While the search for missing episodes should continue (I wonder if Singapore has been considered as a potential source of missing episodes?), I suspect that few (if any) additional missing episodes will turn up in the near future. That's why there should be a greater focus on creating animated replacements of missing episodes. Saying all that, Phil Morris has talked about some missing episodes being in the hands of collectors. So perhaps crowdfunding their purchase should be another step...
On another video I saw a comment suggesting that a particular collector would want a million pounds for the return of an episode or two he's in possession of. No idea of course if there's the slightest truth to that, but if it was the case, then it should be resisted. Much though it would be great to recover missing episodes, there's no way (particularly in the current climate) that such a vast sum should be handed over for them.
Firstly, I just want to say (probably because I'm a sucker or something) that I actually think this might be real for multiple possible reasons. 1: The episodes are almost completely random and don't complete a single story. Usually with "leaks"/rumors people talk about whole stories being recoverd or specifically highly desired stories, like Marco Polo, Evil of the Daleks, or Tenth Planet 4. Not random stories people either dont remember (Smugglers) or don't like (Space Pirates). 2: The reports of Animation for The Smugglers (and technically Underwater Menace as well) add more credibility to the leak. Since I thought that the Smugglers was an extremely odd choice for animation when those reports came out. I mean, why animate a pure historical (no aliens) with the 1st Doctor (who is less popular than the 2nd) that virtually no one except the most hardcore fans know exists, and is generally considered one if the weaker Hartnell stories? Especially when stories like The Wheel in Space, The Celestial Toymaker, or The Savages would all be better choices (either for actually being known by nore people, having an iconic villain, or being easy to animate, and/or filling in a massive plot point, like a companion departure) Unless of course you picked The Smugglers specifically to fill in just the missing episodes for a physical release. 3: Apple TV has alaso apparently leaked Doctor Who related stuff before, by having an image of Jodie's regeneration on their site before Power of the Doctor aired. So if this is true it would not be the first Doctor Who thing Apple TV has leaked. 4: Supposedly there are around 6-9 episodes known to be in private collections via Paul Vanesis and Phillip Morris. Its possible that these episodes here are all or part of them, explaining why the selection is so random. 5: This last point is more so my speculation, but I'll tell ypu anyways. That being, that I think it makes sense that a lot of these episodes have been recovered (if they have) not all at once, but over time, and were simply being held off till the 60th anniversary. Think about it, would you announce that you found parts 2 and 4 of the smugglers of all stories during a time in which a lot of fans are leaving the franchise due to disinterest. Or do you hold back till the anniversary, a tume when not only will those previously disinterested fans be more interested. But a large focus is also placed on bringing in new fans. Comparing the interest in the finding of UM pt2 and G4 pt3 to Enemy of the World and Web of Fear makes a huge difference. Not only was there WAY more interest and excitement behind the latter recovery, but it ultimately led to Web of Fear being one of the best selling Doctpr Who DVDs of all time. So it is possible that the BBC has intentionally waited till now, making us think that they haven't recoved anything all these years, just to capitalize off of us during the 60th anniversary in an attempt to recreate the success of The Enemy of the World and Web of Fear recovery. Also: I have been researching the "discrepancies" on Apple TV and I need to know if it is listing episodes 1-3 of Faceless ones as only on iTunes, while 4-6 are on Britbox and iTunes. This is odd to me and I don't know if it is listing it like this because I'm in America, or if it is the same across the world. The Faceless Ones animation doesn't appear to be on US Britbox currently. Which would make the listing of these episodes slightly suspicious, but only if the two sites are only referring to the US availability (probably nothing at all, at most its just them preparing to tadd the animation, but I can dream of a nearly complete Faceless Ones anyway).
I for some reason know for certain that somewhere, Multiple buggers has every single one of these missing episodes, Perhaps apart from one singular one.
Some more reliable sources have also indicated that digital backups/scans exist for many of the ones in private collections. Take it with a grain of salt of course, but there's some hope there.
If im honest (and you may call me silly for this), I believe this. There's a lot that is coincidental about this; first, thr Daily Mirror posted an article a month ago stating that 9 have turned up from multiple sources - 4 from Phil Morris, others from film collectors who have died. Also, adding these 8 plus Galaxy 4 E04, makes 9. This news of synopsis came AFTER the article, and the journalist of the article has leaked many true DW news stories in the past 5 years. Yet again, time will tell.
