Ask 13: Stairway in the Woods

- SWANNANOA, N.C. -- A person driving Interstate 40 in east Asheville spotted something that piqued her interest -- a mysterious stairway in the woods.
The stairs are off the southern side of I-40. Our crew got to them by taking Azalea Road then going through a tunnel under the highway.
That tunnel leads to a gated service entrance to the Camp Cedar Cliff Day Camp in the cove.
So what are they?
"Those steps are part of a parkway trail system that's now part of the Mountains to Sea trail system," Parkway PIO Lessa Brandon said. "How far does the trail system run? The Mountains to Sea trail system runs statewide from the Smokies all the way to Jockey's Ridge in the eastern part of the state. About 200 miles of the Mountains to Sea trail run parallel or on top of existing parkway trails."
The Mountains to Sea Trail is part of the state parks system. After you come off the stairs, you can continue on the MTS across Azalea Road and over a fence.
Here, the trail runs adjacent to the parkway. The entire trail is still not complete.
Right now, 600 miles of the 1,000 planned for the route are open to the public.

Its part of an internet mystery about random stairs in forests. Some say they are cursed and that if you walk up they are trapped and you could lose a limb. I know its kind of dumb but as internet mystery's go its not a bad one.

the specific stairs that they did a story on is a poor example of the actual phenomena that people have experienced...
the stairways that poeple are talking about are the kind of stairs one would see leading to the 2nd floor of a building or a high up platform...with no structure around it to indicate its original purpose.

The stairs they're showing is just regular stairs when you're out for a walk. Pretty sure everyone came here for the creepy stairs that Corpse Husband talks about..
that's the thing though from the story, they are normal stairs, but what's odd and creepy is them being in the middle of the woods and perfectly clean

I just now watched a vid from a channel called Wendigoon it is a video also based from that thread, it goes for just over half an hour, it is soley on the stairs. Really worth a listen I thought. Is anyone else curious as to why the tunnel takes you directly to the "Service Entrance" at Camp cedar Clif Day Camp. It's a boys camp. Pedo much? I know that you’re here to see if this video is about the random stairs that people have found in the woods, you know, the ones that look like they’ve been cut out of a building? Well, this video doesn’t explain sht about those stairs, it’s just about a wooden staircase that leads to a nature/forest trail. Irl, if you ever come across a random staircase in the middle of no where that leads to nothing, don’t touch, climb or go near it.. we don’t know what they are. Stay safe ^^ and Happy New Year!
This is nothing like the stairs I saw. I went hiking in Cumberland falls Kentucky and I looked up into the woods and there was a brand new, clean staircase in the middle of bumfuck no where. They didn't even go anywhere. It looked like someone had copied a picture of a staircase in a house, and then pasted it in a picture of the woods. I asked the guide if I could get a picture standing on the stairs, and he screamed NO!! I just ignored it from then on.
That was the NoSleep story on Reddit. Never touch them or go near them or else horrible things will happen
I find it interesting that they pick the easiest one to find that's not very hidden and simple to explain.

Are these not steps? I always thought that stairs referred to freestanding structures that it is possible to stand underneath. Hence 'Stepped Pyramids' and the famous agricultural steps of the Incas (also known as terraced farming.)

This is my local station in NC, and I’ve seen the stairs on occasion in pisgah forest up by candler and the rock quarry. I’ve seen the stairs, they beckoned me, but I had the guts to walk away. When I did, a deer with glowing yellow eyes appeared from nowhere and stared me down. Ever since then, I’ve been seeing the deer occasionally in fields or in my backyard. I don’t fear the deer though

I live 2 hours west of Asheville deep in the Nantahala National Forest, and I have been all of the woods out here and have yet to find any of the “stairs” people talk about in these horror videos.
Here because of SAR stories! I have been scrummaging these stories out of curiosity because something piqued my interest in not accepting them as fabricated creepypastas but genuine tales. They're spotted all around the world. You may find them in a thicket of foliage and are never to go near or touch them.

Those look like they belong there. The staircases that have me perplexed look almost new. Like someone is building a house but stopped at the stairs and never came back. Some of them even have fresh carpeting that's impossibly clean for being in such a remote location. Those are the ones I have been digging around the internet for.
When I was visiting family, i saw a set of these with my brother and it lead nowhere. I was curious and I went behind them. I felt some weird feeling of fear and anger and ran away. Me and my brother asked my parents but they didn't know. I don't go in the woods anymore.
Here in 2020, and the stairs in the woods are tearing apart reality. Who would have thought

Nothing wrong with the stairs. The creepy thing that they are not mentioning is that people go missing and reappear years late or they just never appear. I find the pointless small stairs to be creepy. It's not just here it's an international phenomena.
These stairs seem to make sense and they are probably part of an old trail.

There is a park in my hometown called Pioneer Park that has a massive staircase going down and away from the park they are made of cement and stone covered in moss as well they lead to downtown and are really neat. I know it’s not stairs in the woods but I wonder who made them?

I've been in forests on my bike in the middle of no where I've never seen stairs
So basically a nosleep story made everyone lose their minds, the news people are milking it for all it’s worth, the park ranger is 100% on the quit your bullshit express.
I found people living inside these stairs, every single one has a living quarter. Sometimes you have to find a nearby hatch to get in, other times thete id a hatch under the stairs. I've never net anyone in the stairs, but I've had a close call and if I'm going to be honest that was no man

@@doanmai9320 Everyone is just repeating what they read from one story on reddit, and they took the story as fact when it was just made up to spook people. Are there stairs in the woods? Sure. You can find pictures of them, and you'll clearly see that there used to be a building there, but it's been demolished except for the steps. There are also steps that go up in trees to a hunter's tree stand. They're only dangerous if you fall off of them while exploring. Otherwise, there's nothing strange about them at all.
I live in Seattle and stairways just like this built into the trails in the woods are not at all uncommon. I was expecting some unusual looking stairs. It was clearly a slow news day.

This is funny , I just learned about these so called stairs to nowhere an hour ago .When I was a kid in the 80's I got lost in the woods by my house while hunting .I trampled around for half an hour then I seen a staircase all by itself in the middle of the woods. Didn't even bother to care I just wanted to find my way out of the woods .

These are actually a normal thing if you go deep into the woods you will most likely find them. Search and rescue officer don’t like to talk about it and they tell people to not climb them or get near them EVER.

That's a pretty "normal" looking set of stairs as in they're made of wooden planks that are covered in dirt and stuff and they actually lead to a trail up top. Pretty sure most people commenting here are more so thinking about the ones covered in the paranormal search and rescue stories where they look like stairs that you just took out of a house and placed in the middle of nowhere, still having carpets or fancy railings with no trace of dirt or signs of anything ever having climbed them and at the very top it's just nothing else there.
Almost as if they deliberately took a random bridge, instead the ones everyone is here for (I'm a search and rescue and so)
