I am so thankful for this message. It has been a year and a half since my child has spoken to me. BUT I trust the Lord everyday with her. She will come back! Amen and Amen!

The converse is also true. People have praised me for having great kids, but I always say that I taught them the truth; it is the child's responsibility to respond to it.
I was very intentional, and part of me wants to receive praise, but I know I am thankful that they have responded well.

In any relationship, both people do something wrong. Parents must also confess our sin and receive forgiveness.

Many a parent have apologized. A prodigal child can be too stubborn, too arrogant to accept the apology, the opportunity to start over. In many cases parents emotional well-being are being held hostage by their adult child.

I would encourage you to not see him as a "prodigal" any more. The father in that parable was continually looking for, AND EXPECTING his TRANSFORMED son's return. Then REJOICE!!! Really FEEL the wondrous glory and joy of it every time you think of him. REJOICE THAT WHEN YOU ASK IT IS GIVEN UNTO YOU. Underline "IS"! That's an "ALREADY DONE" ACT - FACT.

I went to a service at Church of Christ who preached that it very much is the fault of the parent and especially pointed out nurturing vanity in your child. My mother was convicted in her heart and began to ball uncontrollably. Had this minister spoke on forgiveness and forgiven yourself for being an imperfect parent rather than a perfect parent in a troubled deficient society she would not be having these mental and physiological responses. Mind you, she was 64 when we heard this sermon and I think it was cruel and abusive

I am currently a mother of 4 and I blame myself almost every day for the way my oldest son is behaving. I pray daily for him and for myself. I am so sorry to hear this happened to your mother. I couldn’t imagine my pastor putting the blame on me 😢

That is not a "church of Christ" belief; just a teaching of that particular local preacher. Try another congregation that is more sympathetic.

I’m grateful my prodigal knows the Lord, heard his voice and was called to be save and baptized early.
He’s been away 8yrs, he is intelligent, creative and can be successful at anything.
I was a dismissive avoidant through my trauma. I pray we both heal and become whole and reconnect in love on earth and in heaven in Jesus’s name.
    I pray for us all.
