Yeah this tutorial will work but its too much work at least for me it is.Someone elses comment was a tad rude but correct on the right procedure but its all personal opinion. I would go with the later model bypass cover and factory style pump with just two hoses simple to me. I mean your video is informative and neat to watch.I guess if your doing a one shot deal only its Okay this method. Next time you might want to add more water you look a little low also. I know this video is a year old but anyway next time. Im a Classic Evinrude & Johnson 50s motor collector and mechanic for many years ever need parts let me know.....

      Glen! I have a 1950 4438 fastwi6n and I don't think it has bypass covers at all

Joshua, I'm sorry I disagree with your assumption that the pressure fuel tank system was a bomb waiting to happen. But, to be fair, there are published opinions that have circulated on the internet for over 10 years. One that comes to mind is a Ducksworth article. Everyone is entitled there opinion and I respect that.
The pressurized tanks that came with the 1950's motors worked very well. They have a pressure release valve that maintains a certain pressure and the system worked well. The stories that surfaced of exploding tanks was hype. There were no differences in fire issues than than of fuel pump system.
The real reason pressure tank system were phased out, because it was cheaper to add a fuel pump than supplying a reinforced metal tank with each outboard they sold. Yes, they supplied a tank with each outboard they sold, so that was an extra cost to the company.
So, the real reason the tanks were phased out was to increase profit by not having to supply a metal tank. Once the the fuel pump was introduced, it was the customer's burden to purchase a tank.
There are still pressure tanks out there and still being used. I have 3 of them. They are getting a little harder to find and there is the expensive 2 prong pressure female connector that goes to the motor.

Thanks for the comment! That's a very valid reasoning for phasing out the fuel tanks. Valid enough for me to change my stance on it! lol So, thank you for educating me! Knowledge is power! But no matter what the reasoning for phasing the metal tanks, if you come across an engine that was built for a pressurized fuel tank and want to convert it, I guarantee this way works!

I have no issues with your conversion method. I was just reviewing the reason why pressure tanks phased out.
Have fun on the water my friend and enjoy the smell of two stroke in air.....lol

Lower cost as well, not to simply increase profit....markets are competitive

Joshua Moore I’ve been working on OMC motors for years and not once have I heard of a tank exploding ! The other gentleman was partial correct and the other part is Mercury lobbied against the pressure tanks because of sales , if you bought a new Mercury you needed a new tank but if you bought a new OMC you could use your old tank then kiekoffer went on a big sale if you traded in a Johnson or Evinrude! Mercury never played by the rules ! But you have a nice video , I had my grandson watch it and he learned a lot !

I have the pressurized tank but much easier to be able to grab any tank with omc fittings......makes bumming gas a snap too! lol
