that developed our love of music and ear for tone back in the days when the original Marshall SLP's and 1987's and eventually the original JCM800's were the best rock tones ever. And while the JVM isn't truly going to match the exact tone and feel of the original "plexi", it gets a hell of lot closer than the EVH. Throw in the versatility of the JVM and you've got a real winner for the gigging musician.

JVM has more girth i think you need to increase the resonance on the EVH?
The 205H slaps. So versatile. I have the 6L6 evh as well. Both are sick.
both are great for sure

JVM sounded thick and beefy,, totally in love
Glad you like it!
El34 with the c137 mod is tough to beat.
GREAT job on how to compare Amps! Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
EVH cleans were nice. I like the percusiveness of the Marshall.

I have to say I go with the Marshall but I like the 6L6 version of the EVH. I have a lot of videos on my channel and they're the 2 amplifiers I use.
To me they sound surprisingly similar, but I think the evh sounded a bit better
Hey, which song is that from 1:43? I can't think of it
I just bought a JVM205H 50w. What are your panel tone settings on the clean and overdrive channels? I play classic rock and heavy metal.
Both are killer the evh just sounds like a marshall on steroids
I have an EVH so it pains me to say I preferred the Marshall lol it has that certain chimey punch that only amps like that give
Closely matched, with the Marshall a bit more compressed... at least through a pair of computer monitors.
I have both amplifiers and I feel like the JVM can actually create nicer clean tones but the EVH has more punch when it comes to gain.
great to hear a demo that isn't thrash metal.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching
besides the sound the jvm has tons more features
Too many for me
Marshall all the way!
On the new price, where I live (europe) the EVH costs €1100,- the Marshall costs €1000,- brand new. So the Marshall is actually cheaper
The EVH may sound better here.
JVM bottom end blows away the EVH..
JVM sounds fuller
I hate Marshall but mate the classic Marshall tone are unbeatable, it's very iconic.
JVM205H
Marshall.
Both sound the same
jvm 🤔
I hate marshalls because their stupid features they fuc...d up half of amp. EVH is 95% perfect amp
Evh
The EVH was easily better.
