      @Jacob Brown how many karate fighters are there in mma today? And how many jiu jitsu fighters are there? Wonderboy thompson and sage morthcut are the notable users, but bjj? How many??? Despite the fact that GSP trained karate, they dont utilise jabs in karate. GSP only uses point karate to time his TAKEDOWNS which is not even taught in karate. Unless you're talking about kyokushin karate, but then again, the same argument arises, how many karate practitioners are there and how many bjj practitioners are there?

      @@lanemir_sindjelic BJJ is most identified by it's guard. Which focuses primarily around sweeping to a top position.. From where one has the ability to stand up. Most guards have more sweeps than submissions.
      There's options for not using guard to stand up, watch Sakuraba. He simply rolls to turtle and stands. (some consider that a guard too)
      But learning what to do when you are in bottom position for self defense is critical. BJJ is the number one art in that regard.
      In self defense there is no tap out, the opponent either has their limb broken or is choked out. Karate grappling methods (to stand up) lack pressure testing.

      It is apples and oranges. Any wrestling style (which will obviously bring bodies much closer together and introduce a different type of fight) will be more effective and efficient as a one on one style of fighting. Always has been. On the other hand, a huge number of fights end with KO punches or kicks. It is MIXED martial arts so it is necessary to (or better/ smarter to) incorporate both striking and wrestling techniques. That is precisely where UFC and US MMA went as a direction.

    More than Martial art, it's the training methodology that matters. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools have a much higher emphasis on pressure testing and live sparring while most Karate Schools today in the West are watered down to an extent that they barely resemble the intensity of "Old-school" Karate training style. Therefore, you are better off training in a BJJ school than Karate, just because statistically there are not many Karate schools that focus on pressure testing than things like 'kata' which are not very useful in fighting.
    Having trained in both BJJ and Karate, I would say that a skilled grappler has an advantage over a skilled striker since most fights will end up in a grappling scenario. Most strikers in kickboxing or boxing match naturally end up clinching to avoid strikes and therefore a fight is more than likely to end up in a grappling scenario of some sort. You have seen an example of this in the Khabib vs Mcgregor match.

Like who you're fighting since in BJJ, you'll fight different weight classes differently and become sore in different ways. I'm a featherweight, so if I go against someone my size, I'll typically be sore in my upper body since most of the grappling are done fighting for grips. If I go against a bigger practitioner, I'll feel sore in my hips and shins from using my legs more in the rolling session. Generally speaking, though, your hands and feet will get a lot of callouses and scars from grappling (from the gis).

    "bjj often uses strikes to subdue opponents..."
    Uhhhmmmmm...
    Yeah, if you like getting dq'd.
    CJJ allows open hand strikes sometimes and mma uses strikes, with bjj being the most popular move set for mma, and many instructors having some decent mma chops.... but... Strikes? Great way to find yourself on the mats with the instructor showing you what a high belt opponent can do against a boisterous newbie. And 10 minutes later, a boisterous newbie who no longer strikes in bjj...
    Accuracy check anyone?
    5 minutes in a bjj class man. 5 minutes.
    I am in Asia and we have lots of guys in our club who know karate. None of them would even dream about going karate only vs bjj only. Not in a million years.

    • @andyrrafaelthebeastemperor8709
      @andyrrafaelthebeastemperor8709 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DQ? I assume that this isn't a competition, or if it is, would make no sense to allow strikes to the Karateka but not for the Jiujitsuka. Why would a Karateka fight against a Jiujitsuka under Jiu jitsu rules? It makes no sense.
      Yes, bjj practitiones like myself are often taught to use strikes as a way to the takedown and submission. For example: Jab - Cross - Double leg.
      We view them as a means to get close enough or to make the opponent give an opening for a takedown. Or goal is to take the opponent to the ground, our territory, not a knockout.

    • @eschelar
      @eschelar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andyrrafaelthebeastemperor8709 I can understand what you're saying. In a street fight situation, you'd be more along the lines of MMA with Karate as primary skills vs MMA with BJJ as primary skills.
      Personally, I think that's outside of the level of examination proposed.
      Having said that, in MMA, you need look no further than the Gracies, who will typically use a few carefully placed kicks, like the teep-type front kick to the forward leg quad, then shoot for a takedown. No Karateka is going to survive on the ground vs a jiu jitsu practitioner of a similar belt level or even similar experience level in terms of time.
      However, if you were to restrict the BJJ practitioner to BJJ legal moves only, then you wouldn't be allowed to do those strikes. Certainly not Jab, Cross... You'd be DQ'd before your opponent hit the floor. But the teacher might actually teach that sequence for general use. Quite valid.
      I think it's fair to note as well that most people who attend BJJ classes will be exposed to other fight scenarios. Our club, like many others is cross-discipline (BJJ and MMA, with instructors in many of the striking arts) and even in BJJ class, many of the participants attend classes there for BJJ and for MMA. In each position when being taught, there is always a discussion about potential variations for MMA which include defending strikes and attacking with strikes.
      However, for a strict BJJ match, the students are also expected to know that there are some techniques which are not acceptable.
      For me, in a fight, I would prefer always to use grappling techniques and I specifically avoid training with punching because I want to have as little instinct as possible to punch.

For karate we lack any grappling other than the simple joint locks and guillotine that my sensei has introduced through his experience as a bouncer and security officer trainer. I also belive that if you are proficient enough at either size does not matter. If you are proficient at both though they complement each other so well by backing up each style through the others weakness. This is why I plan on continuing learning and potentially teaching both

I always wanted to learn an effective martial art but didn’t know which one was the best for me. I’m not the biggest or strongest person or the most flexible so jujitsu seemed like the perfect fit for me. I started my jujitsu journey in mid July of 2020. I’ve met so many amazing people and learned so much. My self confidence increased greatly. Between then and now I won a gold medal a few months ago at a jujitsu tournament and earned my blue belt last month. I hope I can continue this journey for the rest of my life! Thank you again for kick starting my jujitsu journey!!!

    At 2:58 the background shows Aikido and it’s founder “O Sensei” while talking about karate.

      Nice catch. ... I think the kanji say aikido too? I wonder if this is a stock image they used?
