There needs to be stricter standards for food and water companies before the products become available to the consumer. These companies are able to make false statements just so they can profit. SMH!!!
Maybe hire a chemist next time... Too much of anything can be bad. He pretty much said he added more chemicals to the water and didn't even comprehend he could have been exceeding FDA guidelines. But he was following the instructions of his boss who also should have known.
It seems like what they’re saying is there is no FDA guidelines for this. Which just adds to the problem. I know people don’t like the government overreach but in some areas like our food companies won’t do the right thing unless they’re forced to. For example get qualified chemist to make food.
People keep acting like this is what PhD chemists do. It's not. $80-100K+ industrial chemists don't work on production lines, adding chemicals and testing pH of every batch of water. They set standards, create protocols, and develop procedures to ensure a standard outcome. in a larger facility, you might have a quality control person who oversees randomized product testing. But this is a very small facility. A literal mom and pop shop. They're lucky if they even had a consultant establish guidelines and procedures to follow and maybe answer questions on occasion. If procedures and training were in place, this man would have probably been an okay hire. He lacks a little common sense, but apparently, he figured that if the chemicals he was working with were harmful, he wouldn't have been left on his own. And just because this man didn't know about the chemical compounds, doesn't mean they were the wrong chemicals. Just may have been the wrong dosages. Just poor management all around.

There's something else at issue here, I'm pretty sure, beginning with workers that have no real understanding of their jobs. A pH in the 8 range isn't that far away from neutral (7) and there are city water systems whose "normal" water is also as high as the mid-8 range. It _is_ better for infrastructure, especially metal pipe longevity, and probably for acid reflux sufferers as well. (My city, in contrast, spends a small fortune trying to lime its acidic water stocks just to reach the mid 6's.) Hyping alkaline water using other unproven claims is just standard American snake-oil sales tactics.
@@ReflectedMiles I suspect that better science education would give people a better understanding of pH and thus at least mitigate both of these issues. I mean, the inverse makes sense, so he probably assume that the direct version would make sense as well. If something is poisonous, you probably shouldn't ingest any of it, even if it's a tiny, tiny amount. A "trace" amount of something very dangerous is still bad. And if something is completely safe - usually a bit more, or double, etc. of that thing is still fine. Like, for example, something random like a food - a banana let's say. One banana is safe, ergo, most people would also assume eating 6 bananas is still safe. Or if this was orange juice concentrate or something, added double the OJ concentrate would still be safe, just might taste weird. He was thinking along those lines. You can't blame the guy, it makes sense with many other food/drink items, so I can see why he'd think about it that way, especially given that he has no idea what's in that concentrate. I mean, he was still wrong - but the owners were responsible for this ultimately. They were the one putting who knows what into the water, and telling an untrained guy that has NO IDEA what's in the "concentrate" and isn't a chemist, etc. - to just "put in more concentrate" was a horrendously stupid and irresponsible thing to do. They're the ones at fault here, not this poor goober that was probably being paid like 10 bucks an hour to dump some mystery liquid into bottled water for his boss.
In his defense, he doesn't have the education or training to know any better. He also probably assumed that the concentrate was just a buffer to bring up the pH to the proper level on his meter, and as long as he hit the right number or range on the meter it was all good no matter how much he added.

It seems like what they’re saying is there is no FDA guidelines for this. Which just adds to the problem. I know people don’t like the government overreach but in some areas like our food companies won’t do the right thing unless they’re forced to. For example get qualified chemist to make food.
An actual chemist would NEVER participate in a sham like this...real alkaline water comes from a spring!

The regulation that's really needed is better science education standards so people don't fall for alkaline water claims.
Yup just for that powerful Dollar.
Yeah, by his logic, they could just drink the concentrate straight from the source and it would be the same as drinking just the water. WTF?
😳 How about the Vaccines 😳

I commented on this when the virus first started to spread in China 2020.
Interesting to see bottled water in the news, now.

@Sushiirull You laughing? You don't think there isn't really such a thing as an alkalinized water fella? Stop being damn idiots thinking that unnatural liquid is better than plain 7.0pH water. Of course there are chemicals they add in to make that pH high.

@Sushiirull Literally the most non-chemist reply you could ever make is to claim to be a chemist instead of talking about the solvents they add in it. Only buy bottled water when I have no choice. Or by sparkling the tap is fine it's regulated more than these bottled water idiots..
Here’s a tip: If something that is meant for human or animal consumption says “Alkaline” on the packaging, it really isn’t something you should think won’t hurt you in some way. After all, this is the same stuff that can be found in batteries so it’s like consuming a battery really if you think about it.
Why just because some battery’s have alkaline on the side?
Most bottled water brands are just tap water.
I had a bottle of water that said, 'from the municipal water source of Kentland, Indiana'. That's in the middle of corn country... no doubt it had detectable herbicide or pesticide.

Alkaline water? 1 gal of spring water add juice from 1/2 of a key lime.
Lime is acidic. Not alkaline.
@@catherinegreen8440 it is acidic. A "Key Lime" is comparatively lower in acidity than a regular lime. This increases the PH making it more alkaline.
@@carlosandzs acid doesn't ever increase pH. A key lime might lower the pH less than a regular lime, but both contain acid which will lower the pH of the water regardless. Now if we're talking about the chemical lime (like the stuff in sink descaler products), that contains calcium hydroxide which is a base which, if added to water will increase the pH (but I don't think you'd necessarily want to drink that)
what?
@@carlosandzs limes are acidic, by definition they neutralize alkalis. Acids Will mever increaee the alkalinity of something because they are by definition opposites. This is not math, 2 negatives don't make a positive, 2 acids don't make a basic solution.
I love how he said “you don’t make the water it’s just there.” If anything you clean it and/or use limes.
I stopped buying alkaline water at our local water store, due to ill affects I was experiencing in my stomach. I'm pretty sure they're using Sodium Hydroxide, a pipe cleaner, those containers are so familiar to me. I'm a volunteer specializing in Hazardous materials
Edit, it might be a mixture of potassium and sodium hydroxide.
Ionization can be a safer alternative to this.
You are correct, most likely Sodium Hydroxide, which is extremely caustic in high concentration. I am a water treatment engineer/chemical engineer. Get a reverse osmosis system.
@Blue Skies No not cyanide or Borax, but Sodium Hydroxide.
Sodium hydroxide is LYE. 😮💀
Wait are they using lye 😳
@@america.rodriguez Yes, lye is Sodium Hydroxide, which in concentrated form has a pH of 14. When added to water, it forms Sodium and Hydroxide Ions, which in low concentration are not toxic. However, in higher concentrations it becomes toxic. It's basically the same as acid, but high pH, instead of low pH. Acidic solutions such as soft drinks are not relatively toxic, but in higher concentration s become highly acidic and toxic.
