I saw these 3 in 1982 at Cleveland’s Front Row Theater-which featured a stage that slowly rotated 360 degrees-so everyone had a chance to have the guitarists facing them directly. Saw Miles Davis there in the same year. What fantastic performances and priceless memories. Oh to be 19 again. ❤️👍🏼

Think I've listened to this version so much that I literally learnt to sing in my mind each improvised solo...so sad to hear that Chick just passed away...but his legacy still going on.
I learnt so much through his music, thanks to my grandad that left me his vinyls of Al Di Meola and Return To Forever when he passed away... music is always a connection, and its power is infinite and timeless

@PianoCussoSFHA ----- q al di meola o john no usen los dedos p puntear no significa q sean malos con la viola, al contrario, paco es el mejor guitarrista del mundo pero no te olvides q desde el año 76 él aprendio a improvisar con lo q le enseñaba john mcaughlin, por ahi no lo sabias, mira el documental de paco y ahi te vas a enterar, no hablemos mal si no sabemos,y no lo hace mejor o peor por tocar sin pua, son técnicas q uno utiliza al aprender a ejecutar la guitarra, ópta por usar pua o no...

McLaughlin is the very progenitor of this style of playing, with Di Meola following, after an interval of two years at the most; De Lucia is playing in the virtuosic tradition of Segovia and Montoya (especially Montoya), but his solo indicates that he is thoroughly conversant with the work of those with whom he plays.
This is the kind of performance that makes many guitar players want to sell their instruments, and inspires a special few to want to practice more.
They're all magnificent, although De Lucia seems in control, and regal...
...and it is a revelation, and a validation, to see how well, how propulsively, these three astonishing improvising soloists can play "rhythm" guitar.

He's playing a classical guitar, and he's using classical technique to do so.

@@tuxguys he is not playing a classical guitar and he is not using classical technique--or at least not technique segovia would call classical, and a bunch of techniques not found anywhere but flamenco. They both have nylon strings, yes. both use their fingers to play those strings, and there is some overlap in technique insofar as the human hand is only capable of accomplishing sounds in so many ways.
the time signatures (compas) Paco uses (when he's not playing with white guys) are not classical, half the right hand stuff isn't, the chord progressions are undeniably Spanish, the left hand playing and slurs are nowhere to be found in Segovias music or classic in general.
so he's right. Paco doesn't play classical, or all three guys do.
