Thank you so much for your informative videos. As a new hotshotter and authority owner the advice and lessons learned that you and others in our industry have shared is invaluable. Thank you!!!!
Great video as always bro!! I finally just finished up my 6 month project. Going over the road next week. I hope people interested in their own hotshot business know it can be very expensive getting started. On top of the $60,000 I spent on a new truck and 40’ trailer, I spent another $15,000 on on setting up the company, items needed for the truck and trailer (registrations, taxes, fees, lots of equipment, load boards, ELD, hotspot, iPad, on and on and on), and then $11,000 for my insurance ( I’ve had a clean CDL since 1997). This is kind of a hobby/retirement plan for me, but it can get expensive quick. People also need to have low personal bills (my children are grown and all my house bills are only $1,100 a month), and also know if they like being on the road or not. It’s not for everyone. Just my 2 cents. Thanks as always for taking the time to make these very informative videos! 👍✌️
You nailed it right there. I think people looking into this need to study more into the behind the scenes of this career path more so than the payoffs! 👍
THANK YOU L.M.!! This video was cool, I learned a lot. Helps big time for my continuous research into the Hotshot world. I will be ready to pull the trigger by around April. Hello, Happy Holidays to you, WOW the bare minimum, that what I ask & say back in 01/1979 when I started my Owner Company. After I got my 1st load on my 40 ft trailer step-deck spread. I did not have enough chains or straps. Then when the Government pulls you over because you did put on enough strap or chain, & my tarp, was flapping in the wind. But occurs, I knew everything then being young, Nobody could tell me nothing, I knew everything. Boy, was I WRONG? Ever Load is different. better to have too much, than to lose the load, because, I did not have enough, tired down. I am still being taught, & a learning experience. 45 + years. Later, O/O of Eagle-Engineer/Deliv/Agriculture, Svc. YOU ARE SAYING & DEMONSTRATING IT RIGHT. Carry on. SEMPER FI CSE 12/25/2020
I'd like to know what and all you bring in the truck with you? How many days clothing,Food, drinks, storage of personal stuff..any particular electronics to have etc... Thanks in advance!
Food and drink and storage is pretty much determined by how long I plan on going out, but space is limited. So even when I was staying out for weeks at a time I would always pack 2 weeks worth of clothing and weeks worth of food and just restock at Walmart as needed. In my eyes if I have to do laundry, I’ve been out too long lol.
Great video! Very informative! Can you make a video showing how you secure loads with all this equipment? If you have any tips while doing it... Thanks for all you do.
Jus subscribed to you channel great video appreciate the information looking to get started in March or April do you have places we can look into to get the equipment you described
I own my Trucking authority got my f 350 I was following towpiglet but something didn’t seem rite I pulled my DOT AND MC NUMBER OFF HIS SITE IM IN NEED OF A TRAILER I HAVE CASH
It really depends on the neck length of your trailer. The closer you can get to 8’ you can hit the 65’ mark. The longer wheelbase is a much smoother ride and if you have the bed on the truck it gives you a lot more room for storage. IFTA doesn’t regulate that though. Each state’s DOT regs determine the overall length of a truck and trailer combination.
Thank you for your content. It makes it much easier to make informed decisions. Question: Do shipping companies not like to load freight when using a 12' hydraulic lift on a 40' bed?
that is what i used when i did deck work. you have to weld j hooks to your trailer to secure the rope but it makes tarping so much faster and you dont have a rats nest of bungies in a box to untangle
I’ve been told that if a trailer has double axles, you must have a CDL. Is this true? I know there are weight restrictions but didn’t think there were restrictions on axles.
I personally think 32-36 range is perfect for non cdl. 30 would definitely be starting to get short in the world of flatbed. Like I tell everybody though, I generally ran out of weight before I ran out of room on my 40’ at cdl weight. Other than a few good grouped partials I only really used the full 40’ for single or dual containers and even that was rare because of the fuel impact.
Great info like always. I'm a few months away from hitting the ground..Got tired of class 8 truck life. I've been eyeing the hotshot industry for a while. What brand of trailer would you, or anyone else in these comments, most recommend if you had to start with a used trailer?
That’s awesome man. I’d honestly worry less about the brand and look at the features and tire wear on the trailer. The biggest mistake I made was buying a flat deck. Most definitely get one with flip out ramps, full width. Equipment is a hot commodity and it’s just almost impossible to load with pull out ramps.
@@LoadMizer Thanks a million. I'm sure I'll have a few more questions here pretty soon. Stay tuned. I'll be starting to purchase equipment for the trailer soon.
Standard length is 12’. I’ve got a set posted in the description that I bought after the ones I had for my flatbed. I’ve had them over 35” tires no issue. 👍
Mainly because it’s an added expense that doesn’t increase capacity as far as weight goes rather the opposite. I know several that has it though and they are on dedicated accounts hauling foam panels. 4x8
You’d definitely be privy to loads specific to step deck and have a lot more space for loads, you’ll be countered by added weight of a step deck. I think it’s a good idea though. That or a 40’ with a deck on neck. It wouldn’t limit you that’s for sure.
Question: if your strap loses or doesnt have a tag anymore, is that a violation? Assume need to toss strap? Thanks! Great information, i have rail need to get 4” ratchets in there if i ever get trailer rolling 🙄😂
Most successful non cdl guys that I know get it done with a 32’ trailer. 25+5 would most likely be your best option. You’ll appreciate the turning ability with it too 👍
I do have a couple of small sections but for the most part if the space allows it I’ll just use 1 chain and grab it with 2 separate binders then secure the slack in between. Turn 1 chain into 2 basically.

