Rachel Sweet is a terrific talented singer who is so under appreciated. She's right up there with the Ronnetts and Ronnie Spector or the Crystal's. Wow! Love those Girl Group Sounds of her voice.
I grew up watching Cry Baby and Hairspray(the original and remake) and I always loved all the songs she sings in those movies, never heard this before and now I’m obsessed !
She did a video w/ Rex Smith where she rides up to the church on a motorcycle to marry him....singingthe great tune '......... Everlasting Love' priceless !!!!!!!!!!!!!look for it, watch it, I never get tired of it !!!!
Mesmerizing, addicting. When I first heard this song. I thought the last part of the song didn’t match the beginning. Then I learned it is two songs combined.
I've been in love with Rachel since I first heard her, long ago, on the radio in concert. King Biscuit concert series, I believe. More recently I've been trying to hear her again. I could watch her videos daily (now that I found them!) and I wonder what happened to this sweet, sweet voice.
She switched to producing and writing SItcoms. Check out the credits to Hot in Cleveland, The Goldbergs, Dharma & Greg, George Lopez Show and others if you want to see what happened to her.
@@cvan3064 Thank you for that. It's still too bad she doesn't still sing, unless her voice changed for the negative, so to speak. Be multi-talented. At least in her youth, her singing had a sexy appeal to it, on purpose or not. Thanks again
Why all the recent comments in the last few days? And, they are not exactly trying to disguise the fact that she is lip syncing to her studio version. Pointing that out is no great insight.
@MartyMcFly88 Exactly. If you read through some of the other comments, people point out that she's lip-syncing like they've discovered something we all don't know. It's the same crowd that always feels the need to point out that something's a cover. A good example is When Will I be Loved. On any video in which Linda Randstad is performing that, there's always a few that want to feel smart by pointing out that it's a cover of the Everly Brothers as if we all didn't know.
What a great voice! Too bad Rachael wasn't marketed better. She would have been a force in pop music back in the 80s! We guys would have fell over back then if we would have seen this video! What a cutie!
Her problem had more to do with the state of radio in New York, where hits were often determined then: She never really got the success she should have gotten, largely because she was having her first chart success at a time of a massive change in New York radio when WABC had softened their format considerably ahead of a flip to talk on May 10, 1982 and WNBC having a program director known as "Kenny" in Howard Stern's 1995 autobiography "Private Parts" that Howard had other names for in real life that were none too pleasant he used all the way to that PD's death a few years ago who was VERY conservative (most notably during his time as PD, a band called Sneaker in 1982 had a song peak at #34 nationally "More Than Just The Two of Us" that got that high almost exclusively off airplay on WNBC, with that song in their 1982 year-end countdown was ahead of The Human League's "Don't You Want Me" that was a #1 hit nationally in the US). This left WYNY-FM (then at 97.1) as the closest to a Top 40 station in New York (and they were really adult contemporary) until WAPP-FM (then at 103.5, the two stations famously switched spots on the dial in 1988 after both changed their formats previously) and more notably WHTZ-FM (Z-100 at 100.3) debuted (40 years ago this Wednesday, August 2, 1983) and WPLJ at 95.5 completed a slow flip from Rock to Top 40 over the course of the summer of 1983. That is what prevented her from becoming bigger. While she didn't get the success musically, she was very successful overall, hosting her own show in the early 1990's on the then-fledgling Comedy Channel (now Comedy Central) and then REALLY hit it big as a writer on the TV Land (and later syndicated) series "Hot in Cleveland" that starred Betty White among others.
She was a very talented young singer. She moved over to television production. She actually played George's cousin in the "Contest" episode of Seinfeld.
The first time I ever heard Rachel she was six years old singing "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus" on a weekly televised talent show from Cleveland Ohio. She sang just like this when she was only six.
She certainly should have been but the record companies kept pushing her to do lame covers of big hits. Find her early stuff like Truck Stop Queen. She’s the real deal. I’m still listening to her 40 years.
I dunno how many people y'all think could do Ronnie Spector right but its a darn short list for me! Rachel Sweets first album, Fool Around, was full of great promise. She had a sweet voice ( that flat SOARS in this video) and a accessible sound of Rock, pop,new wave and country tinges . I don't think her mgmt or label knew quite what to do with her other than playing up the"Jailbait" angle. I'm glad she had the huge hit with Rex and then went on the produce one of the great shows -SPORTSNITE with Aaron Sorkin. ❤❤❤
Do you know what.. She looks and sounds like my first proper girlfriend. (I challenge any man to know what that means👿) and this Phil Spector song just reaffirms my conviction that, I was born too late.. 😭😭😍😍😍😘👿
I remember her when I was in college. A great talent but the label did a poor job marketing her- she had a confusing identity. We didn’t know what she was.
Time hasn't touched this performance.
As good as new.
Idk what it is about this. But so nostalgic. Born in 1983. Took me back to my childhood. So good

