    As someone who always struggles with water control, this was such a big help! I got a question, does the type of paper (e.g. cold/hot press) make a difference at all?

    • @Pointebrush
      @Pointebrush  ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Happy it was helpful! To answer your question, YES the type of paper does make a difference. Cold press paper tends to be much more forgiving for water control because it stays moist for longer therefore allowing the pigments to settle. Hot press is flat, smooth and faster drying which makes it more more challenging. This is why a lot of people hate it but in my opinion, it's a very misunderstood paper. Both are wonderful in their own way. You just have to be more skilled with hot press. It won't let you get away with sloppiness which makes it an excellent paper to practice your water control on 😉

      @@Pointebrush That's good to know! I love using hot press, the faster drying time is invaluable to an impatient creature like me haha

    *Most important point that cannot be stressed enough*: let your paper dry. After two years of progressing fairly well, my impulsive nature still compels me to begin tinkering before the paper is completely dry. It HAS forced me to become quite good at repairs. A dab hand, you might say. Patience is the key.

    Gosh, this is such a fundamental NO DUH makes-sense explanation, I am so glad I just subscribed to your channel last week. I cannot tell you how many watercolor classes I've taken and YT videos I've watched over the years and finally gave up on watercolor painting, as I could never control the medium. Not once did I ever hear anyone offer these "why it acts that way" explanations, else maybe I'd have had a completely different experience. What a great teacher you are, I look forward to watching your channel as I try getting back into art-making this year! Thanks for the "why it works," now I kinda get it. DUH.

    Hullo Margot, I saw your poll but did not weigh in as I was going to watch no matter what picture you used for the thumbnail. I am just not good at those choices either. I do enjoy watching others teaching simple techniques that are not easy to complete! I felt that you did a wonderful job getting this concept across to your viewers.
    Watercolor is the most difficult medium simply because of the planning that must be done to eliminate surprises! Planning out a painting is hard! Most people just don’t want to do it. This is another reason why masking fluid is so hard to use, it MUST BE planned out before you even start! You can make surprises work for you in your painting or you can throw your hands up in despair. Thank you for sharing your time and effort with us and explaining water flow in an easy to understand way. Have a lovely day!

    Interesting tools. I have honestly never thought about moving that drop of paint in one direction. I might be doing it anyway without thinking about it but whether I have been doing it before now or not I will make a conscious effort to do it that way. I already wait for the first layer to dry completely before adding another but I am surprised to see so many people just add another wet layer on top of a still wet layer. Good point for those who don’t do this. I enjoy watching your videos. I learn something most every time. Plus I like seeing your work. Very well done.

    Once again you have explained a concept in a way it makes sense. I watch A LOT of videos and no one has really explained it like that and related how to trouble shoot these weird water stains that mysterily appear. I recently bought hot press to try my hand at some florals,( I heard that it is a good paper for florals). I practiced on a page and was so suprised at how quickly it dried and got these weird hard lines. I'm going too keep at it, onward!
