- The Happy Camper's Spring speaking tour is on hold due to the Corona Virus. He has a new (updated - 3rd edition) of his best selling A Paddler's Guide to Algonquin) So...he decided to record it for everyone to enjoy in the comfort of their own homes while in "isolation." Thank you for sharing this video series. I have been on 1 canoe trip through Algonquin Park (Live in Essex County, so it is a big trip to get there) and I went on the Welcome Louisa-loop. Amazing trip, amazing view on Harry's and into Louisa. When I went through Welcome, the forest looked like it was recently flattened in a wind storm though.
This presentation was absolutely wonderful! Kept my attention straight through 👍👍👍👍

That Kidney shaped island site in White Trout is really good! I stayed there last year and i think its my favourite in the park so far.

Amazing. What a cheer-me-up ! That was a lot of fun to watch, and very informative. My canoe buddy and I can make great use of the information for planning our next trip to Algonquin. I will definitely be ordering the book.
Great idea
Total agreement about your warning regarding avoiding the Tim River at low water. In 2016, I did a trip with a buddy who had never been in the backcountry during a dry spell.
After the portage from Tim Lake, we had to contend with a wide expanse of canoe-grating (barely) submerged rock shelf, thickly populated by leeches before going on our way. On the 11th beaver dam of the day, he asked" What's the most beaver dams you've seen in one day's trip?"
When I replied: "This is it," he accused me of fibbing, so as not to turn him off of canoe-tripping.
In his defence, that wasn't it. By the end of the day, there were 14.
Don't let this story discourage people from trying the Tim, though. The day after we left, a torrential thunderstorm blew through the area. Chris Prouse and her girlfriend (now wife) did the same route two weeks later and, in their TH-cam video, they mention that they only had two moderate dams and a paddle-over. The rock shelf was safely underwater, and the current had dragged all the leeches off to someplace less irritating. It convinced me to give the Tim another try the next year, and I've been back many times since - as long as there's been moderately moist weather.
PS: Your buddy's cracker-jack impression of you at 57:50 is the perfect caricature! Mockery of that caliber is the sign of a true friendship. XD
Glad you survived the Tim in low water. It becomes a totally different river. LOL
@@TheHappyCamper It really does! Since that first trip, though, it's come to be one of my favourite regions of the park. Always great wildlife viewing, amazing swimming locations - love it!

I'm waiting for my copy of paddler's guide to come in the mail. I went on an eight day trip when i was 18. Now I am 61 and living in Hawaii. I am planning a trip for Sept 21. My kids say "you're too old." Of course that makes me more determined than ever. Love this new video. Stay healthy.

I just bought a park map and was planning a trip on the first weekend in April until the "Kung flu" changed the world! Anyway this was a fantastic presentation and video! Very well done! Yes. It's nice. Check MYCCR.com for info. I paddled the entire stretch but from Mud Lake to Crotch Lake is the best part. I'll look up my trip notes.

Hey KC love the channel and your insight. I am heading into North Tea in a few days. Big lake any advice where I should start to land a few trout! Brookies or lakers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
North Tea is more of a Lake Trout Lake. I've got good luck trolling the southern shore and between the islands. I'm not sure if they've gone down deep yet - but I'd bring lead core line/rod/reel or some form of bottom bouncers. Try Bigger Lake for brook trout, and the rapids flowing in and out of it. EGB lures works well.
Only getting into tripping with my canoe but I have done lots of backcountry camping by foot on the trails in Algonquin. I bought your book a week ago and love it Kevin. What I find a little confusing with planning an Algonquin canoe trip is booking it is very different from the hiking trails. You plan the distance you can hike each day and book specific sites and that is where you got to get to. With canoe trips it appears you book any site on a lake but what I find confusing is what do you do if you are wind bound one day or if you can make it further or can't make it as far as you first thought? What do you do in those situations Kevin? Are the bookings more of a suggestion for canoe sites? You also mention stop off to get your permit a few times. Is it different from the book and video now and you no longer need to do this since you book it all online and just go. I know these are basic questions but no one seems to talk about this part I can find.
Good questions. Some parks have you book specific sites and some have you book lakes. But you still have to get to your destination - unless there is an emergency. Then I would camp anywhere and deal with the consequences. But yes, generally you have to make it work out in your trip planning on making it to your planned destination to camp, which is not always easy due to things like wind and weather. And most people book their permits on line but they still pick them up at the park gate before heading out. But some parks, like Kawartha Highlands, there is no park gate. You just print out the permit to show on your car dash and on person if asked by a warden.
you mentioned bugs on the nipissing ... is that also a factor on the Tim/Upper Nipissing loop that you describe @48:00 ???

Great! I have the paddlers map, been plotting and easy one this year since it'll be my first portaging. Love just going up and stay on the lake I start on, however, I want to challenge myself a little more. Maybe get my brother to join with me, should be great IF the parks open up by then....*sad face emoji* *sad face emoji*... O.o

There's a lot - but Hogan there's a great island site that faces the large cliff to the east) is amazing, and so is Lake Lavieille (campsite on large island along the eastern shore)
