Looks like solid work and a great job for some side dollars. You might want to pick up some welding blankets at the Harbor Freight so that weld spatter can't damage anything around the work site. Last thing you need is for the customer to charge you for damage to their air suspension via any blobs/spatter. Also i recommend a cheap needle scaler to make life easier in the prep/cleanup portion of the work.
Couldn't have said it better myself and when the lines are pressured up they seem to melt through much easier than if they didn't have any air pressure
That is called a ICC bumper. Part of it's history if I remember right was the death of the actress Jane Mansfield. Her car rear ended a trailer and her car made it up to the axles, taking the top of the car off and her head. I think it was Louisiana in the 1960,s. I believe it is safe to say you were not working for the sharpest pencil in the box. A sharp commercial cop will have that trailer out of service on the side of the highway as your modification allows the flaps to sail back, thus damaging many windshields.

That's called a Mansfield bar, crash bar or ice bar and those are legally required on trailers to be within 4 inches of the outer most part of the rear of the trailer. Not that you did anything wrong. You did the work you were asked to do. The driver however will probably be put out of service the next time he meets a DOT officer.
How do you market your skills?? What did you have to do to get your 1st dozen customers?? Can anyone tell me a marketing strategy that works for a welder with no market reputation???
@@mcfwelding Which ranger do you have? I'm considering a 250 or 260 MPX. I watched a review of the 260 MPX and they said the 260 wasn't to good at downhill pipe. I wouldn't be doing a lot of that but occasionally I would have a little to do. Have you ever welded with a 260? I love the smaller size. Would fit well on my service body.
Two questions: Were you using a flapper wheel? Were you running the welder off a gasoline-powered generator? - if so, specs on the generator please . New subber thanks you!
Truckloads of nickel and dime customers like you out there in the world. No respect for the person who has the equipment and the skills to do the work.

NO Guard On the grinder, na just messing with ya. I always drill a hole in anything like that and explain why to the customer. Boxed in sections will always get water trapped at some point. Think of it this way, all chassis have holes in it so water can drain and dry
Doing my mobile welding side hustle I charge $1.50 a minute min 1 hr plus materials..... So no matter what I'm getting 90 bucks a hour. But when I have to do rod iron fencing I'm $3 dollar a HR min of 2 hrs
So most mobile contractors charge a hourly rate with a minimum (usually 4 hours) and then fuel, materials and consumables all added as separate charges. So a welder is usually $80-$150 a hour so compared to that your $450 minimum sounds bang on to me.
I'm 450.00 min, 3 hrs, plus plus plus like you, plus travel door to door @2.00 per mile, no exceptions. Do quality work, show up when you say, come prepared, and get job done right, like a professional, customer will be happy.
@@buddylouis8348 I don't charge traveling for under 20 minutes coz it's all onsite farm repairs, modifications etc. But fuck, I get insane loads of work..!!!
I'll do almost any job big or small I dont charge a minimum to come out I just try to charge a fair price I get a lot of guys who only need like an exhaust welded I'll charge those guys 75-150 bucks depending on how much exhaust needs to go on the car even if it's only 75 bucks that's a small job where I'm not spending a lot of time fixing it I'm still making 75 an hour if it took me an hour or 35 bucks if it took me 2 usually the hardest part about a job is taking the time to get the material and do it
Hey that works. Customers don't have to use me, i give em a price and if they like it i roll with it. its side work, so to me personally the $100 jobs are not worth my time especially if its a mobile job. im sure you have spent thousands on your equipment just as i have so i charge what i like to charge. you know this game aint cheap and diesel is 6.50 a gallon here in NJ right now so shits expensive to run when im running diesel equipment.
Brother, you are bad ass on the buzz box! There is no arguing that! But why on earth would you ever do a job like that with anything but a wire feed? A Lincoln 110 wire feed is 700 bucks with argon and would make those small jobs soooooo much cleaner and easier!! anyway, that's my thought, but all in all you are a welding ninja! Maybe you should look up "Rear Underrun Protection System" or "mansfield bar" before you cut in to a federally regulated device.

