I just bought the "Black Cloud Silver Lining" Portnoy color Tama B/B kit and it is truly awesome..been playing a very long time and this kit comes 8, 10, 12, 16, 22 for 1499 at G.C. All other BB kits at 1499 only have 4 shell pack so the added 8" is a bonus and the color is radical but really nice. The sound? warm, deeper shells than regular hyperdrive B/B, more sustain and sound stunning! I had no clue when I bought them the color was Portnoy's.
First heard this guy back in 92. And he’s been the dude ever since. Yeah I listened to Nick Menza, blown away by Neil Peart, John Bonham was a just a angry monster. Vinnie Paul didn’t give a damn. Jai “Johanny Johansson left my jaw wide open. And Buddy Rich is still the GOD. But Portnoy was and still is the core of Dream Theater. Every Dream Theater album this guy was on I kept thinking, what is he gonna come up with next? Dude never disappointed.
Yep happened at a Boston show in early 2002. I was fortunate enough to attend that show. Hell of a drum solo with the 2 of them. Rather odd for me looking back, having seen the guy that was to replace Mike play with Mike on stage. Kinda cool memory there.
Ok, so Mike had Jose as his drum tech here. But, previously when they were touring for Systematic Chaos and a couple other albums, he had another tech. Because Jose was his tech during Scenes From a Memory.
I defiantly see the upside to Mangini, but as you said it's all a matter of taste. For me, Mike is the man. Super nice guy as well. Had the pleasure of meeting him years ago.
@Langtw Thats not the reason mate, he wanted to take a break from the 'DT machine' but they wouldn't give him a break so he pretty much left/got kicked out, he wanted to come back but they didnt want him.
personal preference... but supposedly birch is the "best sounding" for recording purposes because its brighter and can probably be EQed easier. Maple is warmer and best for live situations. If the drums aren't tuned right it doesn't matter. I have a birch kit and it sounds great. I forget alot of what I researched years ago, but that's the gist of it
could anyone tell me please what´s the difference between the materials the drums are made ? wich sounds better , wich is for studio recording and all that stuff i know that i sound like a rookie and i´ve been playing for 8 years :S but i havent known that information
@MrJonzii94 I do the exact same thing. I don't even like playing on other people's sets most of the time, simply because I have my pedals and cymbals set up a certain way.
I think it is the same drumtech he's been using for several years ( asian). He just got longer hair now:-) Look at their older videos, he's the guy who swings Mike's microphone back and forth under vocal parts.
@MrJonzii94 Haha, yeah. It probably takes like 7 people to set it up in a reasonable amount of time. Moving my 4-shell kit is already enough of a pain without adding 200 more toms to it (Plus a xylophone).
@outlaw6066, i have a DW collector's kit 5-piece, and a Tama StarClassic Bubinga ELITE 9-piece kit, and i gotta say that the elite kit is SOOOOO much better than the DW kit. Not just cuz its alot bigger, but cuz the sound is so amazing. its so tough to even describe the sound. the only reason why he would switch is for money, i can guarentee you that. or if DW decides to actually use bubinga
It amazes me how you non entity's sit here and criticize one of the best drummers in the world, what the fuck can you do behind the drum kit, Portnoy would fuckin smoke you. You guys would criticize Neal Peart as " He's about as good as he'll ever get, get a clue.
lol ive met his tech before!!! the drum store i go to...he plays golf all the time with the owner so its funny to see who he actually is!!! ill remmber this the next time i meet him...
@netorockerg My theory: It really is Myung... He plays bass at night, the rest of the band still does not recognize him, so he eats and eats and eats in his own depression and then the next day kills the actual drum tech, makes himself a drum tech, and gets to talk to Mike Portnoy because he's a fun dude... then the show comes on, has to appear onstage again, to repeat this endless cycle. Why do you think you pretty much never see Myung in these stage tours? Ninja ninja ninja...
miltonartex lo ke pasa ke en el 2005 al 2007 trajo al tecnico eric disrude y en esta gra regreso jose baraqui es el ke ha traido todo el tiempo es muy buen batakero tmb (y)
@123theater1 Find a band, and practice for 6-10 hours a week in at least 3-5 hour chunks, you'll be fine in a month. And naw, they are standard long ones, which the lowest pitch one is 2 feet long.
I came here from the Metal Masters video where Portnoy, Benante and Lombardo all play together, and it's shocking how much Portnoy's playing between that video and this one sound EXACTLY THE SAME - as in, he plays *exactly* the same patterns. This guy has done some great work in the past, but he's definitely plateaued as far as creativity and ingenuity.
If you said that based on his recent work, than that would be a matter of opinion and I would respect it. But, instead, you based yourself on these 'solo sample' videos, and I really don't think that would be an accurate estimator for a musician's creativity. I think it's perfectly ok to just repeat the same patterns. He must be asked to do this A LOT. Anyway, just as a personal opinion, the only drum solos I would enjoy are those as in the ending of Dream Theater's "Finally Free". It really seems like drummers will just senseless beat the hell out of the kit when someone asks for them to play alone.

