What I find really interesting is all the actual military equipment used in star wars. Rebel soldiers' uniforms and kit include gear modeled and even directly taken from Vietnam era field equipment. Many of the blasters you see are also just a combination of a few real firearms. It's really cool I'd say!
Your opening statement highlighted the main reason I love the Star Wars universe. Yes, I'm a military buff, yes I love rich universes to explore, and heck yes, I want to write a book for it.
3:11 I am reminded of how Thrawn said he was concerned about the Rebel fleet’s “threat to our own armada and the Emperor’s plans.” His mention of “the Emperor’s plans” like this in a strategic meeting always struck me as strange. Normally, you would speak of “the Empire’s interests”, or “Imperial policies”, stuff like that.
I always hated the concept of the Army troopers. They were supposed to be more numerous than Stormtrooper yet we never see them aside from a few sparse inclusions in legends comics and what not. Having them in implies that Stormtroopers are the "elite of the elite", which doesn't line up with anything at all seeing how incompetent they have been in all of their portrayals. I can't even imagine anything being even worse than a Stormtrooper. Their design was also really lame and unmemorable. I'm pretty sure their sole purpose was to be low level grunts players could fight in the Star Wars RPG. Additionally, unless you include the AT-ST pilots, these dudes have not shown up once in ANY new canon story sources. You'd think a trooper more numerous than the Stormtroopers would show up at least once in the multiple comics and books published in the new canon. Pablo Hidalgo of Lucas Film Story Group also very heavily implies they are non existent in an episode of Rebels Recon. Q: _Are Stromtroopers considered an elite corp of the Imperial Military. Or are they regular soldiers?_ A: _Oh man what is the best way of answering this that is fully respectful of the awesome 501st legion? It is easy to put on paper that Stormtroopers or the super elite, the best of the best. But when it comes to having to put them on screen they often fill roles where you can't have the best of the best. I mean if you're going to exhibit a soldier in Star Wars, an Imperial Soldier, you're not going to create some sort of generic military guy, you want to use Stormtroopers. So that means you have to have a mix, and that's true in the movies. If you look some of the Stormtroopers are really good. The guys that raided the Tantive IV, at the beginning of A New Hope, those guys are really good, they really made short work of those rebel defenders. Now compare that to some of the guys that are chasing Han Luke, and Liea around aboard the Death Star. So it's not an equal mix. Which goes to the argument that these guys aren't clones. You know because they're definitely anything but uniform._
just because you don't see them does not mean they are not more common. in the Original Trilogy we only get to see a few different areas, most of which are dangerous places. The idea that having a group of Army Troopers makes Stormtroopers "elite of the elite" is simply not the case. the main difference is that the Army Troopers are not supposed to conduct offensive actions or serious combat. They are like MPs or security forces.
army and navy troopers were more featured in legends, now we see them less but they still exist. Most ATATs are operated by Army Troopers and if you read the thrawn novel he worked with many navy troopers. The stormtroopers are like marines essentially over used and probably underfunded
one question about the Imperial military is its basic organization- is there a distinct difference between the Army and Navy? or do they have a unified command
You neglected to add that ISD carries 2 prefab garrison bases, likely used to establish a planetary base and consolidate ground forces. This makes the ISD class even more potent as it can rapidly deploy these bases to gain an fast and strong foothold on wavering/hostile planets.
This is probably the one key advantage which Star Wars has got over Star Trek where the universe cannot seem to catch a break from getting rebooted and mutilated without some sort of manual to keep the studios and writers in check. The Vulcans have got a pretty interesting history leading up to the point to where they became logical in the expanded universe. The best part of Star Trek: Enterprise was when they got the bright idea to actually start using some of it and make it canon.
There's a book at Barnes & Noble called the Imperial Handbook, which explains how the Empire's military is organized - the Army, Navy, and Stormtrooper Corps - as well as comments by some notable characters in the Original Trilogy.
You know, the fostering of a Sith-like mentality throughout the Imperial military and government and how it led to the fall of the Empire just proved how wise Bane was when he introduced the Rule of Two.
Beautiful break down, and I credit you for your understanding at it. So many people just like to claim that the empire was incompetent, failing to understand how it functions.
Look at the generation tech logo on the computer example at 3:21 and to make it better he can put the falcon in between the E and the C if you look at it "from a certain point of view!!!"
One of the main reasons I want a Vader film is so we can see the Empire from their side, I mean Luke was going to join the Imperial Academy at the start of a new hope, so while I will love the bits were Vader takes out army’s of rebels it will be cool to be how they see themselves and how the troops react if or when their told to pacify a whole settlement of civilians.
With the Imperial Military as a whole, something that is often reinforced to the point of incessant repetition, is power projection. Star Destroyers and the Stormtrooper Corps are quite effective in combat (depending if plot armour's involved), but as you said - it's 25,000 Star Destroyers for billions of planets. The Empire is much more effective with its threat than its actual military power, or at least so I think.
One of the biggest reasons the rebels won the war is because the movie made them. Also, that same fact goes with why Ghost squad hasn't been destroyed yet in Star Wars rebels.
