CARS OR FREIGHT? | Which is the better choice? | Hotshot Trucking

- This is a big question that I frequently get. It's good that I get this question because it's a very important one to ask when looking into this industry or just starting out. The hotshot world has many options to generate revenue but most of them fall into these 2 categories. Which is the better choice for you?

I know this particular video is 2 yrs old but I learned more in 15 mins than weeks from others.
Listening to good advice is more important than Listening to what you want to hear like some1 we know 😆 🤣 always makes things sound easy and colorful.
Awesome. I’ve considered cars more than freight but have also still been on the fence. I think I will probably start with cars and then see what happens from there. Thanks for yet another simple explanation of a complex topic!
Very persuasive and thought provoking! I watched all the way through - and I even left the playback speed normal!
I’m thinking through setting up my hot shot business and this video was super helpful, I live in Phoenix and there’s probably tons of car loads here and I don’t wanna be gone months at a time.
I started last week with a 2 car hauler and Ram2500.
Real numbers for my very first week,
$3550.00 gross -
$597.00 on fuel
$400.00 on insurance
$224.00 on food/expenses.
Not too shabby out of the gate.
Dont forget to take out your taxes every week.
Not bad on insurance
Hit me at 510-2095768 trying To get my rig brought to California from Memphis Tennessee
Anyone can do this job hit me asap Is any hot shot team
do more daily vlogs of you dealing with brokers, clients, picking up cars etc
Good point of view man! makes a ton of sense to me..especially the practicality of the fact that most people can load unload cars/trucks..Not everyone can handle loading and unloading a flatbed..
ur spot on man ! sure would like to have a one on one conversation wih you
This really helps especially living in Saint Louis Missouri there's lots and lots of car dealerships and auctions....Thanks
Great information and not that BS you get from some others I've watched, straight to the point without trying to be a stand-up comedian for subs.
Well laid out, LM! Much appreciated!
I normally don't add comments but in this case I will. Your video just help me tremendously brother. Excellent content and got right to the point. I live in South Florida and I have A CDL I'm 50 years old I'm getting back in the game buying a tractor probably this week and I'm gonna go ahead with a car wedge 4 or 5 because of the availability of freight in-and-out of Florida I could stay closer to home. You are absolutely point on correct I don't want to have to go all the way up to the Midwest to run flat bed freight Chained down stuck in one spot to come all the way back. Thank you very much brother lots of help🙂👍
Good on you! Glad to help out man but more than that I’m happy to see people like yourself researching. 👍👍
You hit the nail on the head with practicality, it seems like you were talking directly to me, I do freight and I do have to drive well over 1000 miles to stay busy and somewhat profitable and just like you said I’m gone almost 2 weeks at a time and it sucks not being home, should’ve done cars living in North Central Florida.
Hello, read your comment saying you’re in Florida, I am also in Florida Fort Lauderdale and I guess he answered my question to go ahead and get a car hauler.. Good luck
Good video! Another thing to consider is that a basic 3 car trailer is usually a few thousand dollars cheaper than a flatbed trailer if they’re not decked over. And much cheaper to maintain as well as there are no wooden boards to replace.
As someone researching and interested in the hotshot world. Great video!!
Michigan check in thanks for keeping it 💯 being honest really appreciate you
VERY informative!!! Thanks for taking the time to make videos like this!
Great Video! We have had terrible luck with the 2019 Dodge Ram 3500 as far as it being a lemon! My boss is fixing to buy a Semi and 8 car hauler I'm looking forward to getting away from freight and into hauling cars! Plus with freight its hard for me to get home!
Hey bro hotshotnewengland here, great info I agree with 99% of what you said. The only thing I would correct you on is I never had any company ask for the extra 1 million in liability coverage. I'm registered with all the major companies like united road, carvana, acv etc and never saw 2 million requirement. With cargo, companies do want about 150k for 3 cars, I personally went with 250k as that extra 100k was only a couple hundred dollars per year. Take care and hope you have a great 2021! 💪👊💰🇺🇸
I’m pretty sure it was ready logistics that required the extra 1 mil
@@LoadMizer I wouldn't put an extra mil just for one company unless if I loaded a lot for them. Also liability doesn't do anything for the customer so that's pretty stupid they would even request that. To each it's own 🤷♂️. 💪👊
Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your experience and knowledge. It's invaluable to anyone thinking about entering the business.
