Yes, since they are resistant to Dark Magic. It is clear he stopped the series because the Four Kings cannot be defeated in one-hit without massive cheese. Dark Bead doesn't take them past 50% health, so not really the I win spell that he makes it out to be.
Sorry guys I've been busy and sort of lost interest after I realized finishing the challenge would be trivial. My main goal was to create a fun challenge for others to try and it seems a lot have actually completed it. I may come back to it at some point, but I need a break from TH-cam. My buddies at work and I decided to start up another D&D campaign and I've decided to give being the DM a shot so I've spent the last couple of weeks preparing.
I believe I have watched your every video now. I’d like to thank you for the thorough entertainment you’ve provided me. You’re an excellent gamer, and your commentary, audio and editing choices were very fitting and thoroughly enjoyable. Whilst a bit too late to expect this little comment to reach you, I’d like nonetheless to express my gratitude to you for providing such high quality content. Wishing you all the best :)
he stop posting this because after artorias you get access to a very powerfull spell cald dark bead and whit tha you can easily one shot almost all the bosses so it ruins the challenge
I gotta say man, I find your videos SO much more enjoyable when you have commentary. I find that your commentary is generally really informative and just relaxing to listen to. Keep on keeping on!
Also a Factotum with a dip into swordsage at the right levels to grab a few maneuvers and stances is a great choice. A level 5 dip gets you level 2 maneuvers and stances, waiting till level 7 gives you level 3. Get assassin's stance and/or child of shadow and you have a character that is better than a rogue of the same level.
Just finished my first playthrough of Dark Souls a few minutes ago. Three ripostes with the Hornet Ring and Gwyn was destroyed. I've watched a ton of your stuff, and I just wanted to say thanks for all the pro tips you share with us. DS was a journey, not to mention one of the most stressful, difficult games I've ever played. I think I'm done with it for a while, at least until DS2... Looking forward to more of your vids.
I'd say for someone who doesn't understand the 3.5 ruleset that it'd be plenty hard but for someone familiar with it then the challenge is what you make of it. You're allowed to start with a party of 5 and have some NPC's join, however I just made a trio and am running through it with that. Cool thing is it's a major strategy game. Improved trip, combat expertise, metamagic, grease, flanking, etc.. all works so you can really focus on it. It's borked by default but the Co8 mod fixes all of it.
TO = total optimization or sometimes referred to as CO, complete optimization. Means pushing the rules to their limits, often taking advantage how a rule is written even if it seems ridiculous. PO = practical optimization. Meaning to optimize in a manner that adheres strongly to the the rules as intended. None of your build relies on shaky ground rulings that would make the DM throw a book at you. ToB = Tome of battle, a book that basically gives melee characters their own form of magic.
Docking points for failing to one-shot minibosses wouldn't really make any sense though, since if there's no reward for them and only potential loss, people would just never kill them. Or if it's mandatory, leave them for as late as possible.
I know it’s like 3 years later, but I just discovered this video series. Personally, rather than docking points, I feel perhaps just limit miniboss points to one per miniboss type. After all there’s very little point to one-shotting your second Armored Boar or Golden Crystal Golem once you’ve proven your ability to kill them in one hit on your first encounter. This would limit the points more also follows in the spirit of the rule that bosses who later appear as regular enemies don’t add points when you kill the regular enemy version. I think the first kill is the only kill that gives points.
I was thinking about making a single video on Temple of Elemental Evil for d&d fans who may have missed it. It's not as flashy or popular as NWN was, but it's very faithful to the material it was created from. It's close enough to the actual rules that you can use it to teach yourself a lot about the game. Unfortunately it was buggy as hell but the Circle of Eight mods fix this issue and added a ton of content to boot. I'd recommend it for anyone who wants a tactical and atmospheric RPG to play
I'm glad to hear you're doing what you want to do with your life Vageta311. I'll be happy to watch any videos you produce in the future but for now I'll wait patiently.
For those used to using splat books it may be a bit limited, but the good part is the rules are for the most part translated well. NWN2 with some of the mods replicates a large portion of the splat books, including PrC classes, but none of it matters all that much because it's not a true turn based game so certain aspects of the rules just don't work. ToEE is core only but it gives a much closer experience to a PnP game.
