Hey I just picked this machine up. Do you know if the machine is supposed to be able to be pushed by hand with the bypass valve open on the back. Mine still rolls when engaged
I recently purchase a S130. Love the mower, it rides and drives so much better than my last mower.. Your videos were very informative and helped me decide whichj mower to purchase.
I just picked one up, I released the axle lever on the back and pushed it in the garage, now mine still can be pushed when the lever is pushed in is this normal?
I had my S130 delivered Fri. I learned a lot on your series. Had to have one. My LT160 was good for 20 years. Hope the 130 does as well. I never thot I would own a Johnny Popper 2cyl. LOL
@@silasaqui8833 I bot the S130 partly because it has a dashboard gas guage. The lower guage wouldnt be too bad. Better than the clear site guage on my old 160LT. But your point is well taken.
Got mine for nearly half price a Lowe's two years ago. It had less than an hour on it. My only gripe at this point is the volume when the deck is engaged. My mow-able yard is a little over a half acre, and this beauty knocks that out in no time.
Really enjoy your videos. Always thorough and informative. I have a question regarding the S130 and have not been able to get an answer from John Deere and hope that you can help. I have the 2022 version of the S130 and after I purchased it I noticed that it only has one spindle cover. In your review of the 2023 version, you mention that it has 2 spindle covers, but the video of the deck shows only one cover, just like my 2022. Do you know why this model only has the one spindle cover? It would appear to be a safety issue to not have one of the spindles covered and like you said, the cover also is used as a belt guide. It does seem odd that this is the way John Deere designed this deck. Any information on why this is designed this way would be helpful. Thanks
I had this question myself, and realized afterwards that I said it wrong in the video. Since this machine has an electric PTO button instead of a manual engage, the belt stays tight around the pulleys at all times. Since this is the case there is not a need for the second spindle cover. These are not John Deere's words, this is just me speaking from experience and what my thoughts are as to why the second cover is not there. This also allows for easier cleaning and easier servicing for that side. I personally would want the cover on mine but this may have also been another way to cut a small amount of cost from the mower.
I ordered this same mower back in Sept. from the same JD salesman I've known for 35+ yrs, he's the same salesman for my buddy on his 3700 acre farm which I've helped for 40yrs. Hope he gives me a good price, I didn't even ask what it would be, just wanted it for my .23 acres, yeah less than a 1/4 acre yard.. lol April of 2022 the Lowe's price for this S130 was $2399.
Thanks for the review! I bought one. Question: my tires say 10psi and 14psi yet the pre-delivery check list said 30psi and there is 30psi in the tires. What do you recommend? - Thanks
If you were mowing about 1/2 acre, would you buy the S120, S130, or S140? The prices are not that much different, is on a better machine than the others?
I’ve watched many of your reviews on these mowers and they have been very helpful. What size model do you recommend for mowing 2 acres that are relatively level and open? The local dealer suggested the X350.
I think anywhere from a S110 all the way up to an X350 would be fine. It really boils down to what all features do you want on the mower, what deck size you want, and how comfortable do you want the seat to be.
I got a S130. I'm about to change out the quick-change oil filter for the first time. I saw a video of a guy who used a hand pump to pump out more oil from the oil dip stick tube. He stuck one end of the Plastic hose down into the dip stick tube and pumped out more of the old oil. Do you see any Problem with doing this. It seems like a good way to get more of the old oil out without doing the conversion. Thanks

very informative video! appreciate it! just ordered my S130 and will have it next week. It's coming assembled, will it be fully ready to go other than adding gas?
As an E120 owner, I would suggest checking tire pressures and deck leveling, before using for the first time. (I believe the front tire pressures are 14lbs, rear 10lbs). My 2019 E120 still looks and runs like new at almost 100 hrs.
I did it again. I slammed into my seat (S170) and broke it again! This is my third one I’ve busted. I can hear the springs make weird noises under the seat when I fall in.
I notice that the grease points for the spindles have been moved to the top of the spindle. Does this make it more difficult to use the grease gun? Last year’s model had them on the side with easy access. Does the deck require removing to apply the spindle grease?
When the key was on the hour meter measured the time starting when the key was on until the battery ran flat. It took 64 hours and made my hour meter long by that many hours. There are no plastic transmissions on the S series. This used to be the lowest model option in the 100 series but has since been removed. You get into the 2 cylinder options starting at the S120. I have videos going over most of them. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

About the 30 second oil change. By the time you find oil and top it off it's a minimum 9 minutes. You can drain and replace oil and filter in under 14 minutes and relace the dirty oil completely. I'd rather spend an extra 6 minutes 1 time a year and do it RIGHT! Sorry John Deere. You screwed the pooch on that one. Build an adapter to filter base so you can use present base and only have to add drain extension. Oh, and quit listening to Briggs and Stratton. My S140 cuts off about 10 minutes into mowing. It only has 40 hours and just started doing this at the end of last year. Under warranty, I took it to a John Deere service center. Mine started dripping oil onto the muffler after less than an hour of use. Any idea why? I can't see any source of the oil leakage except for what is smoking off the muffler when I point it down hill...
That is strange. Only thing I could think of it that maybe it was overfilled with oil when it was being set up. I would keep an eye on it and see if it continues to leak.
I bought this mower new for $2,395 two year ago at Lowes....now it's $2,795. That's just not right, 400 more for the same exact mower. It cuts great, plenty of power to mow my acre. If you have an uneven yard though it rides rough even after I let a little air out of the tires. Probably needed a wider mower with more stability for my uneven ground. Also it takes a while with just a 42 inch cut. If you have a flat, regular sized yard this is fine, but expensive....there might be cheaper options.
I agree that the price change is a bummer, but you have to keep in mind everything has gone up so therefore the cost to make them has gone up. It doesn't help that we are in such a tough economical state right now. Hopefully there is a break coming.