While I always take news of potential episode recoveries with a huge grain of salt, the 60th anniversary would be a good year to release anything that has been recovered in recent years. I can see them holding onto these episodes for a while with the hopes of being able to recover more of the stories. Or they finally negotiated a deal with some private collectors to get the episodes back that they previously knew about. A collector is going to get the best “deal” for them on a major anniversary year. Waiting for the 70th or 75th anniversary might not be an option if the reels disintegrate by then! Even if they aren’t complete stories, having those listed episodes back would still be huge, giving us episodes from three different stories where none currently exist. And it would give us the earliest Patrick Troughton episode to date, at a time when his portrayal of the Doctor was still being refined. Again, I won’t hold my breath about any of this. But if something happens, this is the year when it’s most likely to happen.
I think if random episodes have been recovered than it is more likely to have come from private collectors not some dusty archive somewhere in Africa or the far east. Surprised a few haven't come from private collectors living in Australia. ABC there showed a lot of b&w Doctor Who back in the 1960s/70s including a lot of what is now missing 2nd Doctor episodes including Power and Evil of the Daleks.
we've heard for decades (almost the entire run of Nu-Who) that a privet collector is said to have episodes in full that they refuse to part with because the BBC has not met their price. and that this person is well known to have had other thought lost media and that the police are often at his house because people keep trying to break in to rescue the episodes, and he just laughs saying he's not stupid enough to keep them in his home. which would suggest they are under lock and key in a bank safe deposit box somewhere.
there are NO missing episodes coming back for the 60th. looks like the end of the road. deepfake AI and cgi is the only way to replace these episodes and this may take another 10 years to do.
i would hope more episodes are found, i like whole sets and would love to see the ones im to young to have seen. but i think you are corect it is the alternative wishfull thinking dimention. you are also right in that film does not do well after 50-60 years depending on the episode
Honestly I think out of all those episodes, I think the smugglers ones are kinda a safe bet to say they are probably found. Like wasn't there a scoop where it has been said that and underwater menace would get the animation treatment? Idk it just seems to match a bit too well up
Lots of people don't realise, The Myth Makers is really really good and if they have found 2 and 4 those are really good episodes from the story, especially 4 which is really dark.
I don't think that trying to find the missing episodes is a lost cause because we've recovered so many of them. Originally over 200 episodes were missing but we've already recovered over 100 of those episodes. I think it's possible that a lot of the 97 missing episodes might be found but I can't guarantee it. But it will make me happier if some or all of the 97 episodes are recovered.
I wish The massacre,Power of the daleks, The Highlanders. Fury from the deep and the wheel in space could be found and episode 7 of evil and episode 4 of tenth planet !
It would seem rather odd that we only find lost episodes on anniversary years. I just hope that whatever they find, they are episodes that have not been animated already, because that would seem now like a waste of effort
I'd love for it to be true... but I'm not going to get my hopes up until the official announcement. What we got back a decade ago was great... but it was nowhere near the amount that the Omnirumour promised. And that was a bit of a letdown. So this time, I think I'll spare myself the disappointment by holding off on getting overly excited about this.
Wasn't there a rumour earlier this year that The Smugglers was to be animated? Might have been The Savages but if it was Smugglers that might give more indication that some of it's been found. Would make it easier to animate
I'm not getting my hopes up, since it's possibly just an error, but I would love it if more missing episodes returned. Sadly though, as you and Josh Snares said, film degrades as time goes by.
well... I would really want Marco Polo to come back tho episode 4 may not every see the light of day again bc there are NO telesnaps of it at all. I would like to see The Highlanders and The Smugglers animated (seeing they have now animated most of Season 4) and I hope that maybe 1 or more episodes of The Dalek's Master Plan can come back
I think some are still out there - esp those where it's the final missing episode to complete a story. I'd also guess one entire missing story is out there too - held onto by a collector. Just an uneducated guess.
I can remeber back when Doctor Who was off sceen and people were claiming to have missing episodes and would only return them when Doctor Who was back on screen...