Yes, but only because of the 2 hit clause. Some bosses require those lava pools to be killed in one attack, but could easily be killed with a 2nd attack.
Not officially but I'm aware of it in general. It's basically 3.5 with some changes though I've heard mixed reviews about if it ends up being better or worse. It's pretty popular right now, though a lot of people play with their own custom house rules in order to balance/fix their 3.5 game so to them PF probably isn't necessary.
dude, u should be hired by bandai namco to be part of the new dark souls 2 gamer critique... u no normal dude no more, an expert who should help inventing big time games of a year genre. very respectful
Exactly. Sticking to core only to "keep out the cheese" actually makes the power gap worse. Clerics, Wizzies and especially Druids have enough power in core to break a campaign already, while the other classes need to take things from splat books in order to even stay somewhat relevant. We're doing a rotating DM game so the story will go in crazy places. I got some funny looks our first night when my Level 3 spirit lion totem, whirling frenzy Barb 1/Ranger 2 killed an Ogre in one round.
You need chaos storm, and for that you have to kill Quelaag. The remaining lava pools is what is able to do more damage than just the fire pillars themselves. That's specifically why I waited until after Quelaag to do that kill.
Probably not, speculation isn't my thing. I'm sure there are a ton of others already doing it. My niche is to show the possibilities of the game when you reach a certain level of skill which is what I plan on doing.
Yep I fell in love with ToB and is probably the only 3.5 book that I've read cover to cover in it's entirety. I love the idea behind Swordsages but my favorite build is a mix of both Swordsage and Warblade. They have pretty good symmetry if used correctly. Sadly I've never been able to play high enough to shout out "Five-Shadow Creeping Ice Enervating Strike!"
I reassured them that in a couple levels their Cleric and Wiz/Rogue would be outshining me on a regular basis. They're not optimizers persay, but you don't really have to be with a tier 1 class and choose the right spells. For some DM's that only do low level games it usually appears that melee is stronger, but once you hit about level 6 it changes rapidly and by 4th level spells it's not even close anymore.
The Tome of Battle gives characters maneuvers and stances which are kind of like magic but when used properly turn a melee character into a boss. To give you an idea there is a maneuver the shadow hand path can get in the ToB which allows them to teleport 50ft through shadows as a swift action allowing them to full attack and it doesn't provoke. There are also some maneuvers that if you use them you're probably going to kill the person either with damage or special effects.
Just wanted to say Vageta, you're an amazing commentator and definitely very good at both Dark Souls and Demon Souls. I love all of your content and I believe you deserve a lot more in the way of subscribers. I've seen plenty of other TH-camrs that have around 20 times or more subscribers, but the content they deliver is mediocre at best. Not trying to put down other TH-camrs, just trying to make a point that you are definitely a very excellent commentator and I love your videos. Keep it up.
It's in dungeonscape. All skills as class skills, d8 HD and his class features all revolve around intelligence. He doesn't get sneak attack persay, however he can emulate it by burning inspiration points. He get's to cast spells and do all other cool things, but it relies on a player knowing the game well. I played a swordsage in our previous campaign who used a spiked chain(shadow hand weapon). Due to his relative power the group said no ToB this game.. Made me a sad panda.
Hey man! I just discovered your channel and I am amazed how awesome at Dark Souls you are. As the others stated dont give up! You helped to improve my gameplay big time and it would be a shame if you’d stop doing your videos. I’m sure there are tons of new players that my appreciate your efforts to help them understand this awesome game (including myself).
I like to optimize because the more things your character can do the funner it is to play. It's no different than slaving over your 120 dark souls build trying to get it just perfect. I'd love to play with a group that is ok with optimizing. So long as the group is somewhat balanced the DM can throw tougher stuff at you to combat the groups power. Having a mix of high and low op makes it hard for the DM to challenge the optimized guys while not murdering the others.
i love the video and the series man, i also tried to do this at home, but idk....i don't see using chaos storm, fire tempest and other multiples spells as one shot, but it's your rules and of course, i respect this...great job vageta =)
No worries, dude, do your thing, I watch a lot of your videos and rather enjoy the way you approach them. I don't know who's hating on you or whatever, just do your thing! Until you return!
