haha. I laughed out loud when I saw your comment. I think I actually agree with you, and may use that line going forward!!!!! Thanks for commenting!!!!
Nice Duo!!! Both sounded great and different enough to own both. Congrats on two spectacular guitars. Must be a hard choice which one to pick each time.
Nice comparison. I like the Martin . Alive sounding to my ear. Then again, I have three D-35s, and one is reimagined. One vintage and the other 2010. The 2010, however, blows the others out. The J4-5 is nice, and I almost bought one. Then I played an Martin SPD-16 KOA, and that ended that purchase.
That D35 is in pristine condition and is approaching 40 years old. Sometimes I pick it up to play and on the first strum, I think, this thing sounds godly!
The songwriter sounds better. I have a j45 and I used to have a songwriter and a j160, the songwriter sounded the best. In this test it's obvious that the Martin sounds more better, wood body creating the sound but the j45 sounds more like the strings.
Both sound pretty outstanding here. But I sold my D35 last year and recently picked up a J45. I was amazed at the build quality and sound of a new guitar and it has a more responsive piano like quality than I remember with the D35. I seemed to have to push the Martin with the style I play, which is not very aggressive. I like the form factor of the slope shoulder and don’t feel like I’m struggling to get around a large instrument. Both are great choices though. Thanks.
As others have commented both sound great, but as I own and bought new in 1986 a D35 I have to go with it. The biggest tonal difference is caused by the Martin having rosewood back and sides, whereas the J35 has mahogany. Rosewood is brighter sounding, whereas mahogany is warmer sounding.
I see you are fortunate like me. I also have both these guitars. I play the d-35 plugged more because I like lr baggs anthem pickup I had installed. My j-45 is a 2020 model with the vtc pickup in it and it sucks but acoustic I love j-45. They are both great.
My D35 is from 1988 and does not have electronics in it. I plan to keep it that way. As for the Gibson J45 and the LR Baggs VTC, I actually think it sounds pretty good. Regardless, they are called "acoustic" for a reason. I have never heard a pick up of any kind on an acoustic guitar that can match the depth and breath of a quality acoustic guitar and natural audio. Enjoy both of yours!!! We are both luck to have them!!!!
I own 2022 J45 Standard, 2023 Southern Jumbo Original, 2023 Hummingbird Original, and 2, 2024 Martin D18s. One in natural. Which is for sale. And the other has 1933 Ambertone finish.. and to me the D18 sounds better than all of the Gibsons. My friends are opposite. They like the Hummingbird the best.. all of them sound great. And each one of them has their place..
I'd be happy owning either one. I happen to have a D-35, so I don't need the Gibson. But, I certainly wouldn't turn it down. Mahogany has a beautiful sound, until you hear rosewood. Each has its place, one can't take the place of the other. Some of the best sounding guitars are made of one or the other. Go figure.
Feel, sounds, preference and lastly price… both are great guitars and I’ve played both as vintage models and I love them both. If one was vintage around $2800 and the other was vintage at $1500, I’m taking the less pricey one…unfortunately it is what it is. Again, both are great
Both great guitars. Not many reviews that compare the Martin Dreadnaught and J45 talk about the scale length, fretboard radius and neck profile. I love the sound of a D18 or D35 but much prefer the 'Playability' of a J45 for the shorter neck scale. That said, one day I'll get a Martin lol.
Both sound great but for me I'm lucky enough to have a J45 and a Martin D28 and I like the shorter scale on the Gibson and the neck I find that much more comfortable and I think therein lies the bigger decisions in many ways and it's the individual comfort feel If I'm totally honest I have a Hummingbird that I prefer to both, but that said I tend to play different stuff on each one so that's another factor and a reason why I love them all and wouldn't want to part with any of them If you particularly like certain music depending on that style I would choose one that I felt best suits, if I had only one to pick I'd probably go for the J45 as I think it is the most versatile for different genres although in fairness I stick between 50's and 70's including folk and country, Beatles, CCR Eagles etc Some genre's I just don't have any interest in so couldn't say what one might suit say rap or punk or jazz or prog or whatever else
sounds like you have some great options. Keep playing them all. I feel like all my guitars are living beings and each needs some love and attention by being played.
Tough call. I like the J-45 a little better. A better comparison would be the Gibson hummingbird vs. your D35. But I totally understand why you’d own these two and not a hummingbird.
Nice work here! Good comparison
And remember: Good Ol’ Boys play Martins. Bad Boys play Gibsons. Choir Boys play Taylors
haha. I laughed out loud when I saw your comment. I think I actually agree with you, and may use that line going forward!!!!! Thanks for commenting!!!!
Spot on!
@seviswitzerland3470 you’re a good ol’ bad boy
That is funny dude, but theres a Taylor called the 717 Builders Edition Its a Dreadnought that will hang with both of these easy.
One sounda like a Martin and one sounds like a Gibson - two great guitars doing what they are supposed ti do. Both beautiful
Good comparison. Great video and audio.
Nice Duo!!! Both sounded great and different enough to own both. Congrats on two spectacular guitars. Must be a hard choice which one to pick each time.
I try and give them both as much love as I can.
Leaning towards the j45 just slightly. If I had it my way, I’d love both
The J45 is just a monster of a guitar, but the Martin D35 has its place in the sun too!!
My D35 just seems to get better sounding by the day!!!
Wow interesting the 2010 blows the others away
D35 sounded fuller and resonated longer…thanks for the comparison.
That D35 is in pristine condition and is approaching 40 years old. Sometimes I pick it up to play and on the first strum, I think, this thing sounds godly!
I was going to buy a J45 but I bought a Gibson Songwriter instead because I liked the sound better.I still want a J45 though!
I think the Songwriter is a great guitar as well.
I've been watching many videos on the Songwriter lately; that's an amazing sounding guitar. It crushes everything in comparison; is it the rosewood?
the rosewood on he Martin makes that Martin sound amazing!!@@07blackdog
The songwriter sounds better. I have a j45 and I used to have a songwriter and a j160, the songwriter sounded the best. In this test it's obvious that the Martin sounds more better, wood body creating the sound but the j45 sounds more like the strings.
I ended up with both. it's a sad obsession
Both really great.
If only given one chose and only one, it’s the D-35. Both are superb though.
either is a great choice!!!

