Ko Ko Bop is such a good song mixing reggae and pop with some electric sounds... love the vibe of the music and the look of the video with all the cuts and inserted little bits and pieces. And their voices are once again awesome!

The only thing you can really expect from EXO is the unexpected - and brilliant performances. One of the wonderful things about experiencing their comebacks is the anticipation as you never know what you're going to get, only that it will be good.
To understand the story in EXO's "Ko Ko Bop" MV, you have to connect the story in "Ko Ko Bop" to the story in their "Lucky One" MV. "Ko Ko Bop" may look trippy and crazy, but if you understand EXO's storyline you will see that everything was done for a specific reason.
There are 8 members in "Ko Ko Bop." This MV came out in 2017 and it was the first MV where Lay was unable to participate because of the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government at the time.
I can see how people might think that Ko Ko Bop is a drug they are all taking and that is why they are acting like they are high and kind of in a loopy drugged-like state. But to really understand what is happening in "Ko Ko Bop," you have to know what was happening in their "Lucky One" MV. In "Lucky One" EXO has been captured by the Red Force who is doing experiments on EXO to try and figure out what makes them special, and to find a way to prevent them from finding and protecting the Tree of Life, etc. The members all use their powers to escape from the government facility and this is where theories say that the story in "Ko Ko Bop" picks up right after they have escaped in "Lucky One".
The blue Ko Ko Bop drink (i.e. BLUE liquid, not green) that Suho mixes and the members drink -- which I now think is connected to the blue drink we see Kai drinking in their "Don't Fight the Feeling" MV and the blue drink that we see everyone drinking in their new "Cream Soda" MV -- and the pills or wafers you see them eating, was originally thought to be an elixir that is helping the members to detox from the drugs the Red Force gave them when they were being held against their will in the "Lucky One" MV.
Remember, blue represents EXO and red represents the Red Force. When you see red and blue lights flashing in the same scene that's usually thought to represent a moment when EXO and the Red Force are in conflict or they are fighting with each other, etc. So that's why we think the BLUE drink is something good that is meant to help the EXO members.
According to SM the story in "Ko Ko Bop" also shows the members soon after they have arrived on Earth and they are all experimenting with their powers.
That is why in "Ko Ko Bop" you see Kai with the power of teleportation using his power to levitate and you see him do the "treadmill" move next to the car. Suho, with the power to control water, jumps into the water and disappears, and later appears inside the washing machine, etc. Xiumin has the power of snow/ice/frost, so he is using his power to create a cloud to fill the glass. Sehun uses his power to control wind to make objects float in the air. D.O. accidentally uses his power of strength/force and splits open the ground when he falls down. You see Chen with the power of thunder/lightning/electricity playing with his power. Baekhyun uses his power of light as he throws the ball in the air and creates that huge flash of light, and Chanyeol uses his power of fire to create the fireworks when he bounces the ball into the sky. The car also looks like it's driving by itself because they are using their powers to control the car, etc.
Their unbridled use of their powers and the haphazard way they play with their environment around them can be explained by the fact that they were drugged in "Lucky One" and while they are still dealing with the drugs in their system, in "Ko Ko Bop" their inhibitions are lowered and they use their powers without caution.
Those tattoos you can see are fake, but like everything SM does, they aren't just random tattoos, they are specific images and messages as part of EXO's storyline.
So part of their story goes: The members were trapped in the maze by the Red Force in their "Overdose" MV and while they were trapped, they were captured and moved to the lab in "Lucky One" and after escaping in "Lucky One" we see them detoxing in "Ko Ko Bop."
However, since then, we now have more information after EXO's "Obsession" MV part of the story was released. In "Obsession" we have discovered that the Red Force has created X-EXO clones. So, some theories now think that instead of "Ko Ko Bop" being about the EXO members, it might be showing us X-EXO. In "Obsession," the members in the bright colors with the crazy hair and makeup were the X-EXO clones and the members in the all-black outfits were EXO. So now some theories think that maybe because "Ko Ko Bop" is so colorful, that it is showing us X-EXO right after they were brought to life, and this is their first time out in the world. So, X-EXO are playing with their powers and trying to figure out how they work, and they are getting acclimated to their environment, etc.
But, as you can see, to make it even more difficult to follow the story, nothing is in chronological order. As fans we have to become detectives and analyze everything that EXO does in order to try and figure out where each piece fits within the larger storyline. Although, at this point, it's only theories and educated guesses. With every new release from EXO it adds another piece to their story. Sometimes that new piece helps to confirm what we thought was happening and other times it turns everything on its head and we realize that what we thought was happening wasn't even close. We can only hope that someday SM will finally explain everything, so we will know whether what we have been thinking all along is correct.
Good insights. I’ve always interpreted Ko Ko bop as them detoxing and not always using their powers carefully. But I like the X-EXO theory, too.

Exo has one of the most versatile biographies I have ever heard, they surprise you with each album, the productions are amazing, musically they go through all genres and you always find some gems of songs.
They sure do
EXO- never scared of experimenting new sounds and genre. You'll never get bored with their music. And it remains iconic even it is a decade or so years old song. Unlike other music that it's only popular when it's released and forgotten later.
This song creates a phenomenon. Fans buy Hawaiian shirts to wear all over the house throughout the city, including concerts in Thailand.❤

Everyone rocked the Kokobop dance challenge which was the very first dance challenge way before ticktok and everything. 2017 was something else
Let's talk about flexibility and innovation... Monster then Lotto then Kokobop then Power then Universe, just speaking about some title tracks, none of them sound the same as the others, THAT'S EXO; it's one of the many reasons why you can't get bored of listening to EXO's music. They are not afraid to take risks and when they make a decision they put all their effort and talent so that the result is something very well done.
PD: Kokobop's ending choreo was the first one which inspired a challenge (dancing) in sns, something very common currently when an kpop artist release an album; it was so viral!

Naw. I’ve never been tired of it. There are about 10% of their songs that I don’t care to hear, but the other 90% can repeat and repeat all day. I usually watch reactions on the same song about 15 times in a row.

It was just a fancam, back in the day when a girl just shouted: "I'm so sick of this song" and then she started to shout even louder "Shimi, Shimi, ko ko bop". I was kind of like a joke among EXO-Ls because EXO performed KO KO BOP so much. It was magical ♡♡♡

Fun fact: if I remember correctly, Baekhyun Chen and Chanyeol collaborated on writing the lyrics for this song. Chen and Chanyeol also wrote the lyrics for Exo's song Promise (lyrics by Chen, rap lyrics by Chanyeol) with Lay helping write the lyrics for the Chinese version of Promise. [Correction: Lay composed and wrote Promise and ChanChen helped write the Korean lyrics.] Chen also wrote lyrics for the following Exo songs: Touch It (funky upbeat song), She's Dreaming (mellow dreamy song), and Lights Out (powerful ballad). He had a solo concert stage for Lights Out which was just magical. Anyway!!! Here to drop my usual request for some Chen solo reactions :) specifically his music from his latest solo release, the Japanese album Polaris: "Light of my Life" (mv), "Mirage of Flower" (lyrics vid), and "Free World" (lyrics vid) to start with! I really think you will enjoy these songs and I would love to hear your thoughts and commentary on their production and arrangement, and of course on Chen's vocals (cuz it's a whole different vibe when he gets a whole song to himself in which to flex his range and dynamics 🎤✨🎸🤘)