I only started playing a couple years ago on a whim. I was out drinking with a bunch of guys from work and we started talking about video games, specifically RPG's. I mentioned that I had always loved the lore and art from D&D but never had a chance to play it and 3 of the guys got fired up and instantly demanded that we start playing. It just took off from there.
My streamers and I figured out that it is in fact mathematically possible to take out Manus with Fire Tempest, You need to hit manus 3 times with it, and one of the hits needs to be a counter. But it has proven extremely difficult so far.
Factotum. Hands down. I enjoy skill monkeys and the standard rogue in 3.5 is underpowered, as is most melee classes. Factotum is everything the rogue should have been and is truly a class that can be useful in every situation. I view the Factotum basically as Indiana Jones in that his main class feature is "inspiration" and being able to apply his wits to gain an advantage in any situation. 2nd place would be Swordsage from Tome of Battle which is basically an anime character on steroids.
D&D 3.5e has a ton of classes, feats, rules, races, etc.. So optimizing means combining them in a way to provide synergy to a build. Instead of haphazardly throwing together a character, you instead carefully choose options to make everything synergize and take advantage of the rule system, which at times can be a bit convoluted. It's the same as spending hours contemplating your next Dark Souls build, except imagine that on a scale 1000x greater spanning 40+ rule books, 1000's of feats, etc..
The point was that most DM's expect magic users to take out strong enemies but seem to question a non-magic users' ability to do so, which is sort of the crux of the problem. "Melee's can't have nice things" but it's just expected of a mage. He had seen our unoptimized group struggle to take on Ogre's before so he was just unprepared for my level 3 character to solo a pair of them without taking any damage. Ogre's are CR 3 so a pair should be more than a level 3 can handle, at least he thought.
Well then I patiently await the release of Dark Souls II ! Not only because I'm sure it'll be a new spin on an excellent series, but because it means (hopefully) we'll see you release some bitchin' new content ! Hope all is well man !
It's bugged. Just login and sit in that area for at least 10 minutes without dying and they should eventually go away on their own. Literally sit there, don't run around to other areas or anything just stay in the one that's infected and wait it out. Whenever you die or enter another area the timer resets.
Nothing like watching Vageta311's videos after a long and infuriating recording session of playing this with mouse and keyboard to wind down and relax. Also while eating ice cream. Go me!
Well, that's your choice and we (at least me) respect that. I woul really love to watch a session of D&D coming from. Mainly if it is using the Dark Souls World and Lore with the D&D system! XD Anyway. Your vids really helped me while i was a n00b in DS, so thanks for doing what you do. :)
Funny thing was he hated my level 4 Dragonfire Adept even more after I single-handedly fought off a pair of Ogres when he had assumed we would run away. He was originally against ToB but agreed to the Swordsage if only to get rid of my beastly Strongheart Halfing DFA who rode off into the sunset with his middle finger held high. I still to this day threaten to bring him back lol.
Best Dark Souls vids on the internet. I let your playlists run on my laptop while I sleep in hopes that your wisdom will become permanently burned into my brain 5ever. Is that weird?
I'm all about PO, not TO to the point of creating pun-pun. I don't even like bending the rules, just being able to use whatever legitimate synergy I can come up with. Last campaign I had a spiked chain, shadow hand Swordsage that was in a full set of magic gear at level 5 due to being the sole survivor of a near TPK. The DM silently hated my character even though I was just playing him intelligently and had not made any bad choices with feats, stats, maneuvers, etc..
Next seems an improvement over 4.0 as it went backwards, but it's too early to tell. As far as a video on d&d rules, unlikely. However I fired up ToEE the other night with the latest Co8 patch and was having some fun again. This game seems to capture 3.5 rules and tactics much closer than NWN or the others as it's truly turn based. Unfortunately it's core only, but it's still fun nonetheless play a game where the rules are fairly strictly adhered too and you can pull off some wicked tactics.
True, it's just a suggestion on my part. But it still constraints your points from them and your ability to abuse mini-bosses for quick leveling and stat gain. The problem still remains with out-leveling albeit failures. Say I accumulate -10 points, I have lost points simply because I chose a wrong build/strat. If I change that, I will not be able to redo the parts I failed and I'll need to restart everything. Somehow negative points don't feel right from my experience of this game.
