- This is Part 2 of a three part video series on "How to Paint the Red Hibiscus in Watercolor." In this video I demonstrate how to paint this beautiful flower using transparent watercolor painting techniques. My instructions are easy to follow, and very detailed. This video is packed with useful watercolor information and painting tips, and in it I discuss and demonstrate every aspect of the paintings development. Each part of this painting series is approximately thirty minutes long. Part 1 introduces the initial stages of the painting's development. Topics discussed range from techniques used to apply washes of color, color mixing, masking techniques and paper preparation. Part 2 is devoted to the overall development of the painting. In this part you will see how I control washes of color to achieve desired results. You will learn how to control "wet into wet,", and how to effectively interpret your subject matter. Part 3 brings the painting to completion. In this section you will see how I develop the background for the painting, and how I work with my paints to create specific results. You can learn more about my paintings by visiting www.rossbarbera...
So glad that you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching!
Wonderful watercolor video explaining your painting technique. Your instruction is really great, I hope you make more of these :)))))))))))))))))))))
Sorry I could not respond sooner - there was an issue with comments that has just been fixed! Thanks for your very kind feedback and for watching my video!
Ross, I so enjoyed your painting Hibiscus tutorials and look forward to any more you put on TH-cam. Your ease in teaching is evident. I worked with you throughout the tutorial and produced a darn good painting thanks to your tehcniques! I have taken other watercolor classes with some very good and "bad" teachers. I rank you up there with the best! Thanks again!
Becca
Such a wonderful tutorial... have never seen any illustration, so descriptive, so creative and full of innovative techniques. I had taken water coloring for granted, thinking it was just water and color... never imagined it to be so manipulative...and the final result...mind blowing...
Thank you so much for your comments! I do offer local workshops periodically, but in the near future I plan to release several more videos for watercolor painting. I'll announce these on my blog and in my newsletters. I hope you have a chance to watch them!
Thank you for your kind feedback! I do have more watercolor painting videos planned. I hope you will have time to watch!

I have been using Winsor & Newton watercolors for many years. Thanks for watching!
I tried it out after watching your third video and it worked great! Thank you so much. I learned a lot of tricks to water coloring and tried this ate home and it was a huge success .
It's Wonderful ... great job with the watercolor!
Hi Nikki, if you follow the wetting instructions in the video, the paper should stay relatively flat. I do use Arches 140 lb watercolor paper, which gives me the best results. I plan to post a blog article about this subject, so please check there in the future for more detailed information! Thanks for watching!
No I did not make the application bottle, but it is available on line - I believe Beachcombers has a set available with the tips included. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for recording AND sharing these videos. We are learning a lot and enjoying them a lot. The kindest regards from Barcelona!
I am using Arches 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper. You may also need to thoroughly soak the paper before you attempt to tape it down. Thanks for watching!
I used Arches 140 lb cold press watercolor paper, which you can get at any good art supply store. Utrechtart on line carries it if you want to take a look at what is available. Good luck! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching my series. I do plan on uploading another series soon - hope you have a chance to watch!
That's right, Marcia. The watercolor paint, when dry, creates a thin line which I use to indicate a vein. The more you practice these techniques, the more comfortable you will be with the process! Thanks for watching and enjoy the project!
Hi - I sell through galleries, but do sell directly as well. If you would like to see some of my other paintings - some acrylic and some watercolor - I have photos posted on my painting website entitled "rossbarbera." I believe there is a link for the painting site on my channel page and blog. Thanks for asking and for your kind comments..

I so enjoyed this. I'm from Vermont and a huge Bernie Sanders fan. If I didn't know better I would think you were him. You sound just like him! I can't wait to try these great techniques for myself. I look forward to more of your wonderful videos. Thanks so much.

Where did u get the metal nozzle for your little water bottle?
Such a great technique to apply water with.
Peace & Love

Hi Kat, I buy mine from 2 different places. On Amazon search for henna bottles. They usually come with a supply of different size needles. Lately I’ve been buying mine from an online jewelry shop “Contenti.” At contenti, do a search for “Squeeze Bottle Dispenser with needle tiplets,” and the item # is 510-638.
What a great lesson. so much to learn for beginner like me.
Thanks very much for the video.
Hi Hakim, Glad that my video was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much Ross for your videos. You are very inspiring and a great teacher. I had a little problem with the veins in the plant and leaves too. I will keep practicing. I painted in oils for 3 years and just recently tried watercolor. My washes seem to turn out dark and intense like oil painting. I really like watercolor and will keep trying.
I use "cakes" for watercolor, but I see you using tube liquids, I might try it! You are an experienced watercolorist! Bravo to you!
Oh... last but certainly not least, you are blessed with great talent... thank you for taking the time to share. g
Ok ... I have tried your methods and I love it . Awesome results Thanks again Ross .
Thank you! Love your technique. Appreciate sharing with us.
Also I saw a lot of enquiry of the squirt bottle. I use a dropper, now I will use an empty bottle used for storing oil for machines.
Thank you! I like tube colors and have been using them for years. They have a rich, creamy consistency, and are easy to mix. Give them a try and see how you like them! Thanks for watching!
Honestly, I am so impressed. The most important lesson you teach is patience, but I've learned a lot more in technique than I've learned from my teachers. Thank you so much. Do you offer workshops?
Thanks very much for your kind comments!
even being three years on .... I found this and am inspired to get painting.....thank you

I get the bottles at Amazon through a third party called Beachcombers. They are actually henna application bottles, so I would imagine that they would also be available at beauty supply shops. Thanks for watching!

Fahiman Edgu Wonderful! I hope you really enjoy this project and many more to come! -Ross
Haha! I'm working on it! Thanks for watching!
Hi Barb, You are right - practicing certain details on scrap pieces of watercolor paper is an excellent way to master them! Try lightening up your washes in varying degrees and painting each to see what the results are when dry. Playing with watercolors is a great way to become comfortable with them. I hope you enjoy the process of working with this great medium! -Ross
wonderfull for the beginner that I am. the result for a first try is encouraging. Several technics in a ludic way to train. Thanks
Gald my video was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Loved it...:)
I love the demonstrations you provided. Have you painted beaches and sunsets? I want to paint beach scenes with dogs and children...etc. I also like butterflies and the want to paint water scenes that you can see the rocks vividly below the water's surface.
Fantastic videos, you explained so well that as a beguiner I will be able start my first project.
Thank you very much!
That is great news, Jorge - hope you enjoy. Thanks for your feedback! -Ross
enjoying this
That's great! Thanks for your comment!
great job......
Thank you Russ - I appreciate your comment!
Hi - I use masking fluid, which is available at any good art supply store. Utrechtart is a good website that I often go to, but there are many. I also use "henna application bottles," which have the thin applicators that are perfect for watercolor painting. I get them at Amazon, but they are widely available at many sites. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic tutor thank you
Thank you very much for your feedback!
Thank you very much for this post, very clear and very understandable show how to. unlike others like a selfish teach.
I really like your methods thank for help with this delia
Hi Delia, Nice to hear that my methods are helpful! Right now I'm working on another landscape watercolor painting video, but more flowers are coming. Thanks for watching!
never tire of watching your videos. looking forward to trying your painting a hibiscus soon. Could you tell me where you got the tiny bottles with metal tips you use to apply water? thanks for demonstrating. Becky Moreno
May I ask what size paper you usually use for your demonstrations? I also wanted to ask 2 questions about your large paintings in watercolors. Since you paint them vertically, how do you keep the paint from running? And do you use the same techniques on these large paintings. I'm totally and completely mesmerized by this painting. so much to learn
