  • Tearing into my free garden tractor to change from a vertical shaft Kohler V-twin engine to a horizontal shaft Briggs opposed twin. Then I had an idea.

    Hey Gary! Glad to see another video. I wanted to share with you that I used your technique for modifying the exhaust tube on my Roketa Bali scooter. The old muffler rotted off, but the core pipe was still good. I cut slits until I got the tube where I wanted it and then welded it up. It looks absolutely gnarly with rings of weld, but by golly it works! A little BBQ grill paint and I'm rocking a cheap 50 dollar muffler that sells all day long online. The original muffler is no longer available. I love your ingenuity... Back to watching your video...haven't finished yet and when I do, I'll be right back to comment!

    Okay Gary I just finished watching the video. First off all, I'd quit caring about what people say in the comments including this one. The reason I subscribed is you did your own thing and shared it. Many great ideas. As far as this mower goes, what is your vision for it? Do you want another hot rod mower? Do you want an offroader? I personally think another hot rod is cool - it's NOT the same old hot rod because you are showing how to make a hot rod with a different transmission and a different engine. People with these kinds of mowers should be super stoked to see how they can accomplish a hot rod with either style of mower/transmission so they can more readily work with what they have. I love the look of that engine up front where you had it. I like how you solved the offset engine problem. In that part of the video where you showed the problem, I said out loud, "Just flip the plate over Gary." LOL! It would have just put the washers over the frame instead though since the base of the engine is slid over farther than I thought it would need to. You could weld a couple pieces of flat stock on the engine mounting plate, redrill your holes where you want them, and then bolt it all down without needing a washer stack. Regarding the transmission, is it possible to redrill holes and notch the frame so you can drop the frame over the transmission further? Then you could build a little wooden platform over the transmission to mount your seat on if you lower the frame that far. You would need to compensate by putting the front axle brackets on top of the frame or build an extension of the frame out front that goes up so the axle brackets can still be mounted underneath the frame and accomplish the lowering effect. Are you planning on using those tires? Are you going to extend the axle width? If you are attempting an offroad-style hotrod mower, then getting the seat down low will be a must or else you're just gonna feel like you're tipping over all the time or due to you sitting too high you WILL tip over. Establish your vision and work within those confines. I envision this as another hot rod mower with off road capabilities. Rear engine will give you better traction yes, but it completely ruins the cool hotrod theme your channel espouses. It's the same concept, but a different way to build and I think this is really something cool to show. If you rear engine it, then all you did was make a rear engine Snapper mower with larger wheels. Meh...anyone can do that. Wear your hotrod mower theme with pride. Remember: Within any limitation exists infinite variety.

      @LazloNQ Thanks for the tips. A lot of great ideas here. Snapper rear engine riders are lame lol. I do have a vision for the rear engine design, and it wouldn't look like a Snapper. I'm really torn on this decision. Now I just really want to get another GT so I can do both ideas 🙆‍♂️

    Combine the engine and transmission into one unit with the engine horizontally the same height as the tranny. It can then be installed slightly forward of the transmission location now. Total commitment.

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Roger-y4z I thought about that, but there's not really enough room. I would basically have to build a custom chassis at that point. Cool idea for the future, maybe.

    I'd go with rear engine. Wheelie machine would be cool as hell. Be different. It's just one build, there will be many more. I'm literally doing the exact opposite right now, on the same platform (Husqvarna GT2254 - same thing). I moved the engine about a foot forward and mounted the seat on top of the engine. Then added a 17 cu ft electric-actuated Agro-Fab dump bed on the back. Not done yet, but soon. :) By the way, those gas tanks go for $300 on eBay all day long. I just sold mine a few days ago. If you're not gonna use it anyway, might as well sell it.

      @refugeinc.159 That sounds like an awesome build. I've wanted to do something similar. I have drawings I did years ago with a setup like that. I can't believe the gas tank is worth so much. I was planning to keep it for another project, but for $300, it can go, lol. So far, the comments are split, and so am I. I guess we'll see what direction I go in the next video 🚜💨💨💨💨

    Rear engine. Don’t modify the chassis height in the middle, just inset the seat down in there on supports. Put an old hood on there, dropped on height that will cover your legs.

    I've got the same tractor. I'm going to try a Right Angle Drive and replace the belt with a centrifugal clutch and chain. I hope to be able to Join the Output Shaft to the Drive with a Coupler or Weld it. Question, Dose moving the Front axle forward help Handling? Thanks for All your Awesome Videos!

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @SteveM-426 Moving the axle forward for me is really a personal preference. I like the look of the longer wheelbase and just making it overall a larger machine. Although, there are definitely a few benefits to moving the axle forward. The increase in wheelbase makes it a bit more controllable at speed. it also affects weight distribution, making it less likely to do a wheelie when launching or during certain off-road maneuvers like climbing a steep hill. It makes it effectively a larger machine, giving the option to move the engine forward for more leg room. The other thing to consider is what your primary use will be. On my Hot-Rod-Tractor, I mounted the axle solid with no pivot, which makes the steering more responsive and improves stability and handling. Keeping the pivoting setup will be better for off-road use. The longer wheelbase is also better for drifting, powering through a corner, or doing donuts. I was surprised how much angle and speed I could carry while drifting in snow. I'm curious how your setup works with a centrifugal clutch. This transaxle doesn't seem to like shifting without getting a perfect clutch engagement and rev match. With a centrifugal clutch and chain, it may not shift without grinding. Good luck, and thanks for watching 🚜💨💨💨

    If you’re going for another hot rod, it looks like it would be dangerously top heavy and roll over on you. Maybe weld tube steel to the top flange at the front of the frame and move the axle forward even more and get roughly 3” of drop. You can cut the shifter off to a short length and add a shifter in front of you, actuate it with a rotating small diameter pipe and/or rods with bellcranks or some shit. Seat obviously needs to get much lower also.

    Another idea to share. If you want, you could put the engine back where you had it and put a simple pillow block bearing jack shaft somewhere along the frame. Run your belt to the jack shaft outboard of the frame and then another belt inboard to the transmission. You could do a chain and sprocket setup so that you could use the clutch with chain outboard to the jackshaft and then a belt to the rear. Just throwing around ideas for you to chew on. Not a fan of the rear engine idea at all because it just looks goofy to me.

      @LazloNQ I like these ideas a lot. However, I don't want to throw a bunch of money at it if I can help it. I'm still not sure which direction I'm going. I did figure out a way to drop the seat another couple inches over the transmission.

    The motor is high but you weigh more and you will be alot lower 🤷‍♂️ I think you will end up with relatively even weight in the back plus that trans is heavy to. I would lot at rototiller belt tensioner designs for ideas. I don't think the motor will look high after the seat and hood are on.

      @BlainesGarage some great ideas, thanks. The biggest issue is getting that seat low. I don't think I want to lower the chassis much because I like to keep these things fairly universal in their capability for on and off road. I'm pretty certain I know which direction I'm going, but still not 100%