Thank you for that video I m new and don t know what to do cars or freight
No BS ...Straight to the point
Great video and great information. I’m looking at starting a hotshot company at the beginning of the year which is just a week away. I have done a lot of research so far. Thanks.
another plus about hauling cars is picking up at Manheim. they are usually 6am til 10pm. you can go and go off duty, go get 3 cars and load them and strap them in, spend the night on the property, and hit the road the next morning loaded with a fresh clock.
I always used Manheim as an emergency place to park for the night even if I wasn’t picking up or dropping there 😂
I have a question for you if I can pick your brain
Nice wrap up, lotta info, to the point 👍👍.
You are the one that convinced me do car hauling. Thanks man!!
That’s awesome man, I’m glad I could help out 💪
I started with a GMC Yukon xl a 20ft flatbed hauling construction supplies for local contractors hauling household furniture helping people move anyway to getting your company and name out there
Good info. Thanks for taking the time.
Awesome video. Love the details and the breakdown! Definitely should get the wheels turning in a lot of peoples heads.
Thanks man!
That gave me a lot to think about.
I ran the volvo pictured & a sun country 5 car out of Upstate NY and tons went to OH, not much on the backhauls unless you want NYC area, no thanks. It was a game changer over the 3 car wedge. Weight, volume, and yes you need a cdlA license. My customers one in particular loved lifted deisel big trucks. That cost me a lot of reload time and cut # carried but, I could move them and not watch my wedge bowed up flatten out. In 21 I knocked out 150k about 600 vehicles. It's worth the A license, and a sleeper beats the hell out of a backseat. Good luck drivers. 👍 that truck went down, and I'm looking at another after 1.5 year as a w2. You set your schedule range and pace.
I'm so thinking about doing this.
Great video! Keep us updated on how it is going.
Great presentation Ricky.🇬🇧👍
I do cars with a 3 car wedge. Everything you said is very accurate but one thing you left out is how your paid. Every customer whether dealer or private customer pays once I drop off. I’ll get a check , cash, cash app or Zelle. Vs freight where I haft to wait.
Great info ! Keep up the great work 👍
I did the Wedge and there is a Maintenance difference. Cars are Heavy and Trailer Build is Light. Meaning the Wedge has lots of stricture-Going Up on the Trailer means Crap for Quality because the Engineering is what it is...Its all Crap. 5 Cars and Hydraulics that's different but your not going to be hauling with a 350 or 3500 Truck either. Last Note is watch your Rearend Oil Temp (better setup with Temp Gauges and Oil Coolers. To many guys are Burning up the bearings and dont know why(?)? ASK Am I full of it? I was a Pro Truck and Auto Tech for 18 years-Hotshot, think about it before you Jump. 😱
Diff Oil Coolers, Engine Oil Coolers and Trans Oil Coolers and all install Temp Gauges. 👍
Priceless knowledge laid down right there. 👍
@Hello how are you doing
I’m enjoying the flatbed world right now, guess I’ll wait till I get burn out with it before I move to cars - but that was an awesome breakdown of what I can expect! Great video!
One thing I didn’t take into consideration on this was just flat out preference. Some people have absolutely no desire to run one or the other. I’m just the kind of person that has to dabble in. Little bit of everything to satisfy curiosity lol
@@LoadMizer this is all new to me having my own business and running a flatbed I guess after A while I want to dabble a little too! 😂
It’s contagious 😂
is there a way to see whats out there on both avenues in our locations without having to pay a load board cars/ freight? Just wondering. Thank you again for always putting yourself out here and the facebook so thankful!!
Awesome info bro. Sounds like our situations are a lot alike. I got a feeling I might have to pick me up a car hauler and put my flatbed on standby for a while to do a comparison in my area👊
That’s the way to do it man. I gotta find out real time 👍
That is really true 👍 I do car hauling but I want to buy a hotshot trailer just in case
LM, have you heard about the new hub-o-meter by vulcrum? Supposed to come out soon. It bolts to the existing vulcrum hub cap and counts mileage so you know when to change the oil in your hubs. I'm going to do a video on it when I get it. It will be on my Mayberry Mini Trucks channel.