What welder do you use on these little side jobs?
lincoln ranger 305, older unit
Love the video. More like it
Thanks! Will do!
My wife from Flanders NJ agrees with you on the best pizza is NJ Pizza......me too
most of jersey has the goods
How do you market your skills?? What did you have to do to get your 1st dozen customers?? Can anyone tell me a marketing strategy that works for a welder with no market reputation???
Check out my how to get work video on my page. explains everything I do
Should’ve used 7018 bud it’s a D.O.T bumper as soon as that driver backs into something or someone hit him that weld is going to crack to shit.
it'll hold just fine bud
Hell yea. Hopefully!
What type and watt generator do you use?
Now use a lincoln ranger 305 diesel welder
What welder are you using?
Lincoln ranger
@@mcfwelding Which ranger do you have? I'm considering a 250 or 260 MPX. I watched a review of the 260 MPX and they said the 260 wasn't to good at downhill pipe. I wouldn't be doing a lot of that but occasionally I would have a little to do. Have you ever welded with a 260? I love the smaller size. Would fit well on my service body.
Two questions: Were you using a flapper wheel? Were you running the welder off a gasoline-powered generator? - if so, specs on the generator please .
New subber thanks you!
I was using a lincoln ranger diesel powered welding machine. and i was using a 40 grit flap disk i believe to clean it up
@@mcfwelding Thank you.
Seems like a very high price to me, that is an hour job at the most. But more power to you for getting your money.
RigoFD yo dude you must be a banker wallstreet .1 question do you want steak or beans with no meat
Truckloads of nickel and dime customers like you out there in the world. No respect for the person who has the equipment and the skills to do the work.
Would 6010 not be OK if it were structural.?
7018 is used for most structure welding
@@mcfwelding oh.. we used to build frames and cabinets with 6010, but the manager said the only reason we didn't use 7018 is because they don't sit well or something?
Here’s a thought I will pay to ride and train with you. I’m retired looking to learn and make a few bucks. 🤷♂️ I’m in Jersey also great content thanks
Where from ?
Whats the best way to get into welding?
Buy a welder
@@mcfwelding Nicely said, lol.
Take a course at the community college etc. See if you're interested/made for it💪
Im not sure where in Jersey u r, but do u do work in Philadelphia?
thats a negative. Im in north jersey
Need weeping holes
NO Guard On the grinder, na just messing with ya. I always drill a hole in anything like that and explain why to the customer. Boxed in sections will always get water trapped at some point. Think of it this way, all chassis have holes in it so water can drain and dry
Cut at bout legs move one end to we’re you want then cap other end the weld to legs
IS that english? holy shit
@@mcfwelding I was wondering the same thing. Hillbillies and keyboards don't mix.
Teach your kids to weld and they will never be unemployed!
damn right
Sawzaw 🤫
450$ seems fair to me. I would have charged the same here in NY.
Yea it works for me
Your from NJ I’m from NJ lol I own DEJESUS JR Truck & TRAILR Repair in Vineland Nj just subscribe to your channel pretty cool videos
nice your down south jersey
THOSE OVERRIDE BARS ARE REGULATED BY THE FEDS. Should a car driver rear-end this trailer MCF will be included in the law suit.
I can see running down hill on the front and the back . Why not push the top ?
Not sure what you mean here
Doing my mobile welding side hustle I charge $1.50 a minute min 1 hr plus materials..... So no matter what I'm getting 90 bucks a hour. But when I have to do rod iron fencing I'm $3 dollar a HR min of 2 hrs
Where is your hearing protection? Haha!! It would have prevented that spark from going down your ear.
True that
Can you mig that??
Sure
So most mobile contractors charge a hourly rate with a minimum (usually 4 hours) and then fuel, materials and consumables all added as separate charges. So a welder is usually $80-$150 a hour so compared to that your $450 minimum sounds bang on to me.
you got it, 1 hour travel, 4 hour work minimum, 5 total and you can figure what i get an hour from that
I'm 450.00 min, 3 hrs, plus plus plus like you, plus travel door to door @2.00 per mile, no exceptions.
Do quality work, show up when you say, come prepared, and get job done right, like a professional, customer will be happy.
@@buddylouis8348 I don't charge traveling for under 20 minutes coz it's all onsite farm repairs, modifications etc. But fuck, I get insane loads of work..!!!
That dude paid you to make sure he doesn't pass a DOT inspection ever again
Maybe, maybe not, he's drunk all the time anyway he'll have bigger problems with the DOT
Wet grinding discs explode. Not having a gaurd is absolutely ignorant at least youre using your hood as a face shield other than that good work lol
I'll do almost any job big or small I dont charge a minimum to come out I just try to charge a fair price I get a lot of guys who only need like an exhaust welded I'll charge those guys 75-150 bucks depending on how much exhaust needs to go on the car even if it's only 75 bucks that's a small job where I'm not spending a lot of time fixing it I'm still making 75 an hour if it took me an hour or 35 bucks if it took me 2 usually the hardest part about a job is taking the time to get the material and do it
Fair for a cheap customer maybe, not for you.
If your a professional tradesman equipped properly, then get paid as such.
if that works for you great. this works for me and its how im doing it for a while
I'm fine with how they pay me I weld everyday I dont weld to get rich I weld because I enjoy it trust me I'm not hurting at all by doing that
@@mattfogarty8144 if it's good for you that's all that matters.
Ridin the fuckin gravy train today bud
💯
Brother, you are bad ass on the buzz box! There is no arguing that! But why on earth would you ever do a job like that with anything but a wire feed? A Lincoln 110 wire feed is 700 bucks with argon and would make those small jobs soooooo much cleaner and easier!! anyway, that's my thought, but all in all you are a welding ninja! I'll give you that!!
Dragging a mig machine with me or stringing out two leads to get it done.... I'll drag the leads all days