Beautiful music and very Well performance by Rachel Sweet
She's playing that camera like an absolute PRO! You can't teach that. Watch her eyes and how she's playing to the camera - it's perfect!
PRO or POR.............n

Love that they combined to classics to make one unique song.
Wow very high quality. This doesn't feel like 1981. Amazing
Beautiful singer beautiful lady and beautiful long hair and beautiful voice
Beautifully said
She was really talented, this great cover proves it.
Mesmerizing, addicting. When I first heard this song. I thought the last part of the song didn’t match the beginning. Then I learned it is two songs combined.
Großartige Sängerin … und sieht klasse aus!
A very nice version of this great song.
She’s a real Stunna , these are one of the people who inspired me to do music
She’s got the whole package. Voice and looks. Very talented young lady!
Agreed
If I was a teenager in the early eighties I would have had a huge crush on her.
She looks like she could be from now. No crazy big hair, natural timeless makeup, classic outfit. Beautiful.
I've been in love with Rachel since I first heard her, long ago, on the radio in concert. King Biscuit concert series, I believe. More recently I've been trying to hear her again. I could watch her videos daily (now that I found them!) and I wonder what happened to this sweet, sweet voice.

Wow what a beauty, i thought this was at least 1990 but 1981 wow
What a voice - and she was just 19!
Goodfellas. Da aber das Original von den Crystals ( Phil Spector )
Rachel was 18 then, not 19. She was born in 1963, not in 1962 like they used to say. She has said this in her fan club many many years ago.
Great version...she is also a fantastic country music singer
I just love her voice
Me too, and she’s beautiful
She was such an underrated talent and beauty!!
was hat diese Frau für eine Stimme...und hübsch ist sie obendrein... what a voice this woman has... and pretty too...
Lovely powerful voice ❤
Great song about when that first time a kiss touches your very soul.
Thanks TopPop! Great sound on this video, and a wonderfully cheesy production. Rachel, as always, belts it out of the park.

Every single band and artist lip syncs in music videos

what a talent....imagine what she could have done with phil spector influence
Yes, too bad Spector turned out to be such a low-life. But she is underappreciated.
Yea, Phil probably would have killed her. But they could have made some hits before that happened.

I Love You Rachel Sweet 😍
Her..voice...😘😍
She could have been big if she had the right record company and a PR group promoting her.
Beautiful girl and music, beats what we have now.
Why have I never heard about her? Beautiful woman.
WOW!!!
Voice of an 😇 Angel
She should have been a bigger star - I've heard of her but never really listened until tonight
She certainly should have been but the record companies kept pushing her to do lame covers of big hits. Find her early stuff like Truck Stop Queen. She’s the real deal. I’m still listening to her 40 years.

If Stiff Records had promoted Rachel Sweet properly, she could have been another Britney. Great talent ... wasted!
shut up, stupid
It's not wasted, we're still listening to her songs ❤
