Thank you for mentioning the Genesis 6 button controller! I am so sick of reviewers ignoring it's existance and criticizing the genesis for its lack of needed buttons
True but some kids could not affort more controllers so back than even in 94 many were stuck with the original 3 button controller. Me and one guy I know in my place both had a SNES with one controller if I wanted to play multiplayer with him I would need to bring my controller at his house.
@@paradoxzee6834 I was stuck with the 3-Button controller back in the 90s, in fact we had TWO 3-button controllers for Genesis. Not only were they rare to find in stores, they cost way too much or were sold out.
@@paradoxzee6834 Nah, if you could afford games, you could afford a 6-button controller. It was essential for some of the later ones. I was a Sega kid and I made sure I got one and can't really understand why anyone wouldn't have wanted to do the same at the time.
99/100 times you are correct guys, but this time you weren’t. As some other people saying in other comments, you didn compare Simba’s roar in sound effects which are better on Genesis and gameplay on Genesis is truly better in many ways. As you said in lot of your videos, gameplay matters the most and Genesis have the better gameplay. So I think this time you were wrong. Keep up the good job you are doing. ✌️
The Genesis version actually has much more precise controls than the SNES version. The SNES version feels slippery but in the Sega version, Simba stops on a dime. It feels much better.
Especially on the hippo tail level (Just Can't Wait To Be King) - the SNES version seems to need much more precise timing than the Genesis version when hopping from tail to tail.
'Tight' vs slippery controls are really hard to describe but you KNOW the difference by feel. I thought almost every 'genesis vs snes' port had way better control on genesis
The SNES version’s samples sound really terrible! I’d rather have the Mega Drive’s FM Synthesis and limited sampling than the SNES’s awfully compressed and rough sound.
Going back and watching some of these old videos, I can't believe you guys still only have 60k subs. I look forward to every one of your videos, even now, absolutely crazy.
Sega controls much better; the hit boxes on SNES are smaller and make swinging from hippo tails much more difficult. I'm amazed you beat that level on the SNES!

Sega should've won gameplay due to these: 1. Simba jumps higher 2. The edges in the Nintendo are only useful in 5 levels (one with young Simba in Elephant Graveyard, and all adult Simba levels), meaning it's nothing compared to the edge that helps in the 10 levels in Sega.
The classic yawn arm around the chick move infused with a burp had me rolling. One of the best episodes yet! I always thought the Sega version had better music and of course, better resolution, but whatever. It's a great game, no matter the platform.
SEGA WINS. The cropped screen in Snes affects the gameplay. Snes wins for the musics? The music on the Canion stage sounds like a symphony of farts in snes; and the sound of the roar in the sega is very better!
There are a lot of farts in the Genesis version's sound effects: - In the first level: when Simba jumps on hedgehogs, lizards and beetles; - In the level "The Elephant Graveyard": when the passage opens, after facing two hyenas at the beginning and end of the level, when elephant bones fall and when Simba rolls and opens a passage; - In the level "Simba's Exile": when the rocks fall. - In the "Hakuna Matata" level: when Simba jumps on frogs and spiders; - On the last level when the lightning strikes.
Circle of Life definitely sounds better on SNES, but most other themes were more lively on the Genesis IMO. Can't wait to be King sounds boring and muddy on the SNES compared to the Genesis which sounds a lot more expressive and goes a pitch higher in the second half just like the original.

Gameplay has a slight edge on Genesis. Apparently there's a jump at the beginning of Hakuna Matata level which is pretty frustrating to pull off on the SNES but on Genesis, they added an animal with a swingable tail to make it more fair. That coupled with being able to see more of the screen makes the Genesis version a less frustrating experience.
I'm kinda surprised the SNES version won. And for the first time (not counting the times when your Next Video Hint would just be "Movies" or "Cartoon" or something that could mean hundreds of things), I'm stumped on what the next video could be
The roar was immediately annoying along with everything being 'cool' having played SEGA first. You're not alone, it was wicked distracting and immediately second level on the ostrich killed the SNES version for me. This is one of the times I think they were wrong in their decision.