I haven’t heard of that! Keep me posted and I’ll check that out for sure.
🤔
Why not just write your miles down when you put fresh oil in
Very well explained. Pros & cons for both. I can see that moving cars could be easier overall. Flexibility in hours and days, weight distribution is usually consistent with cars. Less accessories/equipment to secure cars. You may need a winch for non-running cars. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge. 👍
I started with a 3 car hauler , seem $3500-$4500 weekly once I changed to my 5 car infinity trailer hauler and easy pushing 5k-7.5k weekly the money is in the 5 car + so I definelly recommend getting ur CDL
Hands down. I’d never recommend anybody start this without a CDL because if this venture fails, you can fall back on that piece of plastic immediately. 👍
Having a CDL class B Good enough for heavy loads?
@@lismandolphy3465 you need a class A
what kind of truck are you riding ? Thanks
What's pulling the 5 car trailer
Great video. I’ve been researching trying to figure out if I want to get a box truck or a car hauler. I needed the numbers.
That was one of your most important videos I have listened to keep up the hard work man
Great video!! Thanks Load
Thumbs up LM......keep em coming...very helpful!
Great job bro! Always helpful topics
This is a great video. I’m a former Air Force loadmaster on airplanes so loading vehicles is what I did for years. I’m going into the vehicle transport game with a dually and a 2-3 car wedge at first. Is a 3 car too much for an F350 or a similar Ram\Chevy???? I want to buy enough truck and a similarly prepped trailer. Maybe start with a two car? Or does a 3 to start sound better? I’m going to start with auto transport and towing specifically.
Excellent info. Very good presentation also. Thanks
Thank you man. Good PowerPoint
Great 👍 information interesting how the chemistry change between freight and car hauler good video.
Great video man. You have very informative videos.
Good points. Lots to ponder.
Great video..thanks for the information
I tend to do freight and when theres no freight you Book cars 40ft PJ Gooseneck, that way you don't end up standing anywhere. best to have a trailer for multi-roll
Yep, got a 40' airride with hydraulic dove. can do freight or two cars....thats how i know cars dont pay well
I get paid more moving truck frames than trucks! Freight is Great!!!
@@mrblackmack2689 tru, however prices rising like crazy double the price even 2 months back per diesel and food the cheapest meal at fast food is 10$ when it used to be 6

Great Video bro.. i am in school to get my cdla.. make a video on how do you get loads, dispatchers and weekly pay.. 👍🏼👍🏼

Good Video ‼️💯💯….what is the GVR on ur truck that you use to pull the 3car Trailer?
Well spoken brother!
Good stuff!
Thanks 🙏
Another great video!
Great information thanks
Gteat video...im getting in to the vehicle hauling in the VA area
I was already leaning towards cars but I think I've been pushed over the cliff. Seems like cars flow alot better as a whole
When searching load boards , does it state if it needs to be tarped?
Have you ever delivered utility/cargo trailers? Appreciate all the info on ALL your videos.
Sometimes it will be in the description of the load but most often it will be told to you by the broker if it needs to be tarped or not. In any instance I always ask because that changes the rate for me. Surprise tarp loads when you’re at the shipper can really throw your timing off sometimes. That’s why I always ask if they don’t say it first.
Good teach. Very informative
great vid....
That's awesome, LM
Good Info!
Im just seeing this 2yrs later. Good info! 2yrs later hows it going? Still making bank?
It must be State when it comes to insurance. I’m looking to start up hot shotting hauling cars soon. The best policy that I’ve come across is with Progressive and it’s over $24,000 for a year. I am in Florida.
Gahhh damn….
I’m in Florida as well how old are you
@@eriegaming9898 60 and a great driving record
Great video 👍
I was told to be a sole proprietor and not LLC. That LLC you gotta pay unnecessary money for lawyers if you get sued. That the insurance from being sole proprietor will also cover you if you get sued without all the extra lawyer costs. 🤔
If you get sued you’re hiring a defense attorney regardless of your business structure. There’s way too much liability to run a trucking business as a sole prop.
