    You're giving me ideas. I'm thinking maybe a circuit like the vertical hold on old TVs: an oscillator free-runs a bit slower than the target speed but the incoming sync pulses will make it trigger slightly earlier. Then the problem becomes how to convert the sawtooth signal into wiper movement. Before I nerd snipe myself, I'll just say for the quality of your production I would have expected you to have already had 100k subscribers. Hearing you had under 1000 subs when you made this just shows that some people really do it just for the art. Thank you.

Then you said the words "Phase Locked Loop" and I felt so vindicated. It's kind of funny how human beings are naturally PLL's when walking with music. I do sort of worry that you may need to set a more conservative upper bound for the frequency - it was really givin 'er for that last tune.

    Hi Ian, great build! Is that acrylic or polycarbonate that you fold on the press brake? and did you just skip showing us the heating step?

    • @iancharnas
      @iancharnas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +amholtin Thanks for your super kind words and great question! That's polycarbonate. A friend of mine mentors FIRST robotics teams and told me about cold-bending polycarb. I tried it a few times and it really worked well! The plastic "flows" or stretches around the bend really nicely, and I don't see fissures or stress cracks on either the outer or inner bend radius. I _do_ see an indentation left from the sharp tips of the brake fingers, but I believe (waiting to be corrected on this) that indentations don't create stress concentrations in the same way that fissures and cracks do. Meaning that, although cracks may tend to propagate and eventually cause a mechanical failure, I think indentations don't have that problem. So, I think I still have most of the strength that's possible. I can jump up and down on the shape and it doesn't seem to care. The polycarbonate sheet I bent was 1/4 inch thick, and it required some brute force but it did bend. I think I would try to find a strip heater if I needed to get it beyond a 90 degree bend, or if the workpiece was thicker than 1/4 inch. Thanks and please subscribe!

    What happens if you play music that isn't 2/2 or 4/4 like a waltz or tango?
    Seriously, though, how does the system detect the wiper blade position?

    • @iancharnas
      @iancharnas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin, great questions!! Regarding a waltz, with its classic oom-pah-pah feel, that should work. The neural net that does beat detection (great open source software, unfortunately called "mad mom") was trained on lots of different music including 3/4 music such as waltzes. I'm not sure if it will detect all three beats as a beat, or whether it will just detect the root beat (the "oom"). It might depend on the BPM of the music. I gave the "mad mom" algorithm a min and max BPM range to keep it within reason.
      The system has one opportunity to detect the wiper blade position. I hooked my circuitry into the "park sensor" so the computer gets a pulse whenever the wiper blade hits the bottom position. This is used as the feedback to the PLL loop, if that makes sense.
      Thanks for the comment!

    Its almost there. You need to put in a multiple pole rotary switch. Have it run every other beat, or every fourth or eight beat. Speed control, but still to the music. If you could have some additional logic that tried to keep the same relative speed (when the song changes) that would also be a great feature. Setting 1 - 5-25 wipes per minute. Setting 2 15-45 wipes per minute. Setting 3 30-60 wipes per minute. Setting 4 45-100 wipes per minute. Setting 5 90 to 200 wipes per minute. I dont think it would be that hard to implement... It looks like the hard parts have already been finished.

    • @iancharnas
      @iancharnas  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew great suggestion. I was thinking the same thing. Even better, if Tesla buys this, they already have a rain sensor on their windshield, so they could use that data to automatically change the multiple (whether it wipes on the beat, every other beat, twice each beat, etc).

    I’d like to see you build a 3D Excavator to unearth fossils and artifacts - kind of like a reverse 3D printer. Ideally thin sections of material would be removed via drill or laser; vaporized and sent to a mass spectrometer to record the makeup of the material; as it is removed. This should provide information that is lost when current methods of extraction (hammer, chisel, and toothbrush) are used. ;-)

During my career in computer programming, quality assurance, and office automation, I worked in many fields, from business applications to analysis of electrophoresis protein. Watching hundreds of hours of archeological and paleontological digs, it seems a lot of data is lost through the extraction techniques currently in use.

    Is the beat detection also able to detect other time signatures? (like 3/4 or 7/8)

    • @iancharnas
      @iancharnas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Jochen! Good question about time signatures. The beat detection algorithm doesn't really know what the time signature is, so it will do just as well with 7/8 as it would with 4/4. However, some beats are easier to detect than others. A 3/4 waltz with a traditional "oom pah pah" rhythm is difficult because the "oom" has more energy in its frequency bin than the "pah" does, so sometimes the beat detector will hear the "oom" but not the "pah pah" and it will sync to a slower rhythm. There are ways to fix this, and the beat detector implements some of those fixes. It is a work in progress.

      Hey thanks for the super nice comment! From start to finish it was two months, although more than half of the time went to filming. The hardest part was getting good audio quality. I tried putting microphones all over the place, and often had to re-record large segments of the video when I listened to it later and found the audio was too noisy - either from wind noise or from the microphone rubbing on my clothing. Huge props to the sound people of the world - they are wizards to me. I think next time around, what I've learned from this video could help me finish the next video in less than one month. Fingers crossed!

      @@iancharnas The time really shows in the quality of the video, lots of poor shot videos on TH-cam. Do you plan on selling these or publishing the parts list. Would love one on my Worn out Astro Van.

      @@brandonmaddy good question! I thought about turning this into a product, or open-sourcing the design... but instead, I thought I'd try to sell the idea to someone who wanted to productize it (the rights to the idea are for sale on ebay now), and I'll move on to filming the next invention video. I've got a long list of things I'd like to make and film. Hopefully people will find the next few ideas equally entertaining, and we can raise some money for some good charities.

    LOL, you lost it for me as soon as you said you would use a Raspberry Pi!!! Why anyone would use one of those for any product just shows the utter lack of knowledge. For starters, they dont have the temp range to be put in any outdoor application, and secondly Not properly shutting it down is going to corrupt that uSD card if it doesn't fall out first because they stop using latches to hold the uSD cards in.

    • @iancharnas
      @iancharnas  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yes, you are 100% correct - a PI isn't rated to below 0 degrees Celsius. This is only a prototype, so I didn't bother using automotive temp rated parts. I did use some automotive MOVs and protection diodes and an automotive rated switching power supply to get the system to a "good enough" point electrically speaking so that it will work reliably for demonstration purposes. It might not work during the coldest part of the Ohio winter though, as you pointed out.
