This song always destroyed me. Even when I was a lot younger hearing it, I could put myself in his place. He's dying in the layby, she's at home waiting for him, there's been an argument and he won't get home. Jesus man its tragic. She waits for me, we'll grow old together. Unbelievable writing, tares your heart apart.
This is still the saddest and most beautiful song I've ever heard. It's actually too effective at what it aims to do, because I can't listen to it too often otherwise I just get too depressed. Will always come back to it though, porcupine tree have always been criminally underrated. Saw Steven Wilson perform this live a few years ago, unreal experience.
1:16 is where chills just rip through my body. The lyrics “I’ve got this feeling inside me, don’t feel too good” with the instrumentation and melody picking up.....God damn it’s just too powerful.
The sorrow hits me hard at 2:12 even though I have no experience of my own to draw a parallel to this song. The feeling of dying with regrets, even though I don't fear dying with regrets. This song is pure divinity.
I pull off the road East of Baldock and Ashford Feeling for my cell In the light from the dashboard Hissing from the road Smell of rain in the air con Maybe check the news Or just put a tape on Lighting up a smoke I've got this feeling inside me Don't feel too good If I closed my eyes And fell asleep in this lay by Would it all subside? The fever pushing the day by Motor window wind I could do with some fresh air Can't breathe too well I guess I should go now She's waiting to make up To tell me she's sorry And how much she missed me I guess I'm just burnt out I really should slow down I'm perfectly fine but I just need to lie down We'll grow old together

The song is about a guy who has had a fight with his wife. He then storms off in his car to cool off. At some point he pulls off the road. He lights up a smoke and doesn't feel good. After a little while he decides it's time to go home he just needs to lie down. He reflects on his relationship and has a very optmistic view on this. He wants to grow old with his wife and he's confident they'll figure out their disagreements. He then has a heartattack in the layby and he dies before he gets to see her again - meaning that a terrible fight was the very last interaction the two of them ever had. In Steven Wilson's owm words this is a song about regret. I love this song. Musically it may be the saddest and the most beautiful song I have ever heard.
I just rewatched parts of an interview with Steven Wilson where he talks about the song (among many other things). My description wasn't entirely accurate. Always liked the "ee-aw-ee-aw" approximation of an ambulance siren. Great storytelling and a reminder *never* to leave home on an argument.

This, and Celtic Frost's "Obscured" are possibly the two saddest and essential songs to perfectly embrace the human condition we all share.
This is the most amazing song I ever heard. I come back to it time to time and it still amazes me like it is the first time. Just flawless.
