2:27 that green building is a restaurant that my grandpa built back in the day. He ran it for many many years before selling it. He also worked for the sunshine mine
The old Greasy. I grew up in Wallace an my family used to eat there a ton growing up because it was cheap. I still crave the fries after all these years!
My Step-dad is from Wallace and my Mom worked near there back in the 1950s, you have only scratched the surface on how quirky the town is. They had a working bordello there right downtown that only closed in the late 1980s when they got word the FBI was about to raid the town. They intended to open back up once the feds left, but they stayed for years trying to build a case against the local Sheriff Frank Crnkovich who my Mom's roommate in the 1950s married a few years later. That alone would make an excellent movie, even better than Dante's Peak.
Fun fact: I-90 used to run through the center of town. I grew up in Seattle and on road trips to MT we used to have to get off the highway to drive through Wallace. I remember when that stretch of I-90 was being built! They even gave the only stoplight on the highway a funeral! Great video!
Used also hug the lake at beach left and 4th of July pass was getting rock blasted on the westbound side making it a 2 Lane Highway to Cataldo. Getting through Idaho was the worst. Out of 75 or I-90 it took over two hours sometimes. Like you I was in Montana a lot so you had to just grin and bear I-90.
The entire Silver Valley is beautiful, Wallace, Kellogg, Pinehurst all with in minutes of each gaining big popularity and great trails, skiing silver mountain, mountain biking, ATV , fishing, food, beer, etc. Will be the next hot place to live, Hiawatha bike trail, gondola rides, folks go check it out, real estate is taking off and only 30 minutes to CDA, buy while it's still affordable you won't regret it.
OMG ..... the Nat (Natatorium) Park ROCKET! Growing up in Spokane, if I rode that thing once, I rode it a thousand times! Maybe in that very rocket! Thanks for showing it in your video!
Aww... my Mom was born in Wallace (while my grandpa was a crane operator, back in the ‘50’s). I’ve driven past but never been able to stop. Now I know I need to!!
My wife and I recently stayed in the Coeur d'Alene area and we got to spend an afternoon in Wallace. You two did a great job of capturing its essence in this video. We loved it. I really hope it never loses its quirkiness and 'small town' charm.
It was so cool to see your video!! We stayed in Wallace last summer in their little rv park under the freeway, coolest rv park ever. They have a brewery and great beer, a charming stream and great vibe!! Thanks for the reminders of some great memories!! That was also where the movie Dante's Peak was filmed!! It goes from Plummer across the lake to Harrison and then up the chain lakes (Rose Lake, Medimont……… then up to Cataldo, Enaville and ending in Mullan. The route you posted is Hwy 97 a scenic byway, but not a rails to trail. Love your video anyways. I live in the area
I’ve driven past Wallace a few times. I’ll have to stop in sometimes. I’d love to get your take on Coeur d’Alene. I think it rivals Aspen or Lake Tahoe, but fewer people know about it (thank God).
Hey Matt! Definitely stop into Wallace sometime! And we absolutely love Coeur d'Alene. We were there for about a week last month and didn't want to leave. In fact, it was on our short list of places to move back before we chose Chattanooga. It's such a wonderful town in a beautiful location, Lots to do and friendly people make it a wonderful place!
I’m dying for a taco with a whole lot of meat all of a sudden! I’m not a huge meat eater either but I trust your opinion about the REALLY good tacos! Love that you show small town America!
Wish we could send some of these tacos down to SC for you! :) They're so so good! And we're happy to hear you're enjoying the small towns across America. There are so many wonderful and quaint little places in this country!
OH GREAT!!! *sigh* Now I have another place to put on the bucket list to go see. *grin* Thanks for the quick stop-over and list of things to see and where to grab a bite to eat (tacos!!!). Can't wait to see where you land next. Until next time..... Travel safe.
What a beautiful time of year to be there. We were there and did our video this past Aug but due to the nearby fires we couldn't get any drone footage at the time. We absolutely LOVED Wallace! A small town full of charm and so much to do. In our video we take a tour of the Sierra Silver Mine so if you didn't get a chance to do it be sure to check it out. We heard the area is already getting snow. How long ago did you do this footage? It's great btw. -grace
Oh fun!! we wanted to do the Silver Mine tour but they had just finished them up for the year so we missed it! We filmed this about 2 or 3 weeks ago. It was definitely getting cold then!
LOL! 😆 I grew up there in the 60’s and 70’s graduating in 1979. You can’t get any better than Northern Idaho to grow up in. You spent 4 minutes talking about tacos…I don’t think I could even do that.
Finally made reservations to stay at Wallace RV campground later this summer. Looking forward to trying those tacos at Slab Meat. Will let you know. :)
Wallace is a wonderful place. Sorry you are so shocked to find wonderful surprises in small towns. The world is filled with amazing small towns. Go Wallace!
Trivia: according to IMDB, all the exterior scenes of the movie Dante’s Peak (1997) were shot in Wallace (except the crater scenes shot at Mt St Helens). Kind of cheesy movie but it shows off the town. Safe Journey!
Dante’s Peak…I thought it was a good movie. I have photos from the movie set since family lived there during the filming. Also the movie Heaven’s Gate … which was released then pulled from theaters for more editing was filmed in Wallace…my brother was in that movie (an elegant gentleman) and my dad helped build the set. … it was amazing how they transformed the city.
When you do these videos, I wish you would let us know the month you shot this video. You said it was cool that day. Was is a cool day in summer, spring or fall? A simple month & year would really help.
Something that may or may not have been mentioned, but....Wallace was used as the fictional.town Dante's Peak, in the movie of the same name, with Pierce Brosnan (007) and Linda Hamilton

Thus, if you can't prove otherwise this must be true came about. It's a story the locals love telling. Can't wait to see where you go next. 😁
When I was a kid I saw a picture of Idaho and decided I had to go there. This little town, and how it has embraced its frontier vibe, are being added to the travel map.
Hope you get a chance to get through Coeur d’Alene, Idaho there is some gorgeous areas around that area. I lived there for two years when I worked for the newspaper. If I recall it’s also bald eagle season on the lake so you may be able to get some amazing footage!
We LOVE Coeur D'Alene! We actually hunkered down there for about a week and got some work done. We loved running the trails and hitting up some of the coffee shops while we're there. Such a beautiful town! I wish we had known it was bald eagle season! 😱
Quirky is great. OHMYGOSH those aren't tacos those are more like burritos huge😲 But looks so yummy. Love the crackling fire right next. The center of the universe is a must. Loving the editing and shots:) Best Wishes, James and Kim ❤
My buddy and I drove through Wallace on our way back to Chicago from Portland back in 2016. Stopped at the smokehouse for some BBQ. Lots of people put a $1 bill on the walls there but if you're ever in there look for the $5 by the door with Greg and Phil's names on it! really cool little town
I wonder how many times they have to replace the manhole cover? My friend lives in Wallace and after watching this video I must eat a SlabMeats taco before I die. haha