@@LoadMizer How much do you charge to haul cars? $650.00 per automobile? So five cars x $650.00 per load per trip?
Great video, I would add moving blankets to the list. They really help save the tarps and the item being tarped sometimes.
That’s one item in the list that wasn’t on the video, tried to make it as short as possible lol. Moving blankets are a must in my book 👍

How long do you get the chains?
I use 20’
@@LoadMizer all are 20'? No shorter? Just for general usability

You mentioned long or shortbed trucks, isn't a shorted ideal with a 40' trailer due to ifta regulations?

Thank you for your content. It makes it much easier to make informed decisions. Question: Do shipping companies not like to load freight when using a 12' hydraulic lift on a 40' bed?
I’ve heard that some don’t but for the most part you’ll be fine. That tail will make you lore money hauling equipment than you’ll lose for pallets 👍
No counter fire from TP?
Undisputed minus his fan club.
Can't counter fire when all you have is BLANKS
@Sgt, best response
I haven't found a trailer yet that a wire hook will fit through the rub rail.
have you tried rubber rope instead of bungies for your tarps.
I’ve used it in the past when I was hauling pipe continually and needed to secure a smoke tarp every day. Never used it to secure tarped loads though.
that is what i used when i did deck work. you have to weld j hooks to your trailer to secure the rope but it makes tarping so much faster and you dont have a rats nest of bungies in a box to untangle
That’s the truth man.
What length straps should I get? I was thinking 30’ ? 10’ going up, 8.6 across and 10’ going down?
Yep 30’ is pretty much the standard size. Shouldn’t be anything legal that you can’t haul with those 👍
Starting out do you recommend CDL or non CDL
Definitely CDL, because if Hotshot doesn’t pan out you can be in orientation with a job lined up the following Monday.
I’ve been told that if a trailer has double axles, you must have a CDL. Is this true? I know there are weight restrictions but didn’t think there were restrictions on axles.
Yoo do you think a 14gn big Tex 25+5 with mega ramps a good non cdl trailer setup? That’s all I can find in IL
I personally think 32-36 range is perfect for non cdl. 30 would definitely be starting to get short in the world of flatbed. Hello, Load Mizer can tell if it is possible to change the rating of a trailer from 14000 lb to 12000 lb, legally?
Yes just contact the manufacturer and let them know you need to derate it. They’ll send you a decal to put over the current one.
What’s going on Mizer, question.. did you seal your wood deck ? If so what did you use in it?
Yessir. Just used a can of Thompson’s water seal from Lowe’s. 👍
