I still own the Sega CD version.. The OST was insane and driving scenes were mind blowing back in 1993

I love the driving stages on the Sega CD version. I always felt this was the ONLY game ever made to really utilize the power of the Sega CD's scaling and rotation capabilities AND actually be a fun game to play. Nice job, Sega ;-)
That's true. If The Sega CD would have done more of this, they would have destroyed Nintendo. Missed opportunity
@@ericross441 But unfortunately the Mega-CD shared a similar fate like the 3DO and Amiga CDTV: Those damn FMV "games" with hilariously bad acting and barely any interaction (alongside some boring point-and-click games), they are the main reasons these 3 consoles, that I mentioned before, failed and got a really bad reputation as time went on!
@@dinohermann1887 Yeah I tell anyone who bashes the Sega CD (I know you're not bashing it btw) to play the traditional (non-FMV) games on it like this game, Final Fight CD, Sonic CD, Terminator, Amazing Spider-Man vs The Kingpin, Shining Force CD, the 4 Working Designs RPGs, Keio Flying Squadron, Lords of Thunder, etc. and you'll see how good the games are. Imagine if they were able to steal Square away from Nintendo a generation before the PS1 did due to the CD format. Would've been amazing. I'm still pissed that SNES got the shitty port of Rondo and Sega CD never got a Castlevania game. A Sega CD Rondo port could have been amazing. A Contra game on that system would've been something too.
My mom got this for me from the discount bin at Kaybee Toys for $14.99 and it was worth every penny and would've been worth 3-4x that price considering how much I played it.

I can see why the SFX have been changed.
With the Genesis version they had to make sure that they didn't interfere with the music, but with the SCD version all FM channels were available as all the music were CD-tracks.
The new effects sound pretty weird though.
Great job! "Batman Returns" for the Sega CD was another one of the reasons I became a retro gamer and got another Sega CD after selling my original. Those driving stages really spoiled me regarding what developers could do with the Sega CD hardware. Other system pushers on the Sega CD include "The Adventures of Batman & Robin" and "Soul Star". Love this new series! Keep up the great work!

I don't think Final Fight has actually been released on the Sega Genesis, it's on SNES and Sega CD but not on Genesis :/
Genstar MKG true. The question is, is there a rule with “what’s the difference?” Which excludes anything non-sega? Hopefully not cause I’d really like to see final fight vs final fight cd.
One thing that wasn't mentioned in this video is if you play Driving Only mode, you'll play an exclusive Act 5 of driving stages where there are 6 stages again, the last being a showdown against the Penguin in his duck. And also, each mode has its own ending, with the platform mode having a good and bad ending depending on whether you beat Catwoman in the special final showdown that takes place during the ending credits. So technically it has 4 endings. I have a full playthrough on my main yt channel featuring all modes, stages and endings. Spencer Nilsen did a phenomenal job on the soundtrack.
But yeah I absolutely love the driving stages, especially the Batmobile ones. They are in my opinion the finest example of combat driving since almost all other games that are considered to be combat driving have the driver shooting out the window with a gun instead of shooting machine gun turrets mounted on the car plus missiles. The only other game that I like as much that's also combat driving is Streets of Sim City on PC with the machine gun turrets you have, the mine dropper underneath your car and other customizations you can get like a hopper that allows the car to jump much like KITT from Knight Rider along with a levitation add-on that lets your car fly/hover like the Back to the Future Part II Delorean. I hate how Maxis/EA did nothing else with that. You could import cities you built in Sim City 2000 and drive through them.
I'm glad you put the price in the video. I'm tired of reviews of games suggesting you buy it but its not cheap, or they say its reasonably priced but their idea of reasonable is not what I would call reasonable.
What I also like is that the PAL version is fully optimized! :D

I honestly think the Special Edition is the THE definitive version of the first game (Even better than the HD remake) but I would love to hear your opinion on it. ^^

Games comparison ideas: Mickey Mania, Ecco 1 and 2, Earthworm Jim vs Earthworm Jim Special Edition, Final Fight vs Final Fight CD, Eternal Champions (though Challenge from the Dark Side was probably a sequel?), Heart of the Alien vs Out of this World, Mortal Kombat, and the many more.

The Batmobile driving levels were way better than the sidescrolling parts and that soundtrack was fantastic
I like it. I wish for the music comparisons it was a slightly longer clip maybe ~5sec per clip, opposed to less than 3 per. It allows for a better feel of the music comparison I feel. I kind of figured the soundtrack would be an improvement. Unless it is excellent chiptune, its typically much easier to make better sound without that limitation.
I still want to see the Console Wars between Crusader of Centy and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. At first glance it seems unfair(comparing anything to link to the past, in some peoples eyes is an impossible task), but I think there is a lot to say about the two.
I want one talking about Mickey Mania for the Genesis and the CD version!
Funny...I'm getting so good at knowing composers based on their tones and instrumentation that I knew it was Spencer Nilsen before I looked it up. He gave a similar rocking OST to Spiderman kingpin on Sega CD.

Did not like the Genesis version but actually enjoyed the Sega CD one. And that soundtrack, especially for the first driving sequence, one of my all time faves.

As a 5 year back 95 I only had batman on sega megadrive I almost beat it back then I still own it

This was that weird late 1992-1993 era where it seemed like Sega was purposely making their Genesis games sound terrible to highlight the “value” of the Sega CD even more. So many games during this 14 month period sounded like trash compared to the ‘89-‘91 Genesis games.
I love the Sega Genesis soundtrack, but I love the Sega CD version because there is the Batmobile.
This was great, I always thought Batman Returns was a fun game on all consoles. Looking forward to more of these and I hope to see you compare genesis and cd versions of Spider-man vs the Kingpin later in the series.

I'm three days late XD So I'm sure someone already pointed this out, but.There are 5 driving levels, and three/four different endings. The 5th driving level is only accessible by playing in Driving Levels Only, and each mode has its own unique ending (which is just a short cinematic with credits, or the fight with Catwoman in Platforming Only mode).
And yeah, I still say the Sega CD version blows away the Super NES version. I want to sit down with you guys and play it!

Oh I forgot to say!! Game Over's in the Genesis version take away all your platforming items/weapons/wonderful toys. In the Sega CD version, getting Game Over leaves you with your weapons so you can finish the game easier.

Huh. I didn't know you could turn the driving stages off. The new music is cool, but the lack of it makes for a worse overall game IMO. It gets repetitive. I'd say the Genesis version wins overall here.

Good vid. Most Sega CD games were better than their Genesis counterparts, except one that comes to mind was Mortal Kombat. The MK Sega CD had terrible load times and didn't enhance anything. Usually though, the CD versions of games were a little better. I agree with you about the music though, sometimes it's a toss up. Ecco The Dolphin had totally different soundtracks and I liked both.
it did add video with the character profiles, but yeah those load times were terrible. especially when you entered a fatality

The continue screen on the Sega Cd is creepy.
I love the sega mega drive in general for his sound so dark, deep so it is not only about better is better but also about taste.
And I had only snes when I was a kid but now I'm a mega drive boy! I don't care about nostalgia after I tried only a couple years ago the mega drive. And he has also the sharpest graphic ever. no even the saturn is so sharp in 16 bit

Mmm, lots of material if you are going with Sega CD and 32X updated ports vs Genesis/Mega Drive. Although the Sega CD/32X ports will always win so you don't need a verdict, just point out the differences. I would also recommend another "series" where you show the differences of PAL, US and Japanese versions of games.