What would be amazing; especially if original Audio was available...Or reproducible by AI...Have the episodes reproduced using the Super Panavision 70 system. if you scour TH-cam you can see visuals f what can be don. Especially Star Trek X111. Thyat as a full show would be truly amazing... It's just a thought... But an interesting one.
Is there any chance why there’s radio silence about animations, the collection and these missing episodes potentially because of announcing something at Comic Con? I know that’s not usually what the events for but since DoctorWho is coming back to comic con this year. A great way to generate hype in new audiences as well as old is announcing a lot of this stuff there? Maybe? That is very much just wishful thinking. For me personally, there’s too much consistent chatter this year about missing episodes from The Mirror saying 9 episodes, the Australian tapes and the private collectors tapes, the Apple TV cock up, the rumoured animations and Philip Morris’ comments for it all to be a coincidence. I prey we get SOMETHING this year.
but all of them are historical or space opera which is not the cream of the missing eps so maybe its true galaxy 4 ep 4 as well i think is on there also the 20th year they found a few, 30th tomb of the cyberman, 40th daleks masterplan 2, 50th 9 eps and morecambe and wise ep had melted after being recovered
If the apple tv thing is a glitch then it's a very weird glitch i'm hoping there is something coming i try to hold my high expectations but also preparing for disappointment as well i hope they have something for the 60th where well overdue for a new announcement i certainly would love to see an episode of "The Highlanders" as that was Jamie's first and "The Myth Makers" as that's Vicki's departure and Katarina's first appearance, "The Space Pirates" is probaly the only missing story that's one of my least interests but anything is better than none. My most wanted are "The Massacre", Tenth Planet (4) and "The Power of the Daleks".
The Space Pirates would actually be an incredible find, as it would restore the audio of said episodes (which currently have some of the worst audio recordings). Additionally, there are no Telesnaps of the Space Pirates, so currently we don't have any idea what several sets and costumes even looked like at all. Plus The Space Pirates is a story that heavily relies on its visuals, and I fully believe the main reason it is disliked so much is because no can actually experience it as was intended, and all we are left with is patched together fragments that barely resemble the original product. A lot of that is true of the Myth Makers, but that story isn't as reliant on its visuals as Space Pirates is, and it's entirely missing status prevents people from judging it based on the what survives. With Space Pirates, part 2 is not as relevant to the main story as the other 5 are, thus people who watch just the surviving episode and judge the quality of the whole story aren't giving the story a fair chance.
The Highlanders would be the earliest Patrick Troughton episode, from a period where he was still refining how he would play the role. Worth it for that reason alone! 🙂
Could just be the animations. It has already been announced that the Smugglers and some others (forget which) are gonna be animated and shown on british tv. for the anniversary
Without even looking I can tell you it's another false hope. At the most there are only a handful still out there anyway. Just go ahead and animate them all already.
Yep, fake rumours even on the 60th anniversary year. There will be no more discoveries as Phil Morris clearly hasn't found anymore that he could have been holding onto for a surprise 60th anniversary gift for the fans.
This may sound extremely unrealistic, but I believe that as long as we keep our faith in Doctor Who and it’s fans, all the missing gaps will find their way back to the archive before the 21st century ends. That’s what I believe.
NO dr who at the film is faboulous event, just 1 basil brush. unless something gets announced in the next 3 weeks DR WHO recoveries look non existant from now on
We've been hearing that they know of episodes in collectors' hands for years, there doesn't really seem to have been much that's changed recently, though I suppose they could have gotten hold of them. Still though, I wouldn't believe anything until they announce it officially. Otherwise you're just asking to be let down. I'm sure plenty of people remember when we were "definitely" getting Marco Polo. That list from Matthew Purchase would be a great range though. I really like The Myth Makers, The Highlanders 2 would be both Jamie and Troughton's earliest episodes recovered episodes, and I actually like the 2nd half of The Space Pirates. Plus it'd make the story almost complete. The Smugglers recon I actually watched last night and wasn't keen, maybe 2 episodes would improve it though! Myth Makers doesn't have telesnaps. Nothing in Season 3 does until The Gunfighters. Space Pirates doesn't either as John Cura was almost dead by that point, I believe the last telesnaps are The Mind Robber 3. This is probably an error, but my question is, if it's an error, where did the synopses come from? Do they just have those pre-written for all the missing episodes?