Couldn't agree more!
Boy I'm glad I finally got a J-45
Enjoy!!! It’s a great instrument!!!!!
My J45 will arrive today. Maybe someday I’ll own a D35 too!
your gonna love that j45!!!!!
Let me know how it plays and sounds!!!
@@seanhopkins3758 It’s great so far!
Both beautiful, not able to compare as they have their own distinct sound.
You’ve got a fantastic pair there!
TY!!! I love them both. I also have a Martin J40, a Taylor 314CE and a Breedlove Stage Mahogany. They all get lots of love!!!
As others have commented both sound great, but as I own and bought new in 1986 a D35 I have to go with it. The biggest tonal difference is caused by the Martin having rosewood back and sides, whereas the J35 has mahogany. Rosewood is brighter sounding, whereas mahogany is warmer sounding.
my D35 is a 1988 so ours are very close to each other in terms of the build.
Fantastic comparison buddy there both sound fantastic i tend to like the clarity from mahogany but both have there place cheers 👍
Thanks for giving the shoot out a look see!!!!!

wow. That is quite a collection of guitars that you have. I am envious.
Ooooh look at me, fvkn show off 😡😡 seriously though I'm jealous as hell!!
J-45 seams to be a little bit brighter with more mid range. I own the 45 and wouldn't change.
the J45 is definitely a great instrument.
The D35 has the lows n the tinkle sounds so much better.
I'd be happy owning either one. I happen to have a D-35, so I don't need the Gibson. But, I certainly wouldn't turn it down. Mahogany has a beautiful sound, until you hear rosewood. D35's are awesome. The build quality is exceptional and the warmth provided by the three piece back is just outstanding. Enjoy your instrument!!!!
Hi, good job ! Thanks.
I prefer the Gibson 🙂
That Gibson is a great guitar!!!

thanks for the comment. You can't go wring with either.

martin or gibson. Either way you can't go wrong.

hummingbirds are super expensive. I have always been intrigued by them and the J200 too. But you can only have so many acoustic guitars, or not!
What strings do you use on the J-45?
@@mikechivy D'Addario XS Phosphor Bronze 12-53. I use Elixr's on my Martins but the D'Addario's sound great on the J45.
Hunted for years bought the best D-35 I could find,
It’s still better, than most artists are able to run it!
I am a huge fan of the D35. It's warm and full with complete string separation. Enjoy yours!!!
Martin the winner without a struggle
That Martin is 36 years old and in pristine condition. It definitely opened up and sounds amazing!!!
Martin is the winner.
I love the warmth and balance of that guitar!!!
The J45 all day long
J-45 balls.
Martin IMO, more depth
The J45 is quite a bit younger. 2021 vs the martin which is 1988. So the Martin has clearly opened up over time.
the Gibby is better hands down. Own a songwriter custom shop I love.
I have been using that Gibson for studio recording lately.
I thought the D35 sounded better. But im biased i just bought one.
My D35 is about 35 years old. For three and a half decades it has either been on my lap or in its case. It has a sweet, rich sound!!!!
TOSSER!!!, GUILD D55E.😊😋🤗
The Guild D55E is an exceptional guitar. I don't own a Guild but have always fancied an M20.
