dude, you cant go to albania and not go to the beautiful albanian alps (valbona and theth) in the north or the beautiful albania riviera beaches (dhermi and borsh) in the south. also, the ancient ruins in apollonia, gjirokastor and butrint.
Ethan Matthews exactly what I was thinking. Also you missed out on a lot of delicious food (not just sufllaqe and byrek) Well till next time i guess 😁😊
that building is the ex-museum of Enver Hoxha (hodga), the communist dictator of Albania. He ruled Albania with an iron fist from 1945- 1985 (when he died). Just to give you an idea, with an example you can relate to, Traveling to foreign countries was not permitted, Albanians had no passports to leave Albania even within Albania movements were closely followed by the secret police. if you were caught trying to escape the country you would either get executed right there and then and after the body would be dragged in the villages close to the border to scare the people. Or if you were lucky you would get 15 years imprisonment and your family would be exiled to a God forsaken village to live in shame and with no rights to higher education or good jobs or good marriages. the pyramid museum ' architecture was done by his daughter (Pranvera Hoxha), who was an architect married to one of the best architects of Albania (Klement Kolaneci). On top, where now it is only a small dome, used to have a big red star, a communist symbol. "Workers of 5 continents unite against blood sucking capitalists". It used to be beautiful and shiny marble. There were several attempts to re-purpose it but it did not work out. Currently there is a plan to renovate it and make it more glamorous and the purpose is still being debated.
The Piramida was intended to be a Museum for Enver Hoxta, who was the Communist dictator of Albania until communism collapsed in the 90's. It was then used as a conference center until fell into disrepair. I believe that there's a plan to knock it down, but the locals want to keep it.
One of my coolest memories is from climbing down that pyramid. I am from the country side and when I was a kid I visited my aunt that lived in Tirana and she took me there, and I still remember how happy that made me.
The pyramid looked the same when I was there 10 years ago, but recently a saw a picture of a conference and all the politicians in front of that pyramid. So I guess it's been renovated and if you were to visit in 2024 you would not be able to climp it anymore
your videos have improved a lot mate!!! I am uploading videos from my recent time in Albania and I was seeing what else is out there and of course I stumbled across this! Unfortunately access to the pyramid is closed now! They are redeveloping it into some sort of community centre youth / technology centre, it is actually pretty cool. I did sneak in to try and get some shots but I was yelled at and told to leave by the guys working there
@Despitewhatyouthink thats because when those 35 year olds when they where 8 9 or 10 they didint do english back then thats why lol think before you say
@Despitewhatyouthink It's okay. You ain't wrong though. The people past 30 know nothing, besides Yes or No. Sometimes they would just start respond in different languages, such as Greek, Italian. The youth definitely has improved and, there is actually a rare group of young generation that doesn't know at least one foreign language. The entire Albanian young population is at least fluent in one foreign language, or bilingual. It's a good thing to know other languages besides your native language. Greetings from Albania.
I was in Tirana a week ago and in case you haven’t heard or been back since, the Pyramid of Tirana has been fully restored since you made this video and you can now freely climb up and stand on top and even inside of it and take photos :)
I asked a friend about Kosovo a few months ago because I wanted to go there. She told me that they are building there lots of new buildings and that the best thing you can do there is partying :D
Right, I only had a brief visit of the place, I am upload that video right now from today of exploring a bit of the capital city of Pristina. Interesting place, extremely nice people. I barely scraped the surface, I would like to return and learn more.

Well that’s a comfort at 2:03. In Durrës I looked at this wall and it was in Slavic language (Serbian I assume). It was saying something bad about Albania and my brain was like “Motrat n’goj kush e ka shkruajtur”.
Hi Nick, The Pyramid was built (by his daughter) in 1988 as a museum to Enver Hoxha who ruled Albania for 50 years. When communism collapsed across Europe in November 1989, people began to destroyed dictatorship symbols of the past, including the Tirana Pyramid, hence the cars burning outside. Hope to visit it myself in a few weeks time.
@@IndigoTraveller that particular picture was actually from a protest turned violent on 21/01/2011, led by the head of the opposition which is now the prime minister, the building you see on the background was completed in 2006 so the picture cant be from the 90's
Pristina, Kosovo is Smaller than Tirana but it's as dynamic , especially at night. But the coolest city in Kosovo is Prizren in my opinion , beautiful old city with a fortress , river , beautiful scenery and food ( the best ).
Next time you’re there, I’d recommend going to the southern city of Sarande and then take the 30 min boat ride the the Grecian Island of Corfu. I’ve got some American Missionary friends who would love to host you and show you around. Very serious offer. Great video!

I wonder how English was becoming fluently spoken in Albania (and Kosovo). Every time I watch any TH-cam videos that interview random people from Albania and Kosovo in English, they did speak it very well.
When you introduced yourself to the kids, a movie line popped up in my mind. Someone was about to kill someone in the movie. "Say hello to old Nick from me". Is your name an English name for the Devil and is it obvious to all the native English speakers? You know your English better than me :-) I liked this video very much. Indeed, the pyramid, not a regular and well known tourist attraction....
Hahaha Yo! I thought My name came from Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas.... Doesn't he live in your country anyway?.. Haha I dunno about the devil, maybe I am the devil? Cheers mate :)
The Pyramid was built as a museum/shrine to dictator Enver Hoxha housing all of his memorabilia and belongings (kind of like a modern-day Pharaoh). I remember going there as a kid when it opened as a museum. It was very grand and ornate with red carpeting and roundabout architecture with an open center. I think it had 3 stories and each told a chapter of the story of Hoxha's life through objects belonging to him (army uniform, books, gun etc.) and the Communist party. I think in the 90s it became a dance club and then a convention center and now seems abandoned.
You need to get back there. We have a large number of Albanians seeking asylum in the UK and the reasons are disturbing and sad. Albania is a nation experiencing trauma for a long time.

Yo the weird stuff from the communist era you were looking for is a bit far from the city center not to mention that even the people there find it hard to remember coz most consider those things garbage and there is not much left. If you only knew there are two cold war bunkers, one is right behind the mosque at the city center and the other is far east uptown close to the mountain. People call them Bunkart 1 and Bunkart 2. Here is a google link of both locations: www.google.ca/maps/search/bunkart/@41.3383764,19.8227188,14z/data=!3m1!4b1 Also you got two to three castles that you can visit but again they are far from the city, one being on the west side of it on top of a hill overlooking airport and the second on southwest side of the city along a hilly national road leaving the city. Just one more thing, probably been hearing it a lot, you have to go south, not only for nature and the beach but there are more cold war stuff down south.

That pyramid was a museum build by the communist regime to commemorate the brutal Albanian communist dictator Enver Hoxha that died in 1985. Last time I looked in to it they were going to demolish it and build something else there.
Like you say, stuff like that pyramid is interesting to tourists. However to the locals it is a reminder of a painful past. As an Albanian myself, I think it should not be demolished. Let it stay there as a reminder of the past. Because those who forget the past are bound to repeat it. There was a proposed development that would be build around and over the pyramid in order to preserve it as a tourist attraction. However I think another design was approved that will demolish the pyramid.
Thank you to all the Albanians that made my short time in your country so special. I’m definitely coming back! And thanks to everyone else for watching!

That pyramid was a museum build by the communist regime to commemorate the brutal Albanian communist dictator Enver Hoxha that died in 1985.
Last time I looked in to it they were going to demolish it and build something else there.
Thanks for the information mate!