The best thing to do is Believe it when we see it!!! How about for starters, the asshole who stole The Web of Fear episode 3(first ever appearance of Alistair Lethbridge Stewart) returns the episode to both the BBC and to the fans.
Its been 10 years since the last episode recovery!!! The films are nearly 60 years old at this point and thus may not last beyond another 10 years if they don't hand them over soon!
I did see a few weeks back that supposedly Philip Morris knows of 9 (iirc) missing episodes that are in private hands, so maybe he's convinced 8 of these to be returned potentially? Even if these aren't the episode most fans have been wishing for, even if it is a 'bad' episode like the Space Pirates I'd be happy to see any missing episode returned, especially if it's one that hasn't been animated.
Just another false hope. We heard for years about missing episodes in the hands of collectors but never heard which episodes, give me an episode title or better yet a clip and then I'll believe, until then I'll hope that the powers that be will change their minds and produce more animated DVD's of missing stories (which is more of a better chance than phantom missing episodes turning up!)
I was totally convinced that Marco Polo and The Celestial Toymaker had been found and they were saving the announcement for the 60th just like they did Enemy of the World and Web of Fear for the 50th. I figured Russel T Davies was aware of this and that’s why he had enlisted the ToyMaker for a re-appearance in the 3 60th Specials. But this is just my own fantastical belief based on either rumors I heard or dreams I had or both. If it turns out to be true then wonderful!!! As for actual episodes, Phillip Morris still maintains he knows that some collectors have a few absolute 100% definite Doctor Who episodes not currently held by the BBC. Dunno if it’s the sort of thing that the collectors have it willed to the Beeb in their Will once they pass, or why they haven’t been negotiated for already. And of course my other belief that is based on pure supposition is that Ep3 of Web of Fear is held either by Phillip Morris or he knows who has it because he sold it himself to recoup some $$$. After all, even Phillip Morris says Ep3 was included when he found them, but mysteriously disappeared between shipping them out no receiving them in the UK. I call bollocks on that, I absolutely think he knows, and come on, it’s been 10 years, and since it was Lethbridge Stewart’s first episode then I’d think it would be a fan that it was sold to, otherwise the episode wouldn’t be any more special than any other to a non-fan I would think. And a true Who Fan would surely understand that other fans should be able to enjoy, especially after holding it for 10 freaking years! Here’s hoping there really are new found episodes, even whole stories, and were held back for the 60th! EVen the Web of Fear was definitely leaked well before the 50th, I remember reading about it myself and being horribly disappointed when nothing seem to come of it. I dont recall if Enemy of the World leaked as well beforehand; because I’m ashamed to say I didnt think the story would be very good so never paid much attention to it, but boy was I wrong, I think I enjoyed it just as much as Web of Fear, if not a bit more! :-) SO here’s to new lost episodes and complete stories coming up soon…anyone remember when Web and Enemy were officially announced and available? Hopefully a similar approach will be followed this time too! :-)

I like the history stories - love to see The Highlanders
I really hope that this is true. I need more Troughton in my life.
My first choice would be "The Dalek Masterplan"
Funny you should say that. I read on a forum that at least two episodes of " The Macra Terror" was shown at a school in New Zealand.
Well it would be great if some missing episodes,Would be found. As it is coming up to 60 th anniversary❤🙉🙊🙈
we've heard for decades (almost the entire run of Nu-Who) that a privet collector is said to have episodes in full that they refuse to part with because the BBC has not met their price. and that this person is well known to have had other thought lost media and that the police are often at his house because people keep trying to break in to rescue the episodes, and he just laughs saying he's not stupid enough to keep them in his home. which would suggest they are under lock and key in a bank safe deposit box somewhere.
Or a storage facility that's also under 24 hour surveillance.
What a bastard this guy is.
there are NO missing episodes coming back for the 60th. looks like the end of the road. deepfake AI and cgi is the only way to replace these episodes and this may take another 10 years to do.
i would hope more episodes are found, i like whole sets and would love to see the ones im to young to have seen. but i think you are corect it is the alternative wishfull thinking dimention. you are also right in that film does not do well after 50-60 years depending on the episode
If Marco Polo is never found - a full-scale, epic colour animation would be most welcome
Saw an interview with Philip Morris a couple years ago, where he said there were 4 episodes in private hands. So maybe some came free?