I'm actually blown away by that sound on the SNES. It's a bit crackly, but man do they utilize that console's sound chip. I grew up with the Genesis version, so that's all I know.
The SNES version has some of the worst collision detection I've ever seen in a video game. The "I Just Can't Wait To Be King Level" is a prime example.
I still think the Sega wins. The Super Nintendo just doesn't really go for me. Sure the sounds are better but I focus more on the graphics and how smooth the characters look. I honestly think that just because the Super Nintendo has animated letters and cool font, doesn't mean that I appreciate the work put into it. It just means that they added a cool thing to it. Keep in mind this is all my opinion. Thank you.
7:48 Okay...Am I the only one who just hates the stampede level music on SNES?! SEGA's stampede music is WAAAAAAAY better!!! I always thought it sounded a bit flat with SNES. In my opinion, Sega mostly has better music than SNES. Earthworm Jim would also be a great example, just listen to New Junk City. No question.
One cool thing about the SNES version that was cool, graphically, was the lighting affect that comes with the lightning and stuff on some levels. On SEGA the lightning strikes the ground and creates a fire. On SNES it does the same thing, but when it strikes the ground, the rocks nearby light up blue like the lightning - that was cool. I preferred most of the music in SEGA. SNES has closer quality and vocals, and that edges it up on some tracks (like the title theme for sure) - but most of them sound more...deep and just better imo.
This game plays better on sega colors aren’t as good and music isn’t as accurate but the music does sound better. You wanna know why? Sega and Disney has a close relationship so most Disney games were made on the genesis first. Games made on genesis first tend to also play better on genesis. The snes ports always have this slight delay in response for ported sega games.
You know, I think Sega Genesis should have won. The Super Nintendo is higher in quality, yes, but it's missing things the Sega Genesis has in the music. Fast-paced action mood in the Stampede and the pitch shift in Just Can't Wait to Be King. Hakuna Matata sounds more tropical in the Sega Genesis. Best Sound would be a tie.
Finally, a fair video comparison between two consoles and even with detailed explanations. The other video tried to hid one weakness and the comment full of annoying fanboy who keep said their console are better without any strong arguments. Here, the video already told everything. Good job guys, love it so much!
I honestly think the Sega Genesis game has the better soundtrack, because I like the chiptuny sound that it has, and some tracks on SNES just sound wrong to me. I'm not saying the SNES soundtrack is bad, just not as good.
Something I seem to notice quite frequently is that whenever they do these games it's always the Super Nintendo game that crop is there ever a Sega game that's cropped instead of Super Nintendo?
Hehe.. Almost every SNES game has lower resolution than a standard display. So the image is cropped compared to Genesis or stretched to fit the screen. It's a flaw that always existed but nobody talked about back then.
Genesis should have won this round. Better music expect for the opening theme. It plays better, tighter controls (simba can't even reach some key platforms on the Snes) and has higher resolution. The graphics are really close but in more stages the Snes gets the edge. Just another example of the Snes looking better in a screenshot and the Genesis in motion destroying it. Anyone who disagrees play them back to back it should be painfully obvious after.
There are a bunch of bugs in the SNES adult Simba levels that can make them a pain too (in particular the level where you keep falling into the lava - there are invisible walls). I feel like that plus the cropped screen preventing you from even seeing where to jump on giraffe heads in the second level (which is the hardest level by far in the SNES version) really does give Sega a bigger edge. Bottom line, I think it would have been cool to say it was up to the viewer on this one. ;p "Graphics / screen ratio, or music? You guys decide."
+PimpUigi We encountered bugs in both games. We didn't feel it gave one game the edge over the other. The cropped screen didn't really effect our play through. We didn't notice it making one game easier. Let the people decide? We can't do that. It would be chaos. Imagine the consequences. Human sacrifice. Cats and dogs living together. Mass Hysteria!
