Artisans Behind Durga Idols: Potuapara, Kalighat.
Join us on a captivating journey through Kalighat Road, where tradition meets tenacity. On the western side, you'll find countless idol-making masterpieces in progress, their vibrant forms cloaked under plastic sheets. Meanwhile, the eastern side is alive with homes that double as studios, where dedicated artisans breathe life into clay.
Step inside the dimly lit shanties-small workshops overflowing with half-finished Durga idols. Meet an artisan who skillfully creates around 70 idols each year, working in a cramped 250 sq. ft. space that struggles to accommodate even ten of his creations. With heavy rains frequently drenching the idols left outside, these artists face unique challenges as they produce around 900 idols annually in the bustling Kalighat Patuapara.
Learn about the rich history of the Patuas, a community of folk artists who migrated from rural Bengal to the urban landscape of Kalighat, seeking to share their artistry with the countless pilgrims visiting the iconic temple. This vibrant neighborhood became a hub for not only creating art but also engaging in social and cultural activities that bind the community together.
As the market for traditional Kalighat pott paintings ( Pott-chitra পটচিত্র ) dwindled due to the rise of cheaper alternatives, many Patuas adapted to sculpting intricate idols, fueled by the growing demand for these creations, especially during Bengal's grand festivals. Discover how this shift has transformed their livelihoods, making idol production more financially viable.
In the lead-up to Durga Puja, a significant portion of the artisans’ income is generated, highlighting the importance of this festival to both the community and the city of Kolkata.