I hope more will turn up. However, it must be remembered we have all the audios. That's a miracle in itself.
God id love some episodes found
I want 'The Daleks' Master Plan'
Honestly I think out of all those episodes, I think the smugglers ones are kinda a safe bet to say they are probably found. Like wasn't there a scoop where it has been said that and underwater menace would get the animation treatment? Idk it just seems to match a bit too well up
Lots of people don't realise, The Myth Makers is really really good and if they have found 2 and 4 those are really good episodes from the story, especially 4 which is really dark.
To have anything of Marco Polo would be nice.
Here here!
What if the listings are what is getting animated and the rest of the episodes were what was recovered?
That could be a possibility 👀
But why would they only list specific parts?
I hope more missing episodes turn up and get released again I love Doctor Who
Smashing hair 😊
Pretty sure Philip Morris has found SOMETHING, just not these. I guess we'll find out what exactly in November.
Speaking of BritBox. I have recently noticed that Classic Who is no longer available on the service here in Australia
Please let it be true 🙏
I never pass a skip without having a quick look.
It would be nice but the reality is the well is probably dry now. Animation is probably the way to go now!
Im hoping this is true.
I want more animations... there I said it 😂🎉❤
I can remeber back when Doctor Who was off sceen and people were claiming to have missing episodes and would only return them when Doctor Who was back on screen...
Wouldn't it be amazing if say 7 more episodes popped up for the 60th anniversary?? Id love to see the Marco Polo storyline show up!
R.I.P To that hope.
i've seen so0mething on the next two to be released will be the smugglers and underwater menace
i dont know what to think
What would be amazing; especially if original Audio was available...Or reproducible by AI...Have the episodes reproduced using the Super Panavision 70 system. if you scour TH-cam you can see visuals f what can be don. Especially Star Trek X111. Thyat as a full show would be truly amazing... It's just a thought... But an interesting one.
I would like to see power of the daleks back because it is the frist Post regeneration
It’s also one of the best who stories of all time
Still possible, I was hoping fo web of fear, we have that now I'm happy ha
I’ll never be able to watch power of the Daleks will I…?
Only time will time…it always does.
Well said!
I wouldn't trust myself with rare copies of missing episodes to be honest, I'd fear that I would drop or destroy them 😅
I'd be the same 😂
I'd be emailing Paul Vanezis and then refusing to touch them until he turned up.
Yep false hope
My thought: too good to be true.
You look like a husky Stubagful.
I mean this in the best possible way.
They have the audio
Have to be honest there not the episodes I would choose if some did turn up, but anything would be better than nothing.
Better than nothing absolutely!
The Highlanders would be the earliest Patrick Troughton episode, from a period where he was still refining how he would play the role. Worth it for that reason alone! 🙂
Glory to The Space Pirates should it be recovered. Let it be an Enemy of the World and be much better than perceived.
Could just be the animations. It has already been announced that the Smugglers and some others (forget which) are gonna be animated and shown on british tv. for the anniversary
Any update?
I burned them last week sorry
I still believe most of the lost episodes are in the hands of private collectors.
I think it's likely the BBC has recovered at least 1 missing episode & and is withholding it until the 60th anniversary.
Are your hopes officially crushed now?
False hope
I did see a few weeks back that supposedly Philip Morris knows of 9 (iirc) missing episodes that are in private hands, so maybe he's convinced 8 of these to be returned potentially? Even if these aren't the episode most fans have been wishing for, even if it is a 'bad' episode like the Space Pirates I'd be happy to see any missing episode returned, especially if it's one that hasn't been animated.
What about the missing Blu Ray Collection...? Have they forgot to release the next box set?
Im probably being too optimistic but there seem to be too many coincidences for this to be a hoax.
at this point im just frustrated were not getting confirmation
would love to see the savages. if they have been sitting on this find and waiting for the 60th anniversary that is a poor way to exploit fans
Clickbait title is clickbait.