Great episode, love the skits! I grew up playing this on SNES and never noticed the cropped image. Now i'm going to have to give the Genesis version a try, but the amazing music will be missed.
Sega sound effects when it comes to voice overs is surprisingly very clear. I was watching game play and I was stunned that the voice overs was not distorted like most Sega games
HOW CAN YOU BE SO FUNNY!!! Question mark. I've seen about ten of your videos. Just found out about you the day before yesterday. Will drag it out, the watching of the episodes I mean, since I don't wan't it to end. But seriously, you're the funniest guys I've seen on the tube in quite some frickin' while. I'm gonna tell all my friends about you. From a Sega fanboy.
Have to disagree about the sound. The Snes sounds better in places but those comparisons clearly show inferior music for some of the levels for the Snes. It should be a tie for sound, kind of obvious.
I'd say the Genesis wins on sound also. The title screen on the SNES is obviously better but in all of the other songs, the SNES sounds flat whereas the Genesis' sound has a lot more meat to it.
I'd hope you guys make cub Simba's roar compassion. Because I thought his roar sounded like a cat in the SNES one whiles Sega sounds like a proper roar.
i totally agree with you. sega has an awesome soundtrack. these guys gave nintendo the win because of how it sounds closer to the movie, with the added chanting. but nobody plays videogames for the music in the first place. and sega's graphics and gameplay should have gave sega the obvious win on this. the music does infact sound way better on sega, in the way of being more clear. the snes music may have added volcas, but the sound is in mono. meaning very quiet. sega plays sound in stereo. which is alot louder and clearler. especially if your using a sega genesis model 2, which already has an audio setup for stereo sound, and is the most common genesis model you can find. infact, the genesis version of the lion king was so popular of a game when it game out, that at one point, sega even sold the modal 2 genesis console along with the lion king as a pack-in game.
@@SantiagoMonroy5 the fact that you even like Bubsy enough to bring it up, just ruins my opinion of you, to even remotely take your reply seriously. but fact is, alot of genesis music kicks more @$$ then what super nes games could do. MK1 & 2, Sonic 1,2, 3 & knuckles and Rocket Knight Adventures are just a few examples. snes has the donkey kong country 1 & 2, killer instict 1 and legend of zelda: a link to the past music going for it. but sega has always brought the heavy soundtracks in theyre games. not to mention that there was more violent video games on sega then on nintendo. nintendo ruined that for themselves, being agaist violence back in the early 90's. this always made genesis a console for adults. while nintedo was for goddamn babies. sure nintendo slipped a few violent video games into the mix since mk2. and ended mortal kombat games being on theyre console since umk3ds and mkArmagetton too the switch. meanwhile, nintendo was back making games for players in diapers. sega went to nintendo only after losing the console wars with the dreamcast. but that never changed nintendo from being the pussy video game company that they always were. always aiming towards making kiddy games, and hanging out backwards with lower technogy. took them a few years to make an hd console. the switch is just a freaking tablet. and thats still way low tech compared to any andriod tablet that exists, ps4 and xboxone in graphics power.
@@miltywhitneysmiltank6607 baby games? Nintendo of America can be annoying with it's emphasis on being family friendly, but it still has some excellent games
It sounds more like the movie, but besides "I can't Wait to be King," the samples they used sound awful. Scratchy and muffled IMO. Sega wins sound for me. And besides the resolution (which does affect gameplay at times) I think SNES had a better use of color. But let's be real, they're the same game in the end. Keep up the great work guys. No clue what the next video is based on the clue, but I assume it'll be Christmas themed.
great episode guys! I grew up playing the sega version so I kinda like it more :) I now own it on the snes as well so I'll definitely have to pop it in and give it a try. Awesome job guys!
Awesome job on the video. I own both those versions of The Lion King. I think I will play both versions tonight or sometime this weekend if I have time. Also, I hope you guys had a Happy Thanksgiving.