Doesn't make sense in Star Wars Realistically, pure-blooded humans would have gone extinct hundreds of thousands of years ago Interbreeding with Aliens along with Gene Editing would have turned Star Wars into the Culture or Xelee Technology should have progressed to the point that the Force is child-like compared to Tech
The problem is that it is that Star Wars Disney IS TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS OLD, PROBABLY MUCH OLDER! (And Legends is much older than Disney Cannon) THERE WOULDN'T BE ANY PURE-BLOOD HUMANS! (Interbreeding would eliminate the human race) Star Wars doesn't have our stupid religions! With all that technology, they don't have poverty or fucking disease to contend with! As Star Trek Sisko once said: "It is easy to be a saint in paradise"
That was awesome from so many angles, all tied in incredibly well from #humanrights in China to military tactics generally, general theory, and how it's done in the Star Wars franchise.
Star wars history say the Empire is evil, yet its the rebels that kill always win, killing thousands of storm troopers in the movies (destroying star destroyers and both death stars) and yet the empire cant hit squat at times. I mean, a storm trooper can never hit the enemy, but when they do, they do nothing to them. Makes me feel bad. I mean, how many storm troopers and main people in the empire dies? More than the rebels.
Realistically, a Meritocratic governmental ruled by Cyborgs and Machines would have existed in Star Wars If Star Wars made sense like the Culture and Xelee
I was just at DHS and did the SW VIP Tour - while there I picked up the Imperial Handbook - its the Empire's version of a real life MTOE used by the US Military- Mission Table of Organization and Elements
Honestly I believe that Jar Jar Binks would be an amazing addition to the United States senate and would be one of the most competent members in recent memory!!!
So now we just need more of these. Like how the Rebellion/new Republic Forces set up and run their Militaries. Or how the Old Republic or Old Sith Empire Or the Separatists did. You could have a new series with something like this
My fleet doctrine would be more focused on advanced fast maneuverable cruisers and frigates and with advanced star fighters while using capital ships as more bulky and carrier support then on firepower
What is the most impressing thing in Star Wars is how Vader and the other sith lords would toss you aside like a half-eaten cold happy meal when their whim dictated so to advance their agenda. No matter what sills you brought didn't really matter. I don't think that even 1000 Imperial death stars being destroyed would have phased Vader or the Emperor, or even given them pause. Vader would just ask his master what was next, while the Emperor would just quietly chuckle to himself.
I would love more videos like these! This was super interesting and keep my attention the whole entire time, which is really rare for me due to my habit of getting distracted super eas... HEY LOOK, A SQUIRREL! But yeah, I would love more videos like these! Thumbs up
I've always wanted to read a story where a galactic sized military has millions of warships, trillions of soldiers, and has scaled strategy up to star cluster size. The canon numbers for the Empire and Republic militaries are one of the few things I despise about the current canon. For comparisons to the 25,000 star destroyers, the US currently has ~90 cruisers and destroyers. So not counting the rest of the US Navy, or even world, the empire has less than 300x the number of mainline combat ships as America; that'd doesn't add up on any level. That being said, there are many things I like about the Star Wars militaries, like the efficiency, actual strategies, and the equipment itself
I think 25,000 is a good number. There are millions of planets in star wars, but only a few that are actually important enough to the Empire to warrant a Star Destroyer. 25,000 is definitely enough to have at least 1 star destroyer at each of their key systems.
The Empire has trillions of soldiers and millions of warships. Its just thatthe most iconic ones (Star Destroyers and Stormtroopers) are quite rare on a galactic scale.
Wh40k is more realistic than Star Wars Their civilizations have REASONS as to why their technology is so backward and slowly upgrading Star Wars doesn't make sense at all
8:05 It's not an Interdictor-class, it's Immobilizer-418-class. Interdictor-class it's a ship used in times of the Old Republic, during battle of the Star Forge, for example.
Thanks for the research. When I was making the Han Solo Chronicles movie with my kids we placed it 13 years after Endor, because the oldest child would be 13. We imagined that the Empire would be run by the Republic, but factions and Admirals would refuse to give up their power over a sectors they ruled or ships they commanded. These factions would still bully Rebels and space scum while trying to attain recourses to keep things going, thus becoming the FIRST ORDER over time.
There are 3 main branches of the Imperial Military. The army, the navy, and the Stormtrooper corp. Each branch has a purpose. The army is for wars, it was mostly fazed out by A New Hope. The navy was the primary branch acting in defense of planets or offensive manouevers. The Stormtrooper corp was the advanced fighting force that was the primary army soon after A New Hope.
I always wanted to see Lucas' original story for Jar Jar in Episode 2 and 3. He still is the one who convinces the senate (by influence of Palpatine) to grant Palpatine emergy powers, and help him rise to power. But I want have liked to see the entirety of it. But because 'everybody' hated Jar Jar so much he left it to this little scene.
Nice video, your usage of strategic, operational and tactical dimensions is a welcome change from most videos I have watched on the subject matter; however, you are a bit off in how you employed them. Recommend that you read select works by Milan Vego (US Naval War College Professor) to refine your thesis. Still a great video.