Whoever said "less is more" just had no fucking imagination.
Amen
and no fucking sense of logic

5:02 Mike Mangini as guest, how ironic
My thought exactly
Ok, so Mike had Jose as his drum tech here. But, previously when they were touring for Systematic Chaos and a couple other albums, he had another tech. Because Jose was his tech during Scenes From a Memory.

Those Toms just sound amazing .. you got to love TAMA drums.
Welcome back 🤘🏼
I would hate to be the drum tech Juan. Holy China the monster is huge. Absolutely gorgeous and amazing. I eat, sleep, and breathe drums. ❤
I would love to see someone try and make a replica of this kit (only the two bass drum half obviously or even the smaller half)
Kinda weird to hear Mike Mangini.
What?
God I am gonna miss seeing this silly amazing funny drummer on DT
Welcome back :)
Portnoy what a top bloke and a great drummer.
A rite of passage from black clouds and silver linings

@timn877 Yeah Petrucci also got a new tech methinks.

"i´ve had a lot of guests....mike mangini" yeah mike, mangini is gonna sit on your kit now xD
I seriously want Portnoy's shirt sooooooooooooooooo bad !
I think it is the same drumtech he's been using for several years ( asian). He just got longer hair now:-) Look at their older videos, he's the guy who swings Mike's microphone back and forth under vocal parts.
2:07, god I cant stop listening to that lol

@teachingfeller Well actually, the right side of the kit is pretty typical metal drumset? Not the whole kit, I mean the both sides together... :D
@ebyjon Well seeing as how that ride alone is about $400.00. I would guess around 9,000-10,000
If not more
@shazzylazzy good luck getting it out the back door...or any door for that matter
a rite of passage of the black clouds and silver linings album
maestrooo!!!! te llevo siempre en mi corazon
I like Portnoy's kit much than Mangini's
@ebyjon Well seeing as how that ride alone is about $400.00. I would guess around 9,000-10,000
If not more. No, deff more. Prob around 15-20,000
Im just stabbing in the dark, but wasnt this guy the tech for campotelli from Joe satriani's band? i might be completely wrong.
i think what he meant was that metal kits tend to be big; double bass drums with multiple toms and a lot of cymbals :P
Jose Baraquio has a great Job!!! Lucky bastard :D
Wait... so the one on the RIGHT is the odd one?!
mike portnoy: "you know...i get all this shit for free...so the least i can do is talk the best i can about tama" :D I WANT THIS FUCKING DRUMSET DAMN
HEY MIKE! i cant wait to see you use that kit for the next dream theater.....oh wait....
Definition of irony: Having as a guest his replacement from DT, to play his drums...
@Zynpar09 I would put a pillow inside it. And make sure its not like a factory head lol
i'm curious about jose's nationality.. is he Filipino??
LOVE the finish
miltonartex

Can you buy these at argos?
@helpmeimconfused a rite of passage, from black clouds & silver linings
anyone know how to tune the bass drum to make it sounds similar to Portnoy's? Do i tune the resonant higher than the batter?
@123theater1 Find a band, and practice for 6-10 hours a week in at least 3-5 hour chunks, you'll be fine in a month. And naw, they are standard long ones, which the lowest pitch one is 2 feet long.

He played Mapex drums too.
4:26 = it sounds like the bit from NIGHTMARE!

@MrJonzii94 No joke. They probably need a U-Haul truck to move the drums alone.
MP's beard is so LOL
Oh man... never heard jose talk before!!
sera q quiere obtener sonidos de awake y volver a esas raicez
es de mi kit favoritos
Whats the end song?

Maybe you should go and show him how it's done, Yea Right he would smoke you with both hands tied behind his back..
Wouldn't surprise me if he switched to DW. I can see it happening one day. ;-)
i agree with that man on youtube screen.....