That reverse safety is so dumb. Having to remember to press that button every time you need to reverse is annoying. My father in law has a John Deere lawn tractor, and I hate using it, just cause of that feature. I have a Cub Cadet that I use in soft areas of my yard that my zero turn would struggle to mow, and all you have to do is turn the key to a reverse setting and push a button. You don't have to do anything else, unless you get off the mower or turn it off. Everything else about the John Deere is nice though, I think his is an x330.
I hear this complaint a lot, but I also understand the theory behind it. Having to push the button helps with awareness and helps to remind the operator to look behind them before they start mowing in that direction.
@Cipher Code I figured so, Iknew the seat safeties were simple to bypass. I may bring it up to him. I only use his mower on his property, and that has only been twice in the last three years.
Yea, you wanna spend the money on a higher trim. Even the x are kinda cheap on the low end unless you get power steering otherwise it has the same tiny steering gear that wears out and transmissions that aren’t beefy. Lots of small things are what made me move WAY up from a d120 to a z920m. Obviously you get what you pay for, I don’t think I would look under a x500 series or z700 for my personal preference with all the features.
@@FishFind3000 x500 and z700 is $6-$8k. Little unnecessary and out of the range of the average homeowner. If you own that much land youd be better off with a tractor with a mower attachment. If you're a landscaper then I could see it.
The new lawn tractors have horrible paint my neighbor has this same tractor keeps it inside and the paint is coming off buy the foot rests underneath the seat paints all coming off they use no primer on these tractors!
I bet if you offered both oil change filters from the factory everyone would choose the original style. Hope the engineers nephew leaves the design work to the adults.
I think it would be interesting to see the amount of conversion kits that have been bought as opposed to the amount of the easy change oil filters. I think that would give us a pretty good idea on how people feel about it.

@@Dale37 you can easily bypass it,at your own risk. There are plenty of videos online. It takes less than 5 minutes.
@Cipher Code I figured so, Iknew the seat safeties were simple to bypass. I may bring it up to him. I only use his mower on his property, and that has only been twice in the last three years.
My oil filler cap is black
130 is the 120 with a bumper
Buy an x series haha! I’m kidding all John Deere’s are good. I’m parcel to my x380
I don’t disagree here.
Well said, by the X - series and also they will cost more for sure. Overall it's the best choice because the quality build will pay off.
The new lawn tractors have horrible paint my neighbor has this same tractor keeps it inside and the paint is coming off buy the foot rests underneath the seat paints all coming off they use no primer on these tractors!
This is interesting. Have they come to any conclusions to why it's doing this?
@@WesternEquipment it looks like no primer
I bet if you offered both oil change filters from the factory everyone would choose the original style. Hope the engineers nephew leaves the design work to the adults.
I think it would be interesting to see the amount of conversion kits that have been bought as opposed to the amount of the easy change oil filters. I think that would give us a pretty good idea on how people feel about it.
3 grand is way to high!!
I totally understand your feeling here. Prices on everything are high right now.
I know it's 300 bucks more this year at around 2800 or so. Glad I picked mine up last year
It's a bit overpriced
I understand the feeling. With prices going up on everything it makes all prices seem high.
Everything is higher. Just the way it is
Junk. I don't know what's going on with John Deere. Everyone I know is having one issue or another with JD lawn tractors. I did get 13 years out of my last one and it was a great product. Not anymore, I went with another brand.
What brand. I'm looking
Please share what you went with
@@Nick-NY Cub Cadet XT1 50"
2 cylinders with 3 blades and fabricated deck. Very happy with it. Had my JD for years and served me well, but they've cheaped out on the quality on the new ones. I'm 13+ years of owning the JD, I've replaced the deck (rust out) 2x and that wasn't a cheap fix. The Cub Cadet has the fabricated deck and the JD's deck is stamped. The fabricated deck is far superior.
@@TheFishingStation thanks!
Nice but crap seat, it crack in 2 first years, verry bad qualite plastic...
Deeres are garbage
So you clicked on a John Deere video, left a comment, and helped boost the video? Makes sense, thanks for the comment!
Just because of this comment I'm buying an S130 Today.🤣
Enjoy your MTB.
yikes i don't like those uncovered deck spindles. my 2022 s120 really stacks debris in there bad.
They definitely will and this is why it’s important to make sure and blow them out after every cut.
That quick change thing is garbage, it’s a scam ripoff.
