  • I'm putting this video up because of all the abuse I see on trail these days. What happened? Why is everyone so angry? Or so competitive? What happened to compassion? What happened to kindness?
Pull that shit around me and I'll blast you with a tirade of words.
    End of rant lol.

Nothing gets me riled up more than seeing someone put down someone else. It's not just hiking it's everywhere. Maybe it's more noticable with social media but it kinda reminds me of the mean girls in highschool and that was way back in the 70s! Pissed me off then and it still pisses me off when I see it now. I was always told that silence = concurrance so yes, absolutly speak up!

Good for you. But, as a nine-year thru hiker (in my 30s) and a short tripper in the three decades since, I have faith in the self image of other thru-hikers. NO thru hiker is going to buy into anyone else's competitive criticism. There are a few Rambos, and always will be. But we all know that they are rookies on-trail, and THEY are the ones that have something to grow out of. They always do, at their own pace. I am also glad that they are on the trail becoming more tolerant and mature and loving. I choose to try to be a good example and to me that is being kind and tolerant and forgiving, even of Rambo. They will either get off the trail or outgrow Rambo. They will be humbled and they will learn that their true self is happier than the ego that they used to have. Rambos are always rookies. Of course, I could be wrong. I am not on trail, like you. I am truly shocked and dismayed that young people, now, seem to be intentionally slovenly? Is this just a stage? Do young women now find this attractive? The world is full of mysteries. This is just my opinion. If you feel like biting someone's head off, don't let anything that I say intimidate you. Have fun and BE DANGEROUS!

I agree with everything you said but I see it go the other way too. If you're an UL hiker and you hike big miles those that hike average to low miles think we are not enjoying the trail or somehow, we don't enjoy the trail as much as someone doing low miles. They never understand we are carrying light packs and are in much better condition. I have actually never heard anyone talk to someone like that. I always say hiking is not a competition. Just hike and enjoy yourself. I am old and I have pretty much seen it all. I think because most of my time I hike with my dog I am never part of a tramaly or ever want to be part of that. I am more of a loner on the trail.

Who are they to speak, who's to say this person doesnt have a disability of some sorts and 15 miles is a huge stretch, a big deal and a proud moment for them, until that gets dashed by judgmental bullies....also countless of other reasons for hiking a trail differently; no one should disregard someone's efforts because its "not how it should be done"! They forget their predecessors. When I started backpacking, at age eleven, my pack did not even have a hipbelt! They were just beginning to experiment with a webbing belt to offset the pull of the forehead strap. Try doing the JMT without resupply and a forehead strap. How about the Klondike porters. The RCMPs would not let them proceed unless they got 1000 pounds over the first pass. We learn humility through experience.

I find these type of people who want the bring the "ideology" of the "real world" of comparison into the hiking world very tiresome and boring. And quite frankly i find them to be very weak minded people. At the end of the day this is just walking and everybody can do that, it's not special. If you want to compete go run a Ultra Race and get actually somewhat of a competition and absolutely crushed.
It's really disappointing when you walk through nature/wilderness alone with your thoughts and at the end of the day these people still need other humans for their egos so that they can put them above them. If this is still the first thing that these people think of after hiking and experiencing all this beauty for so long, there really is no help for them and hiking does not fix anything.
Maybe they all hike with music/podcast 100% of the time and don't ever get to experience their thoughts.
It's not enough that they have some mile number that they walked, this mile number alone would mean nothing to them, this mile number must be higher than that of some people so that it becomes meaningful to them.
You see a lot of these people and when you explain to them that the AT is way tougher hike, because it has way more elevation gain per mile, that is also on a surface that demands more energy they shrug it away. There was one hiker who did this all the time on the PCT and who didn't finish the AT because hiking in humidity also makes it harder.
Everybody got their own body at their own time and their reasons to hike slow or fast. You are only hiking against yourself and the elements, not against other Hikers. All this doesn't matter, what matters is what happens in between the miles.

I believe that when you are a purist at heart you don’t agree with people who skip sections, but you still need to respect everyone’s decision on skipping areas even if you don’t agree. The competition it’s plain ridiculous and I completely agree with you; everybody needs to respect others and the way everybody do their hikes even if you don’t agree. Just keep your opinion to yourself, nobody has the right to judge other people’s hike. Period. And this goes mostly to the guys, sorry but it’s true, guys are very competitive and a lot of them hate when they see a woman capable of doing the same thing they do, so they try to put her down. Not fair, not nice. I loved that you took a moment to talk about this 🙌🏻

While I couldn't completely agree that what you say is 100% right, sadly you will have zero effect on those critical bastards. Why? Because what they are revealing with their critical nature, is how completely empty they themselves are, and how they can only feel good at he expense of others. Which is why my response to this crap is to smile very broadly, and note that "I don't care." My feeling of well-being is wholly located in my evaluation of myself, and no amount of criticism is going to change that. Hiker Larry [who, at 83yo, considers 15 miles a banner day 😁]

By ignoring him, he'll be the one triggered, mad, and with the higher blood pressure until he finally realizes you don't suffer fools gladly and find another victim.