I will have to remember that and test it out sometime. Sadly my group has had some dm troubles and so we haven't been able to stick with a campaign for too long but the last one we had was in a d20 warhammer 40k game my friend made my char and a friends became gods and could nearly one shot any enemy, I may have to see some of your low level builds some time they sound amazing. I haven't been playing for a real long time so I'm still learning all the ins and outs of characters.
Pro tip for the Sanctuary Guardian: If you get hit by his stunning breath attack or whatever that is that you dodged at the start, he always does the headbutt attack and you can dodge it every single time. So whenever he does that it's basically free damage.
Intelligence, the magic adjustment of your catalyst, bellowing dragoncrest ring, any global damage buffs such as power within/red tearstone/dragon armor roar. Dusk Crown does as well I think.
Great stuff! It's almost funny to think of the troubles I had before with some of these bosses, and now watching how they can be completely destroyed :D Btw. quitting out before the Seath fight...just to get rid of the "clams" or do you achieve something else by doing it?
Now, I haven't watched all the videos yet, but, from experience, I can assume that the Four Kings give him no trouble at all. I've done 3000-3500 damage with 50 INT, Tin Cry Cat, Dark Bead, Power Within and the Bellowing Drag. All of that added up to a two-shot. Adding the Tearstone on top of that will create true carnage.
Hey Vageta I was wondering if you could do 1 final walkthrough for us with like a strength build or a RP build or something I've watched ur EPBTG and calamity ring challenge playthroughs at least 5 times each and no lol they aren't getting boring I'd just love to see 1 more walkthrough w/ commentary of you beating gwyn 1 last time.
The crown and the bellowing dragoncrest ring boost magic madly. But the most important is to use the right catalyst. Google "magic adjustment dark souls wikispaces" to know which catalyst matches with your level of INT. And yeah, more INT = more damage, but only if you use the right catalyst.
I'm not sure if you've caught this. Haven't been watching these to avoid spoilers (trying to find my own methods). But the Berenike knights are listed as minibosses on the wiki, just as "Heavy Knights"
You don't have to save dusk for the one in the Dukes' Archives staring at the globe, all you have to do is have Artorias of the Abyss Dlc. The one in the forest that drops the girl in armor, you have to help Siegmeyer on his quest for that golem to show up.
Exactly. But the real problem is unoptimized parties. As you've noticed, they really can't handle... anything. It's harder to find a fight that won't just kill them than it is to find one that challenges optimized Tier 1 parties. The payoff is lower as well - Team Pro gets an encounter with a ton of mechanical, strategical, and tactical depth and Team Noob gets an R1 fest.
If it's worth anything, I agree wholly with vageta. I'm currently played a PF campaign, and after having played a large amount of 4.0, I can definitely opine that 3.5/PF are superior in most ways.
"ill see you next time" *doesn't come back*
sounds like my father
Jeeze.
Who are u, Afro?
Like it you're still waiting for part 6 in 2015
foreal :(
+Karim Shoaib Soon to be 2016 :(
+Karim Shoaib 2016...
+Jake Thornton its 2k16
2024.
Five* years later part 6 forever lost
sad, i want to watch it...
Same with the SL3 Sorcerer playthrough. Still waiting... but I think Half-Life 3 will be announced first.
So sad that this ended with a cliff hanger. Such a great series!
Since he's going forthe dark beed, mostly he'll just be using till the end, especially for fire resistance bosses
clearly the four kings were too hard for him
Lol nice, I hope Vageta311 reads this, it'll spark his competitive nature ;)
Yes, since they are resistant to Dark Magic. It is clear he stopped the series because the Four Kings cannot be defeated in one-hit without massive cheese. Dark Bead doesn't take them past 50% health, so not really the I win spell that he makes it out to be.
Good god... you ducked into your chaos storm right as Artori was going to behead you with that cleave strike! Props to you man!
It is 2019. I am still waiting for part 6.
2023 still waiting
@chindianajones3742 how did he do 4 kings!?
Eternal question.

