      Hello From Mark In Kentucky. I recently retired after nearly 32 years of welding/fabrication at a state government equipment repair facility where I worked on many of the rotten truck beds. I have found that the slicer wheels on a grinder was probably the best method of cutting out the “Crust” and which the other material that used to be metal was no longer metallic. In fact, The Cutmaster 102 would absolutely not cut some of the worst areas and I would have to either use the slicer wheel or melt it out with a OxyAcetyline cutting torch.
      A good deal of my repairs on the Galion beds that we had was repairing or replacing the top section of the bed which was usually tubing and as you did, also welding in the bottom section which luckily for me was not rounded like your project. Our newer Galion beds had flat brackets welded center ways between the front and rear of the top section of the bed which really helped strengthen the sideboards. The brackets that I used to make to help the older beds that I was working on were 1/4 inch flat with the bottom of the plate for example being around 10 inches long and the top being around 8 inches long which had a nice look to it. The tallness of the brackets was usually relative to the height of the sideboards. Our facility used to purchase at least 3 inch thick rough cut oak lumber from local sawmills for lumber and for the tandem dump trucks and 2 inch rough oak for single axle 2,1/2 ton trucks. The Mig wire that I used was either.035 or .044 Lincoln L56 copper clad wire using a MillerMatic 350 welder. I would love to have a dollar for every inch of Mig wire that I burned repairing those junky beds. I honestly can’t say that I used exactly the same techniques for every bed repair; Because One Size Does Not Fit All when you are doing the welding repair thing. Take Care My Fellow Welding Friend.

    The worst rust repair is a rust jacked double frame repair, that had about 3/4" of rust between frame rails. A friend did his, he removed the box, cut off the hinge bracket, removed the two rear axels, springs, cross members and a few other things. It looked like too much work for me to do. I called a shop for a price to do it, they estimated about $20,000. I got rid of my truck that needed that work. I now look very closely for rust before I buy a truck.

    Vulcan flux core is pretty good wire. I've used a lot of it with good success. Tried some other cheap flux wire and had lot of porosity problems. Flux core is so much more expensive because of the manufacturing process to make tubular wire filled with flux, but you also do not need to pay for gas so it evens out quite a lot in that regard. As you noted, it is far superior for dirty aplications to solid wire mig. Nice work. It's too bad the owner does not want to do more work to repair more of the structure but you can only do what they are willing to pay for.

    Biggest problem I've seen is that you didn't treat the old metal underneath to prevent further rusting inside or at least slow it down. You really did not accomplish much except to slow down the inevitable by missing that one step.

    Terribly damaged by rust - the structural integrity compromised. But the steel patching creates a facade. The steel plate welded on is thin and add little strength. Truck later probably sold to some sucker - with degree of rust hidden. And they end up with a real lemon. And a danger to society.

    Here's a rule of thumb. Any structural part removed from that truck should be replaced by a part of same or better gauge steel. Nothing like that flimsy sh!t that was used. I have never seen anyone actually post something so bad. It's a safety concern, but also a liability concern. If that truck ever got into an accident, the welder could be sued for such poor work. But...the owner wants it that way. Well, the welder can always refuse this kind of job.

      They could only be sued if the accident was caused by failure of their repair. And even then it's not a guarantee that anything would come from it.

    • @scottysutherland3568
      @scottysutherland3568 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @jaxithfox in order to PROVE it was the welders fault for the failure is EXTREMELY difficult and rare. Without a fatality, there won't even be an investigation into it. The welding police do NOT exist the way so many people think they do.

    • @ronnieswindski825
      @ronnieswindski825 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Though I agree it's a little thin and a thick piece wouldn't cost much more, odds are this truck belongs to some mехісаn who has no money to spare. That bring said, that part really isn't that structural.... when you go to dump, almost all the weight is on those two main inner frame rails. Considering there are countless mason dumps with the sides rusted off completely and in operation everyday, it doesn't even matter. Also, this isn't a triaxle dumping 27 tons, this little truck is rated for probably 1.5-2 tons. That's nothing not to mention probably half that weight is on the back hinge when going up...
