I've never used a wrench to tighten or remove the nut off my grinder. Just grab the disc by hand and pull it down to loosen it then remove it by hand.

This just popped up. I have the slide lock model being delivered tomorrow according to Home Depot tracking. I got away with years of using a die grinder but I finally need a grinder and I am on the Makita platform so this made sense. I don't have regular wheels so I am starting from scratch. Good fit all around.

I think you will be happy Scott! Mak makes a solid grinder, despite what others might say. I have three of them, one cordless, or else I would jump on one of these. Please protect your eyes, and your ears! I have a friend recently go to the ER to get a piece of cut off wheel out of corner of his eye! 😳 He never plays it safe, hopefully this will get his attention! Peace!

Either Metabo, or Makita, when it comes to a grinder. Makita is so smooth. Metabo is known for being dependable, and enjoys a great reputation amongst the trades. I have three Makitas, otherwise Id be checking one of these out! On my soap box once again, It’s a crying shame Makita doesn’t offer anything above 6.0 Amp Hours, in their 18 Volt line. These new grinders could sure benefit from a bigger battery. Thumbs Up Dave! 👍👍👍😁✌🏻🇺🇸

The issue with makita grinders is they run at around 8000rpm so bigger batteries would only offer a longer run time.
If you want a higher powered cordless you should look at Bosch or DeWalt. The latest Bosch brushless can run up to 11000rpm using their ProCore batteries.
Makita cordless grinders are notoriously slow and it's the main reason I hate mine.

@@SammyInnit Good point Sam, and I’m inclined to agree with you. Bosch indeed makes a good grinder, but Lowe’s and other retailer's carried the same old tired and old brushed design for quite awhile. Some would argue the Milwaukee is better? Nothing shabby about DeWalt. I almost always use my corded Makita grinders, and they do very well. Appreciate the comment and insight! Peace!

The disadvantage for me is that I can only use the 5 inch, not the 4.5 inch. The smaller one doesn't have enough reach. The 5 inch Xlock can only be bought online, that means I have to pay for shipping too.

  • @Flash2171

The 2nd guard (the one you didn’t use) is open completely on the bottom. That would have made using the grinder disk easier to use.

You've probably long since realized or been told, but you don't need to touch the locking mechanism when fitting discs. All you do is drop one on and press it against the tool until it snaps engaged. Albeit minute, you're making a fast change slower than need be.

I needed a new battery-operated Grinder, so I picked up one of these and OfCourse it had to be a Makita. Im a Makita junkie. So is the X-lock grinder is pretty cool, but is it worth it? Well that depends. To put it simply don't go out and buy a new X-lock grinder if you already have a perfectly working grinder. You will just be wasting your money. Its a cool system for attaching disks, but it does not save you enough time to be economically viable enough to go out and buy one if you already have a working grinder. Now if you are in the market for a new grinder, because you don't have one. By all means, go with the Xlock. Its a robust mechanism that will last and I think its just going to grow in popularity among manufactures, especially after Bosch's patents expire.

Good video. I am glad you mentioned in the video that you cannot use other discs. Therefore the X-lock means they locked you in for life to buy their discs. I didn’t see anything monumental as where I need to run out and get this tool. From what I saw it is just a gimmick to buy something and increase their profits.

It's a clever system but it won't replace the standard threaded arbor. Bosch introduced a very similar system to X-lock many years back on their earlier cordless grinders and it died out almost over night.
The reality is, most people who use a lot of grinders such as fabricators have 2/3/4/5 grinders set up at hand at any one time.
These won't be replaced very quickly if at all, SDS clic nuts or quick release nuts remove the need for wrenches and seasoned users can swap discs in as little time as the X lock system.
Not to mention most people who use them a lot can buy bulk discs from their local supply house which come in at a fraction of the cost of the X lock branded discs.
This is a system perfect for DIY and home owner types who have little experience or training with abrasive wheels but I think there's little appeal to professional users.

    • @LemonySnicket-EUC
      @LemonySnicket-EUC ปีที่แล้ว

I have both styles. This disc swap is way easier and faster. And yes, I have a full rack of all types of grinders and I do not use a wrench for wheel change. This style is hands down easier and faster. Like you say Not so popular though. It's very handy for mobile work.

X-lock much more safer, allows very fast stop, you can't put your disc the wrong way , much faster, and x-lock disc can go on your old grinder. 👍
Bosch patent release 2 years ago in Europe and sold à year ago to makita. And most of the disc manufacturer do it.