One shotting the gaping dragons face was epic/hilarious. nice job.
3 years later and still nothing. That bastard.
I believe I have watched your every video now.

You’re an excellent gamer, and your commentary, audio and editing choices were very fitting and thoroughly enjoyable. Whilst a bit too late to expect this little comment to reach you, I’d like nonetheless to express my gratitude to you for providing such high quality content. Wishing you all the best :)
Man you should really finish this was watching for the past hour or so now. PLEASE!
Rules of challenge when you can no longer one or two shot the remaining bosses its gg
True point bro, thanks!
he stop posting this because after artorias you get access to a very powerfull spell cald dark bead and whit tha you can easily one shot almost all the bosses so it ruins the challenge
I gotta say man, I find your videos SO much more enjoyable when you have commentary.
I find that your commentary is generally really informative and just relaxing to listen to.
Keep on keeping on!
Part 6?
Just want to say how much I appreciate your videos Vageta, well structured, informative and very entertaining!
You made the best Pyro Ive ever seen and you do this on top of a challenge point system. Much respect man.
It has been 87 years...
Definitely the best dark souls commentator around, love all your vids! Keep up the good work!

Very cool. The fact that you did the DLC as well is icing on the cake.
Love your stuff man, hopefully we see some new content soon... You are a fantastic asset to the Dark Souls community!

dude where is part 6?
im sorry jeff, this is the last part :'(
To get rid of the clams, otherwise they follow you in and make it more difficult. Once the fog wall is up you don't have to worry about them anymore.
ah Vegeta you don't have to be better than Goku at everything. we just love watching you play games and talking
Hope you are still alive, because i really do love your work. Every video is better than the precedent!

The DLC Crystal Golem at the beginning of the Duke's Archives respawns?

I view the Factotum basically as Indiana Jones in that his main class feature is "inspiration" and being able to apply his wits to gain an advantage in any situation.
2nd place would be Swordsage from Tome of Battle which is basically an anime character on steroids.
lol at how he kills sieglinde along with the golem
Damn Vegeta, you've earned a new sub with this awesome challenge.
Go me!
please make part 6
hoping to see you come back with more!
Well, that's your choice and we (at least me) respect that.
I woul really love to watch a session of D&D coming from. Mainly if it is using the Dark Souls World and Lore with the D&D system! XD
Anyway. Your vids really helped me while i was a n00b in DS, so thanks for doing what you do. :)
I just didn't care. The firestorm was overkill but I was too lazy to tone it down to find the minimum required to do it in one hit.
Symbol of Avarice is a pretty good way to reliably take down your health to the level you need
The problem with that is as you mentioned, core only limits you to a few casters and that's it. Which is what I was getting at.
Thank you for helping me get into the Souls series!
Can't wait for the next video! When will you release it?
Pro tip for the Sanctuary Guardian: If you get hit by his stunning breath attack or whatever that is that you dodged at the start, he always does the headbutt attack and you can dodge it every single time. So whenever he does that it's basically free damage.
Please make part 6 this challenge was awesome
Intelligence, the magic adjustment of your catalyst, bellowing dragoncrest ring, any global damage buffs such as power within/red tearstone/dragon armor roar. Dusk Crown does as well I think.
Yes this is on PC. I haven't fired up my Xbox version since the PC version was released.
Possible, depends on his resistance to fire. Same goes for Manus.
This is such a cool challenge. I've been watching you and akabane101 do it!
Great stuff! It's almost funny to think of the troubles I had before with some of these bosses, and now watching how they can be completely destroyed :D
Btw. quitting out before the Seath fight...just to get rid of the "clams" or do you achieve something else by doing it?
Excellent videos Vageta. Keep up the good work :) I'm trying to do some one shot boss kills of my own now that I have seen your videos.
Absolutely fantastic. Can't believe you one-shot Artorias.
Great challenge, would love to see you do a spirit of Streetfighter 'Balrog' or Vega challenge using the caestus or claws!
Is that all? I want to see more so badly!
If it's worth anything, I agree wholly with vageta.
I'm currently played a PF campaign, and after having played a large amount of 4.0, I can definitely opine that 3.5/PF are superior in most ways.