Yeeeaaaah I love your channel (still)! Believe it or not, I have the Lion King on both of these consoles and have pretty much never played them. That being said, they look pretty fun. I loved the controller switch at the beginning and the corn at the end! Great video guys... you TOTALLY outclassed those chicks. :-p
I actually remember playing the genesis version of this game. I remember freezing the title screen which was funny for some reason but I never finished the lava portion of the level. Also for some reason, the game over music glitched out and sounded like a fly singing once in a while. Weird. Great episode, btw. Can't wait to see more!
You know, I think the SNES colors are closer to a cartoon (which the game is based on) that, and the SNES just has a better color palette to work with, so it's probably closer to what the developers and artists had in mind when they made the game.
The AMIGA had the best animation and speed out of the lot of the versions too at second glance. If it had the demoscene style text of the SNES which is normally an AMIGA trademark which didn't exist in this game and it had all the levels plus all the colours AGA supports as well as the memory it would have one best version for sure over everything it's even a game that goes well for both 1 button and 2 button gameplay.
Only video of yours I've disagreed with. Sega's version has a bigger screen, tighter gameplay and speed, proper raw effect for Simba, better soundtrack. Snes has it beat on soundtrack sound quality and colours but gotta go with Sega overall.
Honestly, I loved the Genesis soundtrack of Lion King considering it's not the usual scratchy Genesis sound chip work but more akin to the Japanese games. The title theme does sound better on the SNES but I thought the rest they were pretty equal. Great video guys, Nothing like a BladeBlur and Console Wars day.
+BladeBlurX That's because the composer was british, not american. European genesis composers were pretty good, the composer for this game is Matt Furniss, he composed tons of great stuff for the console.
Let me tell you why you're wrong (and bad and naughty). Cropped or stretched graphics is objectively bad while the music is only subjectively better on SNES (I actually prefer the Genesis version for certain tracks). Also, the differences in presentation are so negligible that it deserves to be a tie. However, I forgive you because "It's poo" made me laugh. Winner? Me! I get to be right (and stick my fingers in my ears and go "La la la la la" if anyone disagrees with me) and enjoy the video despite you guys arriving at the WRONG conclusion.

Finally, a fair video comparison between two consoles and even with detailed explanations. The other video tried to hid one weakness and the comment full of annoying fanboy who keep said their console are better without any strong arguments. Here, the video already told everything. Good job guys, love it so much!
"In a perfect world, we'd get a game with Sega graphics and Super Nintendo sound."
The DOS version is the one you're looking for then. It has that.

I honestly think the Sega Genesis game has the better soundtrack, because I like the chiptuny sound that it has, and some tracks on SNES just sound wrong to me. I'm not saying the SNES soundtrack is bad, just not as good.
The Lion King Was The Very 1st Movie That my Mom Took me to See in Theaters
Love this channel! So much nostalgia from my youth!
A new episode of Console Wars! Yaay!!
Wait the sega music sounds so much better when it's not a vocal version which is just the opening.
Have to disagree, I prefer the sound on the Genesis, and the graphics are much better on Genesis as well. Genesis version is much better.
@@yeahright5227 Shoo troll! Shoo!
Bottom line, I think it would have been cool to say it was up to the viewer on this one. ;p
"Graphics / screen ratio, or music? You guys decide."
+PimpUigi We encountered bugs in both games. We didn't feel it gave one game the edge over the other. The cropped screen didn't really effect our play through. We didn't notice it making one game easier.
Let the people decide? We can't do that. It would be chaos. Imagine the consequences. Human sacrifice. Cats and dogs living together. Mass Hysteria!
+Console Wars Too bad there was no Super NES Ghostbusters game.
I know. Maybe we'll review the NES game and Sega Master games.
This was awesome! I'd pay to watch more videos like this!
Great episode, love the skits! I grew up playing this on SNES and never noticed the cropped image. Now i'm going to have to give the Genesis version a try, but the amazing music will be missed.
