      Believe me, it was a very depressive place just a few years ago. Everything was falling apart even on a main street, unemployment and people struggling with addictions. I studied at school in a bigger town nearby, where's a plant and a big railway station situated, so all those poor folks from Ladoga had to commute every day by the taxi because there were no jobs, no proper public transportation and no opportunity to buy a car. Only recently new heads of a district started developing projects for tourists in this place with a rich history, so I hope it will finally gain popularity as much as other prominent russian sights.

    Russian distances: “only 120 kms away from St. Petersburg”😊 That’s a lot by normal European standards.
    I’m surprised the region is still called Leningrad
    I’m not sure if it works the same way in Russia but those derelict buildings look like heritage buildings (end of the 19th century judging by the architecture, maybe early 20th?) and the owners have to abide by a lot of rules and regulations, they can’t just renovate them, they have to restore them fully respecting the original facade. Which requires a special project and a lot of money. So their option would be to leave them unrepaired to the point of no return, in which case they could be allowed to demolish them.
    Only speculating based on our legislation.

    Awesome video. I think that the problem is that many people, especially young people, try to move towards big cities, leaving these small villages or towns almost deserted and desolated, searchig new job opportunities. In this case it is such a pity that a little town situated along the shore of a magnificent lake has no services for touristic purposes! Such a pity indeed and it would be a great opportunity for the economy of this town, becoming a nice lake resort. Thank you very much Ksenia and I am very happy you enjoyed this trip. Take care.

    • @minime7375
      @minime7375 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Without people paying local taxes it would be hard for the local administration to maintain and repair the buildings, especially considering many are privately owned. I don’t think it’s a case of “they don’t want to” (in both cases, administration and local people), more like “there’s no money” for it.

    What a lovely small town with charming old buildings! Like you said, Ksenia, if it was maintained and if there was a direct rail connection, it could indeed be a very nice candy attracting tourists. I could travel from Helsinki to have a vacation there. Imagine what you could do to preserve and develop places like this town with the money that is now blown up in the air in Ukraine destroying their homes, history and infrastructure. What a shame.

That was missing in the past and it is unlikely to materialize in the near future (although check again in fiver years and you might see a Chinese restaurant). Very peaceful. My comment is long I am sorry. Yes, l know the same here with some buildings. It’s like they buy enough paint for only the sides of the building that are seen by the public. I know here in Canada 🇨🇦 the churches are poor. So poor that they cannot afford to for example fix the furnace if it breaks in the church that they are using. Some churches downsize and choose to use and maintain just one building. We also have the problems as in your “holiday town” where the city council chooses to declare houses and buildings “historical” and they put up a plaque saying it was like the merchant’s and his name house and year built or a hotel and year built but nobody is able to afford to restore these buildings to the original way they were built. It is too costly. For instance in the city where I live, an elderly woman lived in the family home, a huge Victorian style house, and it sat on a number of acres of prime property with nice trees. She couldn’t afford to maintain it, she couldn’t afford to heat it and it needed to have a lot of repairs. I could see it was very pretty in it’s day. It originally 57:37 was the summer residence of one of the merchants in the port city where I live. Now the “summer residence” has become part of the city. This lady wanted to sell her house and go into a nice retirement home but was told by real estate lady she would have to do some repairs first. When some of the people on city council heard she was going to renovate, or tear down the house and sell the land, they declared her home was a “Heritage House” and all renovations had to meet the original way the house was. Plus, because it was a “Heritage House”, she couldn’t even tear spun the house and sell parcels of land. So she couldn’t afford that, she stayed in her house as long as she could and eventually ended up in hospital and died. The house stayed for sale for over 10 years and went into rot, (no heat) and last year somebody started a fire in it. So that finished that house. Now the acres of land very $$$ worth will be bought up by some developer. I loved the “Coffee Shop” next to the “Laundromat” both run down very similar to many city and towns in North America.

    I hate to admit this, but there are many towns in the US that are as in as bad shape as some of the buildings that you showed us here. A lot of this devastation looks like remnants of WWII, and there wasn't enough money to repair it all. You are right in suggesting that this would be a good resort town. It has a lot to offer with that spectacular lake and history.

  • @missmomus
    @missmomus ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Even with the lack of maintenance, it doesn't look that bad to me. There is some charm to the old architecture here, better than depressing kruschovkas or sterile-looking commie blocks. It looks generally clean and pleasant. There are tons of small towns all over Europe and North America which are equally rundown and past their prime. Young people leave, the ones who stay lack the funds and motivation to keep things up.

    Most of the old buildings look to be from 100/200 years old. SO MUCH has changed in our world since then. Many, many places look like this. It is very expensive to take them down and where do you put the debris, etc?
    Let's hope that soon there will be young minds in all of our old communities who will help us save parts of the old buildings and incorporate these cultural elements into what is new.
    *** Ksenia...You could go there again and focus on the elements in the older buildings that are so interesting and unique, like all that window trim. It seems so culturally Russisn. Some very Old School Russian Carpenter/artists were extremely talented, very highly skilled. We see this level of artistry in old buildings in many parts of the world. Artisans love to incorporate their cultural elements and different styles into their buildings. It is amazing really.
    *Ksenia, you could write a book and use your own photographs. I can see it...

      …..but the people are so different. Russians don’t care a scrap what their military is doing in Ukraine whereas Canadians do

    Russia is a beautiful country. I've always wanted to visit Moscow and St. Petersburg. I just found out I'm part Russian. Living in the USA we are a people who has every European nationality in our DNA. May we all have peace and health.

    Thank you for your video, Ksenia. This small town does not look all that different than many in America. People move away to other areas or cities, and nobody maintains the building. It's left to rot. If a church isn't maintained by the church itself, the government will not give money to repair it. We have a fairly strict separation of church and state. The same for apartment buildings. If a building is historic or important, they may be able to apply for a grant for some money, but largely people have to pay for their own repairs. Sometimes, you can get tax "write-offs" for energy efficient building repairs. Basically, you can deduct a part of the money you spend from your income taxes. I also appreciate you going into local stores and cafes, along with the costs. I think most Americans would get your sarcasm, too!

      Thank you for sharing! In Russia the church and the government are getting more and more integrated now.

    The small town looks like clean and not many people, run downs building I think it's standard normal for small town . Small towns must have rundowns building. Thank you for took us there, food looked delicious.
