That honestly blew my mind, never noticed the similarity to Opeth's playing style and I love that song, was always my favourite Metallica instrumental even though Orion and Ktulu were more popular
I miss this Opeth. Even just the fact they were in smaller clubs. They lost me around Watershed but I wish them all the best. Mike is happy writing the music he wants to write and that's the way it should be, fuck the haters.
They played 'Deliverance' next, final track of the evening. I loved how the power went out, pitch black for 15 minutes, there was no music for 5 mins then Opeth decided to continue playing - in the dark! They were flawless even in the dark...
sounds like a memorable atmospheric experience! mikael has said in interviews that during the morningrise period they used to rehearse in the dark for “pretentious black metal reasons” so they were prepared for that blackout!
This guy is fuckin' awesome, i had the opportunity to meet him when they were in Montevideo, Uruguay. I had the idea of give him an LP from a well known uruguayan progressive-rock band, called Psiglo (of whom Mikael was already a fan, btw). The buddy felt charmed with the disc, hope he have had time to listen it appropiately, think he deserved the gift since he has left me so much music along those years :)
The first:"smoke on the water" by deep purple The second:"paranoid" by black sabbath The third:"To Live Is To Die" by metallica The forth:"Knocking At Your Back Door" by deep purple fifth and last:"welcome to the jungle" by guns'n'roses Thnx
Yeah, Mikael is a huge metallica fan. And that song was cowritten and essentially a tribute to burton. I remember hearing it at very young age, and it hit me pretty hard.
One of the greatest bands ever covering some of the greatest songs ever written by some of the other greatest bands ever. This might just be the greatest video ever.
Wow, im a HUGE opeth fan and have been a HUGE metallica fan since the day i was born (parents are also fans) and fell in love with that clean guitar part of To Live is to Die so many years back... it means SOOOOOOO MUCH to me to hear that Mikael also appreciates it like i do... just wow.
I felt so good when I heard him say "Opeth wouldn't be around if it wasn't for To Live is to Die" because the same is true for me. I mean I probably wouldn't appreciate Opeth as much as I do now if I had never heard that song to begin with.
Metallica, whether you like them or not, are the biggest metal band of all time, and because of that, they've influenced pretty much every big rock band from the 80s onwards
Justice and MOP albums influenced many prog musicians I think. Both are complex and long albums and I don't think they are thrash metal, they are 70% prog to me
AJFA is definitely more on the thrash side than MOP. Death Magnetic and Hardwired picked up the sound of their first 2 albums more than MOP and AJFA but they are still thrash metal. The black album is more mainstream, load and reload are experimental, and St. Anger is basically Metallica's therapy session, and it shows.
Mickael is a fuckin legend! I saw Opeth in Manchester and he made the concert so much fun with his little anecdotes and guess the riff game! Its nice to see a band that fucking rocks and has fun at the same time!
I love the style in which Mikael plays the clean riff of To Live Is To Die, and gives his own spin on it. Makes it sound like a completely different and elevated version of the already beloved riff.
thank u so fuwken much.. i've been hearin the part when he says the title over n over again n i had no idea =p... till now.. thanx hehe mikael is the shit n he plays that part so beatiful..
I come back to this video sometimes to hear Mikael play To Live Is To Die. He plays it with Opeth rendition and it’s the best version of that piece of the song I’ve ever heard.
Yeah yeah, he did, he did. You know we went over all of this years ago in here when people commented like "LOL HE SAID BLACK SABBATH WHAT A IDIOT! etc. He said it to joke around because everyone knows it's one of the most recognizeable songs ever, and everyone knows it's by Deep Purple.
@martyr13666999 Yeah. The last riff here is the first riff in Deliverance. It's not in the album, but they play it live in this video: th-cam.com/video/gHyLcqrBdA8/w-d-xo.html at 1:43.
Haha, I find all of this debate about whether or not he was joking rather amusing. I definitely didn't forsee such a little thing cuasing so much of a fuss before uploading the video :P For the record, I think it was a slip up. As awesome as he is, he's still only human.
Opeth are amazing i have to say i didnt expect him to be the light hearted humerous type i expected him to be the brooding depressive type with this knoledge i wanna see em even more than i did cause they seem like good fun
@@metallicaandjustice1 Damn, this is the first im witnessing someone comment again after 14years and that too with the same username. What a time to be alive. How were these 14 years bro, please enlighten us.
My favorite song from MetallicA, from the "...And Justice For All" album, we miss you Cliff Burton.. The song is a tribute to Cliff, he made som of the riff's before he died in.. Sweden, where does Opeth come from? Sweden! It's a Conspiracy i tell you!!
i saw that same bit live myself. in hartford in feb. played queen inuendo and lots of judus priest he even sang freddy vocals in inuendo. well enough of my fuckin drunk banter. opeth is "fuckin evil"
"That's right, 'To Live Is To Die' by: Metallica... And if it wasn't for that lick, Opeth would not be around.
Let that sink in for a second
That's bullshit tho. Opeth would be around.
That honestly blew my mind, never noticed the similarity to Opeth's playing style and I love that song, was always my favourite Metallica instrumental even though Orion and Ktulu were more popular
>That's bullshit tho. Opeth would be around.
Lol I think Akerfeldt knows what he's talking about than some random jackass like you.
Yeah when he played it, actually sounded like it could have been his own.
@@TheAskald I don't think you understand how much one single song or lick can infuence a person.
"Smoke on the water by black sabbath" Lawl.
I was expecting "Paranoid, by Deep Purple" for the next..
To live is to die really is a beautiful song
He interacts so much with his fans, that's why i love Opeth ♥
Man I loved when he played the riff from "To Live is to Die".
And He played it a bit differently than the original. He is very intelligent
the song they were gonna start playing was DELIVERANCE
Akerfeldt playing Metallica
"If it wasn't for this lick, Opeth yould not be around." Wohoo, what a statement.
"smoke on the water from black sabbath" please mikael, do stand-up
I believe it was a joke, kinda hoping he'd say "Paranoid. by deep purple" but he didn't :
Clearly a joke. That guy knows his purple inside and out
"to live is to die if it wasn't for that riff, opeth will not be around...beautiful"
he said it all :D

They were prolly better in the dark
I bet it gave them more power
Darkness imprisoning me…

To Live is To Die is one of the greatest instrumental piece in imo
"I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT METAL"

O M F G!
To Live is to Die = Opeth! never imagined that
Very nice guy. I met him in Montevideo, was very kind
" Man I loved when he played the riff from "To Live is to Die". "

Watching this is like being drunk at the show, but I don't have to worry about a hangover.

Wow. Didn't realize Metallica had that much of an influence on Opeth.
Metallica, whether you like them or not, are the biggest metal band of all time, and because of that, they've influenced pretty much every big rock band from the 80s onwards
To live is to die in certain parts sounds exactly like an Opeth song so this makes a lot of sense
Justice and MOP albums influenced many prog musicians I think. Both are complex and long albums and I don't think they are thrash metal, they are 70% prog to me

funny! to live is to die was my big favourite from metallica back when I didn't even know about Opeth. Now Opeth is my top favourite band.
I love the style in which Mikael plays the clean riff of To Live Is To Die, and gives his own spin on it. Makes it sound like a completely different and elevated version of the already beloved riff.
That was not by Guns N' Roses, I wrote that riff in 1984!
So cool! I never heard the similarity before...
I love these guys, so hilarious, so freaking talented. i hope they stay together.