OMFG this was HILARIOUS! The Rafiki stuff had me in tears xD
The corn in the poo was a nice touch. Great Video Guys!
+Mizzah Tee Glad you enjoyed it dude!
It's the circle, the circle of digestion.
It's dignity! I am not as smart as you Kirk. That Simpsons episode where Milhouse's parents marriage falls apart. Classic!
9:38 don't forget how the pitches are in line with the movie on Sega.
I'd say the Genesis wins on sound also. The title screen on the SNES is obviously better but in all of the other songs, the SNES sounds flat whereas the Genesis' sound has a lot more meat to it.
Sega also has RGB capability out of box (with a $20 cable), so when used with a PVM, colors look great with perfect pixels
A birthday video from Console Wars? Epic!
+y2j420 Happy Birthday!
LOL!!!!! "did that happen to you?" "no, it happened to my best friend tho" HAHAHAHAHAHA!
I'd hope you guys make cub Simba's roar compassion.
Because I thought his roar sounded like a cat in the SNES one whiles Sega sounds like a proper roar.
I guess I'm in the small minority that thinks the Sega music is better. I don't really like the super Nintendo music for this game
i totally agree with you. sega has an awesome soundtrack. these guys gave nintendo the win because of how it sounds closer to the movie, with the added chanting. but nobody plays videogames for the music in the first place. and sega's graphics and gameplay should have gave sega the obvious win on this. the music does infact sound way better on sega, in the way of being more clear. the snes music may have added volcas, but the sound is in mono. meaning very quiet. sega plays sound in stereo. which is alot louder and clearler. especially if your using a sega genesis model 2, which already has an audio setup for stereo sound, and is the most common genesis model you can find. infact, the genesis version of the lion king was so popular of a game when it game out, that at one point, sega even sold the modal 2 genesis console along with the lion king as a pack-in game.
As SNES and Sega Genesis fan. The music is better on Sega Genesis. But both play pretty similar 🤷♂️
@@miltywhitneysmiltank6607 "No one plays for the soundtrack"
Ristar, Sonic, Megaman,Castlevania, Mickey mania, Bubsy ahem...
This versus is a classic. Really amazing
3:24 I'm pretty sure that movie lasted longer than 30 seconds
They forgot to mention that the VOices in The Genesis Version sound clearer than the snes version
Speaking of Disney 16-bit videogames, do you plan to do a Console Wars episode on Jungle Book? The SNES and Genesis versions are quite different.
Pretty sure that Rafiki is actually Ren Höek in a very convincing disguise!
+Ⓙⓞⓔ Ⓢⓝⓔⓢ That's kinda who we were going for. Couldn't do a Rafiki impression if our lives depended on it.
Well the sample reason is because they used the MOD Files from the DOS Version and I am pretty sure the conversion process sucked
great episode guys! I grew up playing the sega version so I kinda like it more :) I now own it on the snes as well so I'll definitely have to pop it in and give it a try. Awesome job guys!
+RetroGamingManiac Both game are pretty much the same so you're not missing much.
01:50 how the frak did you manage to both yawn and burp at the same time? That's the smoothest move ever!
Awesome job on the video.
I own both those versions of The Lion King.
I think I will play both versions tonight or sometime this weekend if I have time.
Also, I hope you guys had a Happy Thanksgiving.
+Nicksolo85 Thanks! Hope you had a good Thanksgiving too.
Sega had beautiful music!
+Nintenjoel We're totally classy.
So when playing a game having more of a playing area that gives you more to see and looks better isn't more important than slightly better sound?
Ok?
9:41 yes, the SNES has higher sound quality, but that's what makes it worse than the Sega Genesis. It's less relaxing
The combination of PCM-Sounds and Yamaha FM chip sounds cleaner than the full sampled soundtrack on SNES !
Going on a console wars binge for 6 days starting tomorrow :)
I'll give you the title song on the SNES but the other songs I prefer on the Genesis
Agree. Stampede music is just anoying on SNES with muffled trumpets, on Genesis is much more dynamic and appropriate for the chase.