@@LoadMizer thanks brotha. I'll look well into everything. Keep them videos coming. I know for a fact I wanna do cars. Just the thought of hauling cars hypes me up.
For an first time hauler. How much would I spend?
Good info , bro!!!
Thanks man!
Great video
Thanks
@Hello Tony how are you doing
Thanks for the video! I am considering starting toward the end of spring hotshotting. I currently work in sewer, I am a class 2 operator, around April I’ll have my class 3’s. But I am getting tired of getting sprayed with raw sewage every day. I have worked the dock for YRC, and XPO Logistics, and have my Class A CDL’s, are you taking on any new drivers? I am looking to take a small business loan out to get started so I can get a used truck, and used trailer with mega ramps so I can haul freight, and vehicles. I would appreciate your opinion on this, and if your taking on new drivers.
where you located?
@@patrickolson4962 , West Virginia
For freight, my insurance quote is 50k a year! Its outrageous!
Damn man what state are you in?
Very new in the business but the average is about 18k per year in insurance.
So I have a ? Exactly how much it took to get started I also have a csl
Question
Working out of McAllen Texas hauling cars 3 car trailer in state or to Seattle area is it worth it looking at the dispatch? Is there alot of cars going out of tx and to tx? Thanks

What about the wind drag on that top car ? Fuel consumption any different ?
Definitely. Fuel on the wedge dropped my mpg average by about 1.5 mpg
Hello great video, if I get a three car hauler what is the best Dually pick up to buy? Thanks in advance
I’m really not brand loyal. Honestly once warranty falls off the best truck to have is the one your diesel mechanic knows the most about. 👍
I’m highly interested. How do you get loads?
LOAD MIZER IS THE GO TO GUY IS YOU WANNA BEAT DOT STRAIGHT UP
I currently have a 40’ 2 car hauler I use for personal stuff, do you believe there is enough money to be made with just a 2 car or would going to a 3 car be the better way to start out?
If you don’t have any direct dealerships or auctions to work with then it will be pretty hard to make good money with only 2 cars at a time.
Thanks for this video. I'm very new to car hauling and I'm going into my 3rd week with this company that I've been running for. I plan to have my authority finished next month after getting the insurance and I've been back and forth with if I should stay with car hauling or should I do cars and freight.
Did you ever make that decision? & are you still on the road? How’s it going?
Let's hear an update! You still driving? Did you get own authority? And stick with cars?
What company do you work for bro ? I'm trying to get into this experience first before starting my own thing
@@preshj0hnson I apologize for the late response, no, I'm not driving anymore
@@joseparada530 I suggest making sure you have a good amount of $$ on hand for fuel, so you won't spend your pay before you get it.
What fifth wheel hitch do you use?
Load Mizer, how long have you been in the trucking industry? How long have you been a hotshot? Just curious, great info man!
Trucking 12 years. Hotshot 1 year
Hey LM . You nailed this. I live just south of Indianapolis bought the 40ft flatbed and it seems I can never be home as anticipated.. What truck would you recommend with say a 4 or 5 car hauler? Definitely considering moving to this..
I’d look deep into specs on trailer weight and rear truck axle weight rating and brakes. In my opinion the 550/5500 trucks would be the way to go with a hauler over 3 cars. I’m flat out killing this F350 with just my 3 car wedge.
@@LoadMizer yeah that’s what I though also.. thanks to your one video I finally started focusing on the drive axle wr ALOT more! Thanks LM keep up the inspiration 😀
Hey LM I am searching out 4 or even 5 car haulers. What I don’t get is that all I’m seeing is around a 25k gvwr which makes no sense.. Even advertised full truck haulers or suv Lol. Sounds to me that they want to sell you a hauler but you could only put go karts in the spaces to comply with gvwr. Any advice?? Thanks!
2500hd or 3500hd for Car hauling? Great info and video
Is there specific load boards for cars? Where or how do you get car loads? I know about freight but nothing about cars.
Central dispatch is the biggest load board for cars.