Only video of yours I've disagreed with. Sega's version has a bigger screen, tighter gameplay and speed, proper raw effect for Simba, better soundtrack. Snes has it beat on soundtrack sound quality and colours but gotta go with Sega overall.
how come neither of you addressed Simbas roar on snes sounds like a kitten meow and Sega's sounds like an actual roar?
Dan and Greg, your channel has kept my dreams alive! I enjoy your videos a whole lot! Keep it up guys!
+BladeBlurX Yeah. Black Friday? More like awesome TH-cam Videos Day!
+BladeBlurX That's because the composer was british, not american. European genesis composers were pretty good, the composer for this game is Matt Furniss, he composed tons of great stuff for the console.
Marcel Weber
Well, not all American composers were bad. TOMMY TALLARICO.
***** Yeah, Tommy Tallarico, John Baker and Howard Drossin are the exceptions. But the rest rank from OK to awful.
wow you know a lot more about that than me lol
Yay! I wanted to see this episode! Mickey Mania is the game I wanna see you 2 play the most.
+bigbangbot Funny you said that having just thought about it.
+bigbangbot Be surprised for their next unboxing......CRAP, I JUST GAVE AWAY SOMETHING!
+bigbangbot
Mickey Mania is awesome on Genesis/Mega Drive
That was an incredibly hard game.
Jim Profit
yea thats true
Let me tell you why you're wrong (and bad and naughty). Cropped or stretched graphics is objectively bad while the music is only subjectively better on SNES (I actually prefer the Genesis version for certain tracks). Also, the differences in presentation are so negligible that it deserves to be a tie. However, I forgive you because "It's poo" made me laugh. Winner? Me! I get to be right (and stick my fingers in my ears and go "La la la la la" if anyone disagrees with me) and enjoy the video despite you guys arriving at the WRONG conclusion.
Another excellent episode guys, nice to see chun li again ;)
You guys should tally up the total console wins at the end of each episode discreetly somewhere on the screen. and that's great you guys met bill burr. bill burr and Nathan barnatt are my two favorite comedians.
+David Steck Yeah, meeting Bill Burr was one of the coolest things ever. After taking a pic with him we went to a nearby bar and he walked in 5 min later. I actually got to have a regular conversation with him.
When they compared the song "To Die For", if someone thinks the snes version sounds better they should see a doctor
console wars : B.O.B snes vs sega genesis !! congratulations on channel :) is very entertaining your videos
+Console Wars Greg and Dan good work I have not been able to think of new content myself as of late also had issues with my PC hopefully I will do another episode of my series or a vlog need something to find first.

LMAO @ The date scene with Wendy and Sam...
Dan: "They said they're going to freshen up, you know what that means?"
Greg: "Pooping?"
Dan: "What? No! Well...Maybe?"
That entire scene leading up to the comparison was non-stop awesomeness!
4:45 "Oh...Sega...And how did you write that? Is that what I think it is?" "Yes! I wrote it with Almond Joy!" - ROFL!!! Wtf?
13:24 "AHHHH!!! Almond Joy!"
"Why is there corn in it?"
"There's a good reason for that! It's pooooooop!" - Hahahaha!!
I always wanted to rent this game back in the day, but I never did. I did end up renting Aladdin, though. I'm going to have to get this game and go through it at some point. Also, this has to be one of my favorite episodes so far! All of your episodes are hilarious, but this one is one of the funniest. Keep up the good work, homies!
You guys are getting really good. I really hope for this to continue. Curious, who write out these scenes?
+Jay Flows Hey thanks. Dan does. He writes the script, films, directs and edits. Oh and he makes the music lol! He was very excited for this opening sequence, I'm kinda excited to do a commentary in the future for this episode lol.
this episode has some of my favorite jokes. the controller mix up. the poo.
Thank you for showing my comment on the end of this video :)
